October 1, 2016 Dear Parents, September was a great month at C2E. Classes are in full swing and it is exciting to get into the classrooms and see all that the students are learning. Thank you to all of you for supporting our Mammoth March both financially and in person. It was wonderful to have so many parents helping and cheering the students on. A special thanks to Mike Temple and Chandra Francis for chairing this event. I believe, once all of the pledges are collected, that we will reach our fundraising target of $25, 000 for the school. This money will allow us to continue to increase our technology programs for the students. Our dress down days for Louisiana raised over $1800.00 for Save the Children Louisiana. Our leadership team of 8th graders took charge of this fundraiser and with everyone’s support made it a big success. I am grateful that our students are learning to care for others outside our school. I have been given notice by the Parker Police department regarding traffic at arrival time each day. There is a sign on Carlson Drive near our driveway that states No Parking. That sign will be changing to read No Stopping and No Parking. If you wish to drop your student off at arrival time along Carlson Drive, it will need to be to the east of the no stopping or parking area. Once the sign is changed, Parker Police will begin ticketing if you stop to let a student out in the designated no stopping area. Also, please remember that parking in the apartment complexes is not allowed. You run the risk of being towed if you park there. Lastly, Kiddie Academy has been gracious enough to allow us to park in their lot when their business is not open. Please do not park there during regular hours. We appreciate you helping us to be good neighbors. We are having some issues with students not having headphones when they need them for class. As a school that works extensively with technology, headphones are essential. As a convenience to you we are purchasing extra ear buds which will be available for $2.00 a pair. When your student tells you they need new headphones, please either send in a pair or send them to the office with $2.00 to purchase them. We hope this ensures that your student is not missing any educational opportunities that require headphones.

It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Fall Festival. A special thanks to Christina Zwerenz and Jennifer Moe for chairing this annual event! They really outdid themselves this year. This year both the school and PVA have set a goal of building a stronger school community and Fall Festival was proof that we are on our way. These types of events are what children remember fondly. Thank you to everyone who worked with Christina and Jennifer to make this event such a great one and to all of our families for supporting it. It is hard to believe that 1st quarter is almost over and that fall break is just around the corner. Please remember that Parent/Teachers conferences are being held on Friday, October 21 st. Students will be dismissed at noon on that day and conferences will be held from 1:15 until 6:00 p.m.

Mobile Art Gallery: November 1-15 Community Night: November 9 6-8 pm This year the middle school received a grant from the Alliance Project. This grant funds cultural programs for our school. One of those program is the Cherry Arts Mobile Art Gallery. It will be house at C2E November 115. A group of middle school student will learn to handle, hang, and talk about the art brought to our school. Those students will act as docents and give tours to other students. The community night is an event that opens the art gallery to the public.

From the Art Room

Students are working or various projects as we head into October. Kinder is working on skills used in creating artwork. How to use scissors, glue sticks, and liquid glue. We also have read the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Our first project is based on the book. Our project for October will be based on The Rainbow Fish. 1st Grade started the year with a project that I refer to as Sunset Silhouettes. We talk about sunsets and how the sunlight makes object look as it sets in the evening. Our 2nd project is based on American Artist Norman Rockwell. We start the project by reading Rockwell: A Boy and His Dog. The story is told from the perspective on one of the child models that Rockwell used in multiple painting for The Saturday Evening Post. 2nd Grade’s first project of the year was based on Southwestern Artist Ted DeGrazia. De Grazia painted many of the children from the reservation near his home. We look at the simple shapes that he used to create those children. After that project, we explore the science behind why the leaves change colors. Our next project is based on the beauty that we see every Fall. 3rd Grade started the year looking at Georgia O’Keeffe and how she shows space in her landscape paintings. They are learning how to show foreground, middleground, and background in their artwork. 4th Grade is creating a still life painting. In this projects students are learning that an object’s placement on the page and that overlapping of objects show space or depth. 5th Grade looked at Austrian artist Gustav Klimt’s artwork Farmhouse With Birch Tree’s. Students studied how Klimt shows depth in his painting by the placement of trees in the painting and how his trees become less clean as they recede in space. Middle School’s first assignment is to draw what they see in a still life. There are some basic things that they are required to show in their artwork. Their work needs to include overlapping; proper proportion; and light, highlight, shadow, and cast shadow. The next project is a cross curricular project. They are making large scale watercolor paintings of cells. 7th and 8th grades just finished a unit on cells in science. Art Club has been working on a variety of projects. They have created 3D cardboard sculptures, drawing that they photographed with an object, and clay.

UPCOMING EVENTS: Box Tops Contest: October 1st through 31st Spirit Night: Thursday, October 6th Spirit Wear Days: Thursday, October 6th, and Friday, November 4th Staff Luncheon: Friday, October 21st Mother-Son ‘Spy Camp’ Event: Friday, November 4th Veteran’s Day Event: Friday, November 11th

A NOTE FROM YOUR PVA BOARD TEAM: Dear Mammoth Families, Our PVA family never fails to amaze us. Overseeing a group this large with this many events can be daunting, but not with this group. We are less than 10 weeks into the school year and our school spirit is HIGH! We have already had several successful Fundraisers and Heart-Raiser events. Our Heart-Raiser events are those that look to bring our school community together, not necessarily to raise money. The PVA would like to say a special thank you to Michael Temple and Chandra Francis for all the hard work on our Mammoth March event. The planning started back in the summer and both of them have worked so hard to make this an extraordinary event. Our Fall Festival Co-Chairs, Christina Zwerenz and Jennifer Moe, raised the bar for this Heart-Raiser event, with the help of countless parent and student volunteers. This last weekend was a wonderful community event for our school. Thank you all for stepping up and working so tirelessly for our school!

The PVA is a vital part of Challenge to Excellence School. We work together to focus on enhancing the education o tional resources to enrich their learning experience, and grow our Mammoth community. To accomplish our goals we have planned many events throughout the school year. Please take time to keep informed by reading the monthly newsletter and following us on Facebook and Twitter. Check out our new and improved website (https://sites.google.com/a/c2e.org/c2epva/) and take the next step by getting involved.

This month we will have another Spirit Night on Thursday, October 6th. We encourage our Mammoth families to join us at Chick-Fil-A as we come together for a multipurpose event. This Spirit Night is considered a Fundraiser but will serve 3 purposes: 1) Fundraiser for our school; 2) Heart-Raiser for our families to enjoy a meal together; and 3) Proceeds from this night will assist C2E Middle School students as they serve a wonderful breakfast for our local veterans for a Veterans’ Day event in November. Hope to see you at Chick-Fil-A! From your 2016-2017 PVA Board Annette, Brenda, Karen, and Lourdes

TEACHER/STAFF APPRECIATION LUNCHEON: Friday, October 21st 3rd Annual Bronco Tailgate Party! Football Season is here! It’s time to let out a great big cheer for our Broncos and lead them on to another winning season. We truly believe that Mrs. Bergman’s Bronco banner and our tailgate party for our teachers and staff brought on a Super Bowl win last year! So please help out with our 3rd Annual Bronco Tailgate Party for our Staff Appreciation Luncheon. Just as a reminder, this is a half day at school due to Parent/Teacher Conferences that afternoon. This year we will be serving appetizers, finger foods, BBQ, and desserts! We will, of course, decorate in BLUE and ORANGE! Please have your items to the school by 11:30 a.m. We do have a few staff members with vegetarian, gluten free, and sugar-free requirements. Please have all items to the school no later than 11:30 a.m. on Friday, October 21st. All items need to be heated and ready to serve. Label all dishes and if you bring a Crock Pot, please use a liner. We will be giving away a Broncos Basket at this luncheon. Last year we did the Bronco Banner that Mrs. Bergman won. She was very gracious to share her win with the entire school. With Coach Curtis’ help, she hung her Banner in the Art room for everyone to enjoy. If anyone would like to donate items to this year’s Bronco basket, please let me know. We would love to fill it with cups, keychains, hats, scarfs, gloves, pens, shirts, etc. Truly anything that says Broncos. You’ll find Broncos paraphernalia all over the stores right now. Items for the basket need to be turned in by Wednesday, October 19th. Click here to sign up: http://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0944adae2caa8-bronco If you have any questions, please contact Annette Kullmer: [email protected] or (720) 323-0513.
