Resources just around the corner The mission of the Régie régionale de la santé et des services sociaux is to manage all of the health and social services available to you in Montreal. For the fifth year in a row, the Régie régionale has published a reference guide called “Montreal Health Care” designed to facilitate your access to these services. This guide links you to the many resources in your neighbourhood: physical and mental health care, in-home support services, assistance for seniors… You’ll find it all and more in the 2002-2003 edition of the guide. CLSC de Rosemont:

always close to you CLSC de Rosemont is your neighbourhood health and social services centre. Hours of operation:

Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and holidays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. CLSC de Rosemont is open 7 days a week, 365 days a year. We provide preventive services, testing, as well as medical, nursing, and psycho-social services (with or without an appointment) to all area residents. The CLSC also offers specialized programs for people in difficulty, regardless of age. We work with daycares and schools from the elementary to the CÉGEP level, and help people in their own homes by providing health and home care services. CLSC de Rosemont cooperates closely with area community organizations and other local partners.

In-home support services Your local CLSC makes it a priority to provide in-home support services to people with temporary or permanent disabilities, more specifically the aged, the handicapped, people who need palliative care, people with AIDS, people requiring post-hospitalization care or suffering from a chronic obstructive lung disease, etc.

These services include: • Nursing and medical care • Psycho-social counselling • Rehabilitation • Family support • Personal assistance • Domestic help Contact your CLSC to find out how you can benefit from these services in your home.

Blood tests without appointment Many tests, including blood tests, can be taken without an appointment. Just go to CLSC de Rosemont, and your results will be forwarded free of charge to your doctor’s office.

Monday to Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. If you require a more specialized type of test or service, your doctor may refer you to a specific hospital. In that case, always confirm opening hours before you go.

If you are able to, go to the nearest hospital offering 24-hour emergency care. To consult a physician without an appointment, you can go to CLSC de Rosemont or go to your local walk-in clinic, but call ahead to check opening hours.

Services for children, parents and the whole family Parents with newborns or young children can turn to their CLSC for information and advice about pregnancy, infant care, nutrition, dental hygiene, general health, vaccination, education, child behaviour and family life. Expecting parents can also benefit from pre-natal classes. In addition, health, social and family support services are offered after childbirth. Are you the parent of a child, teenager or young adult? The CLSC can help with information and advice on your role as a parent, and can refer you to additional resources when necessary.

Mental health If either you or a loved one is experiencing personal problems or feel the need for professional help, don’t hesitate to speak to your doctor about it or contact your CLSC, where someone will guide you to the appropriate resources. If you require psychiatric care, here is the designated facility in your area:

We’re here for young people Whether at the CLSC or in school, a team of professionals is available to help young people deal with a range of issues, including general health, sexuality (contraception, STDs, etc.), pregnancy, substance abuse, personal or family problems, and other concerns. In accordance with the rights granted under the Civil Code of Quebec, anyone who is 14 or older can obtain health services from a CLSC or a medical clinic in the strictest of confidence.

All young people can receive free vaccinations at their school or CLSC. These vaccines include: • Hepatitis B – for people aged 10 to 18 (as well as all 4th graders) • Diphtheria/tetanus (booster) – for people aged 14 to 16 Certain other vaccines are also available free of charge for young people at risk, such as street youth, drug users, homosexual and bisexual youth, and chronic hepatitis B and C carriers. Contact your CLSC for more information.

Special services for seniors In addition to services available to the general population, seniors who are no longer fully self-sufficient may also benefit from a variety of services tailored specifically to their needs. For example, your CLSC can assign someone to provide you with ongoing support and guide you through the health care system. This person will make sure you receive appropriate services in a safe environment, either in your own home, at the CLSC or with whichever resource is best suited to your needs.

Domestic help for seniors Need a hand with your regular housekeeping duties or even that big cleanup? Reduced-rate housekeeping services are available to people aged 65 or more, based on family income and size, through the Government of Quebec Financial Assistance Program. People under 65 who require domestic help after surgery or as a result of illness or other incapacity need a referral from their CLSC to qualify for the reduced rate. This program offers an ideal communitybased solution: seniors have access to affordable, quality domestic help while supporting a local business. Information :

Your satisfaction is our main concern The health and social services network is there to ensure that you receive the services you need. • If you’re dissatisfied with the quality of service in a health care institution, contact the Local Quality Commissioner. You can get the address and phone number from the institution in question or from our Web site. • If you’re dissatisfied with the quality of service offered by a community agency or the Régie régionale, contact the Regional Quality Commissioner at 286-5615. • If you are still not satisfied with the response from the Local or Regional Quality Commissioner, you can contact the Health and Social Services Ombudsman at 873-3205. The Régie régionale can also inform you about your rights with regard to health and social services, and about resources available in Montreal and how to access them. Who should get this free vaccine? People 60 years of age or over and people with health problems requiring regular medical follow-up.

Why should I be vaccinated? Because the flu (or influenza) is a very contagious viral infection. Because the flu can cause serious complications that can be fatal for people who are more vulnerable. Because the annual flu shot is the best way to protect yourself against this infection.

When should I be vaccinated? You can be vaccinated as of November 1. The flu is more frequent in wintertime. To protect yourself effectively against the flu, make an appointment with your family doctor or your CLSC to receive your free shot as soon as possible. The ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux considers that vaccination is the best means of protection against the flu.
