Taking a Break The Loggers will take a brief holiday this week as they break for Spring Break. Waiting for them on the other side will be Whitworth and Whitman, who Puget Sound will get to face at home.

Looking To The Future While the Loggers are struggling a bit in 2009, their roster shows promise for the seasons to come. Of the seven freshman on the roster, four are regular starters in singles play and two others have seen action on the court. Leading the way are Madison Holtz and Jessica Gauger, who have individual record of 3-5 and 2-7 respectively.

WOMEN’S TENNIS DROPS SEASON OPENER TACOMA, Wash. - With seven freshman on the roster, the Puget Sound Loggers opened the 2009 season a bit timid, falling to the Pacific Boxers, 7-2, in a Northwest Conference women’s tennis match on Friday afternoon at the UPS Tennis Pavilion in Tacoma, Wash. Pacific took the early lead by sweeping all three doubles matches. The Loggers nearly got one in the third spot, but the team of Devin Fields (San Francisco, Calif./Lick-Wilmerding) and Ashley Dombrow (Lake Forest, Ill./The Ethel Walker School) fell to Stephanie Velligas and Dawn Greene, 9-7. In singles play, the Loggers collected victories at the number three and four spots. In the third position, freshman Madison Holtz (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) defeated Dayna Wong, 6-1, 6-3. ‘CATS PREY ON LOGGERS, 9-0 TACOMA,Wash. - The young Puget Sound women’s tennis team saw what the top of the Northwest Conference looked like on Saturday as they fell to the seven-time defending NWC champion Linfield Wildcats, 9-0, in a NWC match on Saturday at the UPS Tennis Pavilion in Tacoma, Wash. The Wildcats, who won their 100th consecutive Northwest Conference match, should their strength in doubles play, sweeping all three positions to take an early advantage leading into singles play. YOUNG LOGGERS FALL IN ROAD OPENER SALEM, Ore. - The Puget Sound Logger women’s tennis team played well on Friday afternoon but not well enough, falling to the host Willamette Bearcats, 8-1, in a Northwest Conference women’s tennis match at the Courthouse Tennis Club in Salem, Ore. In doubles play, the Loggers played the ‘Cats tight, falling in the number one and two positions, 8-5, and in the third position, 8-3. Things would remain close between the Loggers and Bearcats in singles play. The Loggers’ lone victory of the afternoon would come in the number two singles match as Alissa Wolf (Durango, Colo.) held off Kristen Dedijer-Small, 6-3, 6-1. The Loggers nearly got another win by freshman Madison Holtz (Honolulu, Hawaii/ Punahou) in the third spot as Holtz fell to Fabi Dieguez, 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-4). The Loggers also had a close match in the number six singles spot as Jessica Gauger (Portland, Ore./Claremont-M-S) fell to Jamie Slonake, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3, 1-0 (10-3). LOGGER WOMEN KNOCK OFF LUTES, 5-4 TACOMA, Wash. - Led by a sweep in doubles play, the Puget Sound Loggers collected their first win of the 2009 season, defeating cross-town rival Pacific Lutheran, 5-4, in a Northwest Conference women’s tennis match on Sunday afternoon at the UPS Tennis Pavilion in Tacoma, Wash. The Loggers took the big lead right off the bat when they collected three big wins in doubles play. The number one team of Sam Taylor (Hood River, Ore./Oregon Episcopal) and Madison Holtz (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) snuck past Ashley Brooks and Ashley Coats, 9-7. At the second spot, Ashley Dombrow (Lake Forest, Ill./The Ethel Walker School) teamed with Devin Fields (San Francisco, Calif./Lick Wilmerding) to defeat Kristi Bruner and Ali Burnside, 8-5. WOMEN’S TENNIS DROPS PAIR AT WHIT’S SPOKANE/WALLA WALLA, Wash. - Arguably the toughest road trip in the Northwest Conference, the young Puget Sound Loggers dropped a pair of Northwest Conference women’s tennis matches at both Whitworth and Whitman. The Loggers fell to Whitworth, 9-0, on Friday afternoon before dropping a match at Whitman, 9-0, in Walla Walla. WOMEN’S TENNIS FALL AT HOME TO GEORGE FOX/L&C TACOMA, Wash. - Showing moments of promise on both days, the Puget Sound Loggers dropped two Northwest Conference women’s tennis matches over the weekend, falling to George Fox and Lewis & Clark by identical 7-2 scores. On Friday night, the Loggers took the lead following doubles play after posting wins at the numbers one and two doubles spots. Sam Taylor (Hood River, Ore./Oregon Episcopal) and Madison Holtz (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou) teamed up at the top spot to defeat Mollee Robinson and Corinne Borrelli, 8-6. At the second spot, Alissa Wolf (Durango, Colo.) and Ada Yu (Salem, Ore./McKay) defeated Courtney Banks and Betsy Ann Penman, 8-4. The Bruins responded with a singles sweep to collect the victory. On Saturday, the Loggers dropped the three doubles matches to fall behind but they climbed back in it during singles play as both Holtz and Ashley Dombrow (Lake Forest, Ill/The Ethel Walker School) were able to collect victories for Puget Sound. WOMEN’S TENNIS DROPS PAIR ON ROAD AT PACIFIC/LINFIELD BEAVERTON/McMINNVILLE, Ore. - Freshman Jessica Gauger (Portland, Ore./Claremont-M-S) won both of her singles matches over the weekend but the Puget Sound Loggers dropped a pair of Northwest Conference matches, falling 6-3 to Pacific and 8-1 to Linfield. Against Pacific, the Loggers took the number three doubles match behind the strong play of freshmen Ada Yu (Salem, Ore./ McKay) and Nina Ho (Honolulu, Hawaii/Kaiser). In singles play, both Yu and Gauger played to straight set victories but the Boxers won the remainder of the maches to collect the 6-3 victory. Against Linfield, the Loggers nearly got a win at the number three doubles spot before falling 9-8. In singles play, the Wildcats clinched the match by taking five of six singles matches.
