2010 Heron Lake State Park Paddle Fest August 20-22 *Unless otherwise noted, all events will take place in the Ridge Rock area. Ridge Rock is about 5 miles past the Visitor Center. Turn right immediately after crossing the dam. *There is a $5.00 day use fee for park visitors. If you are helping with the Festival you will be given a free ‗volunteer‘ pass at the Festival registration table (at Ridge Rock). *Registration starts at noon on Friday Aug. 20 at Ridge Rock site 151. This is when you can sign-up for clinics. There is no preregistration. *There is a $5.00 suggested Registration donation. There is no charge for clinics unless noted on the Clinic Offerings schedule. *Festival volunteers can camp for free in the Ridge Rock area (please let Siscily know in advance if you need a camp site). *The Friday evening dinner paddle will begin at 6p.m. on Friday. Meet at the Willow Creek boat ramp. We will paddle into ‗the Narrows‘ for dinner. *The closest flush toilets (to the Ridge Rock area) are east across the dam and on the south side of the road. There are vault toilets near the Ridge Rock camp ground loop. *Showers are available at Island View comfort station.

How to Build Wooden Boats

Harmon

Harmon has been building wooden boats for ten years. He will have examples of both stitch and glue and strip boats. He will explain the construction of both types of boats, have information on where to get boat kits and will have examples of what comes in the kit. Both of his boats will be available for you to try out on the water, the only thing he asks is that you please bring them back.

Watercolor on the Water

We will work with primary colors to complete two small paintings, while exploring the properties of watercolor pigment and basic color theory. All materials will be provided, and you get to take them home too! $5 materials charge

First Aid for Paddlers

Includes a checklist of suggested items to include in a first aid kit, and conditions to be prepared for while paddling, as well as homeopathic remedies you should never be without. {Not intended to replace medical advice from your physician or CPR/First Aid training}

Pilates – Paddle From Your Powerhouse 30 minutes

Intro to Windsurfing and Stand-up Paddle Boarding

Learn about the necessary equipment and skills to stand on water! Contrary to popular rumor, windsurfing does not require a great deal of strength or stamina, especially when you learn and apply proper technique. Paddle Boarding is a fairly new activity which is fun and relaxing. Take a peek into both of these water sports through video and demonstrations by a professional instructor.

This ACA (American Canoe Association) course will expose participants to basic paddling and safety skills. Part of this session is on DVD. It will be held in the Heron Lake Visitor Center Great Room Friday evening August 20 at 8 p.m. and continued at the Ridge Rock primitive ramp Sat. morning at 7:30.

Quick Start

Class size limit 5 Quick Start is an ACA three-hour introduction to paddling a kayak. Students are presented with basic information on dressing for safety, potential hazards and simple rescues. A minimal paddle skill set is presented and practiced, allowing students to safely and comfortably maneuver on still water. While designed as a stand-alone, introductory course, QuickStart students often progress to the Introduction to Kayak course to acquire greater paddling skill through significantly more guided, on-water practice time.

Solo Canoeing

Class size limit 10 "Although kayaking is far and away the growth side of paddlesports today, the canoe may often be the better choice of boat, depending upon one's intended use. Learning to paddle a solo canoe is fundamental to the art of paddling. The essence of effective solo canoeing involves learning to use the paddle to simultaneously propel and steer the craft. This clinic will cover the basic strokes involved in paddling a solo canoe, and attendees will have an opportunity to try their hand at it as well. We'll use both solo and tandem canoes, and participants will learn skills that they will be able to develop with continued practice."

Introduction to Kayaking

Class size limit 5 ACA‘s Introduction to Kayaking is a six-hour course focusing on skills needed for any type of kayak including but not limited to sit on tops, recreational, folding and inflatable. Presentations include dressing to paddle safely and potential paddling hazards. Simple rescues are demonstrated by the instructor combined with the paddling skills practiced by students to maneuver safely and comfortably on still water.

Dog Paddling 101
