Report prepared by Sandra Whitmer, Library Director August 2010

INTRODUCTION

In April 2010, the Warrenville Public Library District mailed a Community Survey questionnaire to more than 6,000 residential and business addresses in the 60555 zip code. Recipients were given the opportunity to complete the survey online or to return the paper survey via an enclosed postage–paid envelope. The deadline for completing the survey was May 1. As an added incentive, the Library offered an additional entry into the National Library Week prize drawing for anyone who completed a survey prior to the conclusion of National Library Week. A total of 800 survey responses were received. The represented a return rate of over 13% and was nearly double the return rate of the 2004 community survey. Because recipients self–selected whether they would return the survey, the results cannot be considered a “scientifically valid” reflection of the attitudes of District residents. Nevertheless, the number of surveys returned is well in excess of the number of samples that would have been needed to create a statistically valid sample at a 98% confidence level.

1

OVERVIEW Cardholders

(Survey Results page 7)

93% of the survey participants indicated that they had a Warrenville Public Library District card. This number is significantly higher than the actual percentage of residents who have a card (approximately 50%). The variance may be caused by any of the following factors: Although multiple cardholders may reside in a single residence, only one person from the household may have completed the survey. Survey participants were self–selected. Library users may have been more likely to complete the survey than non–users. This statistical difference means that the results of this survey are more likely to skew toward the opinions of library users rather than represent the opinions of the entire community. The Library may wish to consider hiring a survey specialist to conduct a random, scientifically valid survey in the future. Such a survey is estimated to cost $20,000–$30,000.

Visits to the Library

(Survey Results page 7)

In total more than 62% of the survey participants indicated that they visited the library at least monthly. Nearly 1/3 visit the library on a weekly basis. It should be noted that the fact that the number of respondents who indicated that they did not have a library card (6.8%) closely correlates to the percentage who reported that they had not visited the library in the last year (6.7%). When asked why they did not visit the library, most indicated that they have a limited need for library services. The 2004 community survey indicated that more than 53% of respondents visited the library at least monthly and 11% indicated that they had not visited the library. The results of the 2010 survey indicate that more people are visiting the library and also indicate that those who visit the library are visiting more often.

Use of Other Libraries

(Survey Results page 8)

Not surprisingly, participants who use other libraries indicated that they use two nearby libraries more than any others: Naperville Public Library and Wheaton Public Library.

2

Role of the Library in the Community

(Survey Results page 9)

When asked to choose the five most important roles from a list of 18 roles defined by the Public Library Association, survey participants indicated that the Library should continue to serve the following roles in the community: Create Young Readers: Promote early literacy for children from birth to age five Satisfy Curiosity: Provide lifelong learning resources and opportunities Succeed in School: Provide resources that support the curriculum for students through grade 12 Stimulate Imagination: Provide current, popular materials and programs Connect to the Online World: Provide high–speed access to the digital world with no unnecessary restrictions or fees for residents. Following closely behind the top five are: Understand How to Find, Evaluate, and Use Information: Provide instruction in searching, locating, evaluating and effectively using information. Get Facts Fast: Help residents get answers to questions on a wide array of topics of personal interest. Enjoy a Community Meeting Place: Maintain a safe and welcoming space to meet and interact with others or to sit quietly and read. The Library Board and Staff should utilize this feedback in evaluating existing staffing, collections, programs & services. These roles should be considered when planning and budgeting for future programs & services.

Marketing

(Survey Results page 10)

Nearly 75% of survey respondents indicated that they get information about library programs and materials from the Library’s Newsletter which is mailed to more than 6,000 addresses in Warrenville. Equal numbers (42%) learn about library information from signs & flyers at the library or from information posted on the library’s website. This information indicates that direct mail continues to be an effective way to reach out to residents of the library district. The website is also an effective marketing tool.

Website

(Survey Results page 11)

Two–thirds of survey respondents indicated that they had accessed the library’s website, www.warrenville.com, from somewhere other than the library. (It is interesting to note that this number 3

has not changed since the 2004 Community Survey.) Of those who had accessed the website, more than 80% indicated that they had used the library’s online catalog to find out if the library owned a specific item and/or to reserve materials. Nearly 63% indicated that they used the website to access information about their accounts (check due dates or renew items). 57% indicated that they visited to look up information about the library (phone number, hours, location). Just over 20% indicated that they had looked up program information or registered for a program. About 15% had used an online database or online service.

Current Satisfaction

(Survey Results page 12)

A series of questions aimed at getting information about the current level of satisfaction with the library demonstrated that the community is highly satisfied with the library’s staff, collection, programs and facility. 99% of respondents indicated that library staff are friendly, helpful and are trusted to keep patron information confidential. 98% indicated that they felt reference staff is knowledgeable. 90% indicated that they can usually find what they need at the library. 89% indicated that adult programs meet their expectations whereas 93% indicated that children’s programs meet their expectations. 83% indicated that the library should offer computer classes. 99% reported that they felt the library is clean and that its furnishings are comfortable. Survey respondents appeared satisfied with the library current hours of operation, parking, signage, and atmosphere. 73% of respondents indicated that they would use a self–checkout machine if installed. The library has seen significant improvements over the prior community survey, especially as it relates to specific comments about satisfaction with library staff.

Expansion/Improvement of Collections, Programs & Services

(Survey Results page 13)

The survey asked respondents to indicate which areas of the library should be expanded or improved upon. (Detailed information, including specific suggestions, is available in the Survey Results section of this report.) In Adult Services, the survey showed that the community is interested in an improved collection of DVDs, Nonfiction Books, Books on CD, Fiction Books and Music CDs. In Youth Services, the survey indicated that the community is interested in an improved collection of DVDs, Young Adult Fiction, Books on CD, Juvenile Fiction, and Music CDs, followed closely by Nonfiction Books. While very few (less than 75) responded to a question about the Spanish collection, there was an indication that the children’s collection of Spanish materials should be expanded.

4

The survey indicated an interest in more programs for adults and seniors. Additional programming for elementary, middle and high school–aged residents was also of interest. (It should be noted that it is likely that this result is skewed due to the fact that the majority of survey respondents were adults.) Again, the Library Board and Staff should utilize this feedback in evaluating existing collections & programs as well as planning and budgeting for the future.

Use of Technology

(Survey Results page 37)

More than 90% of respondents indicated that they utilize the Internet and email. This information should be considered and utilized to encourage patrons to transition away from telephone notification to email notifications. The library could realize significant budgetary savings from such a transition. Nearly 95% indicated that they use DVD players and nearly 90% indicated that they use CD players. A saturation point for DVD and CD technologies has been reached and the library should consider retiring the collection of VHS and cassette tapes to make way for other growing collections. Nearly 2/3 indicated that they use a laptop or netbook. The library may wish to conduct a study of the number of patrons who carry in a laptop or other computing device to utilize the library’s wireless network. At some point in the future, it may be possible to reduce the number of public access computers in favor of patron supplied laptops, netbooks or similar wireless devices. Other technologies that the library may wish to keep in mind include: mp3 players (50% indicated that they use an mp3 player such as an iPod), Blu–ray (13% indicated that they use a Blu-ray player), eReaders (6% indicated that they use a device like the Kindle).

Social Networking

(Survey Results page 38)

The library was interested in finding out which social networks residents are utilizing. The library may use this information to increase marketing efforts via certain social network sites. Of the 550 respondents who answered the social networking question, 75% use Facebook, 60% use YouTube. Other social network tools (LinkedIn, Twitter, MySpace, Flickr) are used by far fewer people.

New Services

(Survey Results page 39)

The final question on the survey asked participants to indicate which services the library should pursue if funding were available. The top response was a drive–up book return, followed closely by more audiovisual materials, a coffee shop or vending lounge, more books, and a used book shop.

5

General Comments & Suggestions

(Survey Results page 41)

The Board and Staff should consider the many additional suggestions that have been sorted into the following categories: Building, Hours, Materials – Print & General, Materials – AV, Services, Programs & Services, Staff, Technology, and General Comments. The verbatim comments are included beginning on page 41. Many of the comments are positive statements about the existing facility and services. Others provide constructive feedback which should be used to improve upon the library’s strengths and overcome certain weaknesses. In addition to many, many positive comments, these are some of the more common suggestions: Building:

Need quiet study areas Consider separate area for children Make use of lower level Do not shelve materials on the bottom shelves

Materials:

Purchase more copies of new releases

Services:

Coffee service Easier access/ Expand collection of eAudiobooks Add eBooks Consider patron use of meeting rooms when not in use; consider no charge for local clubs and organizations Online material request form (for purchase or ILL)

Technology:

Restrict adult computer users to computers in adult area

Don't need so many TV shows don't use Everything Everything is good. Films that are well reviewed but possibly not big box office. fine as is Foreign films have improved in last 24 months Fun films Get rid of entertainment material Good collection Have a way to access just the "new" DVDs online instead of the entire collection Have not used Haven't used DVD collection How about a new releases section or a list of new releases or newly acquired movies to make it easier to find new movies? I do not usually rent DVDs, but I remember needing volume and variety when it came to children's program (TV) DVDs. I've never used any. just more in general More family oriented DVDs displayed in the Adult Section if you have them movies none not much - I'm still working through what you've got on hand! Not sure it’s been a while since I checked out a DVD pretty good collection proportion is fine Psyche series Rarely get DVDs Remove old VHS, clear space, nobody uses VHS anymore. Replace movies on tape with DVDs. This library has too big of a collection of TV shows and less of motion picture DVDs. You need a new filing system - alphabetical is useless. This section really needs changing.
