Forced Choice to First Choice: Feedback and Motivation......... Yun-Ching Lin: Johnson H.S. (GA) Action research is inquiry or research in the context of focused efforts to improve the quality of an organization and its performance. It typically is designed and conducted by practitioners (as individuals or as teams) who analyze the data to improve their own practice. Action research has the potential to generate genuine and sustained improvements in schools. It gives educators new opportunities to reflect on and assess their teaching; to explore and test new ideas, methods, and materials; to assess how effective the new approaches were; to share feedback with fellow team members and other interested in the same research; and to make decisions about which new approaches to include in the team’s curriculum, instruction, and assessment plans.

PLU/CEU CREDIT An Attendance Verification Form will be printed in the program. The participant should list the WORKSHOPS (Thursday only) and/or SESSIONS attended in the space provided on the form as well as the time segment for each. Since local requirements for credit vary, participants should check with their local, state, or district administrator for the exact requirements and filing procedures. It may be helpful to submit the conference program booklet and/or your conference badge along with the Verification form. If your administration/district requires further verification of attendance, the SCOLT Executive Director can email that information to the person designed by the participant.

Founded in 1967, the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina has over 700 members. FLANC represents the professional interest of educators and administrators from the elementary grades through the university level. FLANC strives to provide a beneficial annual fall conference dealing with national and state second language issues as well as practical classroom topics. SCOLT’s appreciation is extended to Peter Floyd, FLANC president, and Debra Martin, FLANC Executive Director, and the FLANC Board for its contributions to the 2010 conference.

North Carolina Chapter AATSP-NC is an organization of Spanish and Portuguese educators and other professionals in North Carolina open to all P-16 educators as well as others interested in Spanish and Portuguese. This chapter is associated with the national (actually international) organization AATSP or American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. President, Charles Moore, has arranged for some special AATSP-NC sponsored sessions.

SAMPLE

The mission of the National Network for Early Language Learning is to provide leadership in support of successful early language learning and teaching. Since its founding in 1987, NNELL continues to be an invaluable resource for educators, parents and policymakers advocating for K-8 programs of excellence in second language education. NNELL believes that all elementary school students should have access to high quality, ongoing and systematic world language instruction. Sandra Schoder, NNELL Representative designated for the SCOLT region, has provided support for Early Language Learning sessions for the 2010 conference.

Conference Workshops and Conference Sessions The Conference Workshops (3hrs.) occur on Thursday for an additional fee. It is recommended that participants sign up in advance for workshops since the workshop may be closed at the on-site registration. General registration covers participation in all sessions and access to the Exhibit Hall. The SCOLT luncheon on Friday and the FLANC luncheon on Saturday are an additional fee. Participants may register for a two-day or a three-day conference as indicated on the registration form. If you have questions, contact Lynne McClendon, SCOLT Executive Director: [email protected]
