PRESIDENT’S REPORT – Leon Jacobs It’s not possible to write a report on season 2011/12 without first taking a look back at where we came from before the season began. Season 2010/11 began with such tremendous excitement, predominantly on the back of the recruitment of our first ever international, Jewish player Bensiyon Songavkar, but really ended with his forced early departure due to a fantastic career opportunity back in India, a season ruined by bad weather, a string of poor performances that saw our first eleven relegated, and a constant evaporation of quality player numbers putting pressure on team selection each week. In contrary to those on field disappointments, work had begun on one of the club’s biggest ever off field projects – the construction of new practice facilities that were at least the equal if not superior to the rest of the competition, the renovation of the pavilion through the ongoing generosity of the Mandie family, and the recruitment of a Training Coordinator/Manager with district grade experience that would soon be heralded as one of the most significant appointments the club has made in recent times. Many conversations were held with my fellow committeemen, senior players and the younger generation on the subject of how to regain traction on-field. Thankfully our club, led by first eleven captain Dave Majtlis and other senior players and leaders, tackled preseason with enthusiasm and purpose. Dave also worked hard on recruiting and enticing some key players back to the club to improve the depth of the first eleven which then had a flow on effect to lower elevens. It was great to see guys like Allan Goldstein and Dean Wiener back at the club after such long absences and they were an absolute credit to have. Unfortunately none of our four senior teams participated in finals this season but we are confident, knowing where the club has come from and the rebuilding we undertook this year, that finals appearances are just around the corner. One of the most significant appointments the club made this season was the appointment of Paul Jubber. Paul’s experience managing young sportsmen was evident from the first time we met him during a lunch break from his responsibilities at Melbourne Grammar. As well as his senior school coaching experience Paul brought with him a 10+ year career in district cricket as a player and assistant coach with

Melbourne as well as all the coaching accreditations we could hope for. We knew we needed someone special to fill a coaching void but didn’t anticipate we would get someone with so much passion, energy, enthusiasm and genuine care for our club and our players – we are very fortunate to have Paul as part of our club and we are excited to announce that he will continue in his role next season as well as be involved with the Maccabiah Games next year as he was recently appointed as the Junior team coach. Off field we do have the best training facilities and a pavilion that ranks with the best in the competition. We do however need to respect and look after our facilities so we can remain proud of them for the foreseeable future. I am proud of the capital works fund we have created in conjunction with the football club that will ensure that the pavilion is maintained impeccably and will remain an honour to the Mandie name that proudly adorns it. It is just the first of a few initiatives done in conjunction with the football club and I’m proud of the progress we have made with our relations there. On field I’d like to congratulate and thank our tremendously hard working captains Dave Majtlis, Simon Morawetz, Jeremy Seigel and Ian Jones on the leadership they provide the rest of the playing group every week. We made no changes to our captains from last season because, as a committee, after the difficulties of last season, we felt these leaders of our club deserved another crack at the roles and we were keen to see some stability with our leadership. None of them let us down and we’re particularly excited about the players that have developed under their tutelage and the prospects for the future. We are also working extremely hard to try and encourage more senior, experienced players to return to the club as we have identified that many of our young players really need more on field guidance and direction to fast track them to future success. To our leadership group, congratulations to you for being recognised by your peers as leaders. We will be amending the structure of the leadership group’s activities next season so you can expect more from us and we will expect more from you. Whilst mentioning our on field leaders I must also mention Paul Fink. Finky answered the call this season to take on the critical Chairman of Selectors role. He wanted to be involved with the club and although he can no longer play due to injury, we are just so lucky to have him around. I know he would have wanted to implement more of his selection policies and criteria but the ongoing concern of player numbers still hovered over us this season. If we continue to grow our numbers at games and at training we

will soon be able to make the short term tough decisions to set the club culture up for the long term benefit of all. Paul, a huge thank you from me and all of the club members for your commitment to our club, your work on the website which is the best in the association by far, everything else you help me and everyone else with, and your involvement as Team Manager next year for Maccabiah. I sincerely hope you continue as Chairman of Selectors and congratulate you on a well deserved Life Membership anointment. Off the field there is so much more going on and so much more to do. The Junior club continues to thrive and I congratulate Mark Shapiro on his tireless efforts over many years and welcome Howard Machlin as the new president. During the season break we hope to open dialogue with both clubs that will see them working more closely together and bridging the perceived gap players may encounter between junior and senior cricket. There are many initiatives both clubs could do better in unison and we want to explore those options. Maccabiah is coming up in 2013 too and our club will obviously look to get behind our players that are selected and assist them with fundraising and any other support we can offer. We also want to evaluate where and when our players play in future seasons and in the meantime thank the VTCA and MCA for their support of our club. Currently the Silver Arc fourth eleven play on Sundays to allow the more observant of our members to play and be an integral part of our club. But we must be open to the option of perhaps some of our other lower elevens playing on Sundays too and give players in these teams the opportunity to be promoted to higher elevens and higher grades if the competitions and associations can facilitate it. There is no reason why a quality Jewish cricketer shouldn’t be able to force his way into higher teams just because for years we have played only on Saturdays. The associations are far more flexible than they ever were nowadays and we must look at all our options to create an environment and opportunities for our club to be as inclusive of all of our members as possible. Thanks also to Maccabi Victoria for their continued support. We have been successful a few times with grants from their various programs and we appreciate the role they play in Jewish sport.

A big thanks to Dave Robinson, our curator, who continuously toils on our centre wickets to produce the best he can for us. We were fortunate when we found Dave and he continues to be an invaluable resource for us. A continued source of satisfaction for us as a club, mainly due to the hard work of Ben Spicer, is the fantastic support we receive from our sponsors. Starting with the team at TBM Woodards, James Richardson, Alex Rouditser and his team at Silver Arc, the new partnership with Bendigo Bank, our loyal family at Harris Civil as well as Max Schachter, Pipe Connex, Valco, Progress Shipping and Scott Winton Insurance who have given us the resources to continue to have a Kosher club. Jeff Nadelman’s contribution has been amazing since returning to the club and his support of the club through MOR Cosmetics sponsorship is greatly appreciated. Without the support of all of them we would not be in the financially secure position we are today and I thank them all and encourage our members to patronize their services if given the opportunity. Financially we are a far cry from when I last was President of the Club 20 years ago! The Past Players Association continues to be a source of great pride for me. For our former players to be able to come down to the club and mingle with the current players whether it’s at the golf course in December or the Family Day in February or any of the premiership reunions we hold when they come up is a great initiative. This season our first premiership success of 1961/62 was celebrated at our presentation night and it was fantastic to see some of those guys there. Congratulations to Dave, Allan and Jeremy for having that vision so many years ago and everyone else who has worked with the group since to keep it flourishing. It is a fantastic group and thanks to all who joined again last season. Another initiative started on our website this season was the tracking of other Jewish cricketers playing outside of our club. To those playing higher honours, congratulations on your performances this season – the club wishes you every continued success and always leaves the door open for you to return when you’re ready. It was great to see a few of you represent the Colts at our Past Players Day. To those playing similar grades, we invite you to come and play with us….our pond for fishing for recruits is very small so to see you flourish with rival clubs is a source of frustration to us. If there’s a reason why you have chosen not to play with Maccabi Ajax come and tell us so that we can take your feedback on board and make changes if possible.

And finally to Mikey Klinger, our most decorated “past player” still playing, congratulations for all you have achieved in recent seasons with South Australia – we are so proud of you! We wish you well in England, congratulate you on the recent birth of your son, and hope you continue to build on your fantastic first class career for many years to come. We thank you too for your generosity with cricket gear that continues to find its way back to Melbourne and our club. The hard working committee deserve recognition too. Jeff Israel balanced a new career and still played a major role with the operational side of the club ensuring the facilities were up to scratch, BBQs every second week took place, the kiosk was stocked and players had everything they needed on match days. Joel Rembach took on the Treasurer’s role and did everything asked of him. Brad Abrahams deserves special recognition as he has now been club secretary for 4 seasons which is a fantastic commitment by a young person. His efforts with our email communication this season were outstanding and he continues to demonstrate a maturity and wise head well beyond his years when important matters are discussed at committee level. He is a responsible and impressive individual. Yossi Herbst has been a fantastic find for the committee. His enthusiasm for cricket, his willingness to take on any task, and his support and work with our Kosher sponsors has been appreciated. Yossi was recognised by many of his peers this season for both his on field improvement as a player and his off field work and I congratulate him for it. Thanks too to Simon Fisher for his ongoing work as a conduit between the senior and junior players and for everything else he does off the field and Darren Bloch who also consistently volunteered to do many tasks, we look forward to him playing again next season. To Marc Felman, thank you for your support of me and my role. I know your extended career probably robbed you of some time you would have liked to commit to the club. To Ben Spicer, thanks as mentioned previously for your hard work with our valued sponsors and for your support of all the major functions the club undertook during the season – you could always be relied upon and your informed opinion at committee level was appreciated. And lastly, to our multiple Kurt Defris award winner Joel Beebe, the club continues to be indebted to you for the work you do behind the scenes. As I mentioned at their opening, the practice nets project would never have eventuated without your hard work and efforts. But you didn’t stop there, you continued to be my right hand man and confidante as well as assisting the treasurer with his duties. Joel, you’re a gem and the club is fortunate to have you.
Annual Report 2011/12

So we look forward to next season…..as I’ve already said, we will continue to explore all options to make this club a more attractive place for Jewish youth and men to come and ply their trade. We will continue to seek the best possible support and facilities for our players. From grounds, to curators, from equipment to coaches, that is our role. To those of you thinking about getting involved, do so – it is so rewarding…and we’re tracking towards on field success in the near future so get on board now! Thanks to all of you who made my first season as President so rewarding and for all of your support and encouragement. Thanks to my wife Nicole for her support and understanding and to my boys, Brett and Dean, who no doubt will belt out the tune of ‘Hearts to Hearts’ sometime soon, for their enthusiasm coming with me to watch many games this season. Let’s continue to work towards more growth and success in seasons to come. Leon Jacobs President

COACHING REPORT – Paul Jubber
Thank you to one and all for your extremely warm welcome into this fantastic club.
In reflection it was a year of transition, training one night a week was an adventurous decision made by Leon and his board. The idea of one training session a week was to concentrate numbers at training and allow for the entire club to come together. It certainly allowed the club to gather momentum in the first six weeks of the season, which in turn built excitement and motivated our players. Our training intensity was solid at times, and slowly improved throughout the course of the year. A big thank you must go to 'Fish' for all the fantastic support he provided throughout the season. His organisation of the batting groups and general assistance was first rate and we are extremely lucky to have people of his calibre at the club. The new nets this year were certainly a novelty to begin with, they are a wonderful resource for the club and we are fortunate to have them. The bowling machine certainly added a new dimension at training and many players took up the opportunity to improve their skills. In many ways this year was a year of consolidation and a year that hopefully provided a little taste of the success that hopefully the club will enjoy in the future. It was fantastic to see so many of the players over the course of the season asking questions, challenging one another and generally improving their skills and cricket knowledge. There is a lot to be excited about with the young talent coming through the ranks.

A big thank you to the Committee and their fantastic support, to the Captains and Leadership Group for their tireless efforts and of course the players. Next season certainly sees the club moving into a new phase. A plan is currently being developed for long-term success. In the immediate future, we will be seeking to engage the services of some ex-players to add some experience and depth to our club. There are some exciting times ahead, let's hope you are all on-board, committed and ready to tackle next year with energy and vigour. Paul Jubber Coach

1st XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – David Majtlis 1st XI Captains Report The 2011/12 Season was a very disappointing one for the 1st XI. After starting the season with a realistic goal of being a genuine premiership contender, not making the finals was not acceptable. There were a number of factors which contributed to our performance. 1. 2. 3. 4.
Injuries and absence of key players General failure of the batsman to score runs. Our fielding Weather prohibiting play in key games
I do not wish to focus on the negatives of the year but wish to outline a few of the positives to come from the year. Overall our bowling was consistent and effective. Led by Allan Goldstein (who deservedly won the averages) the bowlers put us in a position to win most of our games. The big plus on the bowling side was that we were able to develop numerous bowlers who can lead the club in the future. Adam Lubitz (17 wickets at 10 including a hat-trick), David Fayman (13 wickets at 14), Jonathan Zimmet, Simon Fisher and Ben Miller all showed at times, that they were capable of playing at this level. All of these guys are young and have heaps of room for development. If just two of them can really kick on and be the club's next Litinsky and Onas or Aubor and Gelbart the club will be well served. When it really counted none of the batsman put their hands up and it was a shame that the batting let the team down again. Solid contributors with the bat this year were Wiener and Lipsitz.
Annual Report 2011/12

The batsmen can look forward to next year and they should all be determined to score plenty of runs and hopefully the following players can rise to the challenge and prove that they are good enough to play at this level: x x x x
Brandon Friedman Mark Shnider Mark Soffer Anders Simon
We also look forward to the return of Julien Wiener and the development of our youngsters (Aaron Fetter, Matt Gamsu etc) I must thank Simon Fisher, my right and sometimes left hand man for his efforts and assistance this year. We were able to develop a terrific working relationship which I hope will continue long into the future. I know we are both committed to this club for many more years. All said, there is a lot of room for improvement. With a greater commitment, a bit of luck and a lot of hard work I'm sure that the 1st XI can again be winning games consistently and challenging for the premiership.

2nd XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Simon Morawetz The Second XI had a bittersweet year, a bit light on onfield success but with many positives to come away with nonetheless. We finished ninth on the ladder with 50.14 points, up on last year’s 41.78. It was a difficult season in terms of player management and very rarely did the Seconds’ line-up resemble the team that played the previous match. Few players played more than five matches in the twos. Of those players, though, there was quite a bit of talent on display. Aaron Fetter was our leading run-scorer, with 134 at 26.8, and JJ Zimmet (18 wickets at 7.61) led the way with the ball. Due to their success, neither spent too much time in the side as they were deservedly promoted to the top tier. One of the biggest positives was the input of some of the youngest players at the club. I was impressed by Under 15 prospect Adam Kahlberg, who twice opened the bowling for the Seconds and looked right at home. I have no doubt that Adam will be a star bowler for the club for many years. Another youngster who shows great promise is Daniel Sneider. Dan has a great batting technique, and is a sharp fielder, but it was his bowling that improved dramatically this year. His consistency in line and length makes him very difficult to play, and he quickly became my designated partnership breaker. Finally, I would like to pay tribute to the defining moment of the Second XI’s season. Having lost by 74 runs on first innings at East Malvern, the Seconds took to the field for the second innings with just 29 overs remaining on the second day. A whirlwind spell of 5/2 from Zimmet turned the game on its head as the home side were dismissed for just 16, leaving 19 overs for the 2s to score 91 runs and pinch a most improbable outright win. And we got them. Jeff Nadelman and Gid Gelbart proceeded to smash the runs so convincingly that we won the game with four overs to spare. It was a stirring win and one that those who played in it will remember for many years.

3rd XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Jeremy Seigel Firstly I would like to thank the committee for once again giving me the opportunity to captain the 3rd XI for a second season in a row. It is a position that I am very proud to hold and I feel very honoured. Once again, there were many challenges associated with the role but these challenges were made easier to deal with having captained the season before. For the first time in the 3rd XI history, the team moved from the VTCA to the MCA. This move in my opinion was really good for the club as we now play with covers and umpires. This results in more cricket being played and making my job a little easier! Although the team had little success during the season, the main focus I had from the start of the season was improvement. I believe the 3rd XI made significant steps in improving as a team as this was evident going from bottom of the ladder without a win last season to winning 2 games and finishing one position higher on the ladder. With such a young team, I believe there is still plenty of improvement to be made and the club should be excited by some of the juniors coming through the ranks. The highlight of the season was by far the win against South Yarra. What was so memorable about this match was the fact it was my first win as captain and it also broke a 15 game losing streak for the 3rd XI. What was even more remarkable was that we were only 2 wickets away from an outright victory! To the Chairman of Selectors - Paul Fink, I would like to thank you for your all your hard work and help each week in putting a team together. In what I think is the hardest job to do at the club, you did a fantastic job showing a high level of professionalism. Thank you to the other 3 captains too, your help and advice throughout the season was greatly appreciated. To the President of the club – Leon Jacobs, thank you so much for your tireless work off and on the field this season. I always knew I could rely on your support even when we were short on numbers as you still managed to put on the whites and help out the team. And on the field, you were also able to provide a strong level of leadership and experience which no doubt has helped the development of the juniors who have played with you.

Page 24
To the veterans in Barry Kave and Laurie Schneider, well what can I say? It is quite unbelievable to see you still on the cricket field. Week in and week out you continue to amaze me that you can still influence the results of games. Thank you both for your continued support, I have thoroughly enjoyed playing a long side you. I would also like to draw attention to the following juniors: Sam Brygel, Farrell Plavin, Ross Sandler, Adam Klein, Ben Machlin, Aaron Fetter, Daniel Sneider, Brent Shapiro, Adam Kahlberg and Steven Lustig. You guys are the future of the club. Stick together boys. I strongly believe success is not far away and the more cricket you play together, the better it will be. It won’t be long till your experiencing finals cricket in higher elevens. Finally, a massive thanks to Paul Jubber, without you training wouldn’t be as enjoyable. The club is extremely privileged to have someone like you and all the players are so lucky to draw on your experience and knowledge of the game. Honorable mentions: -
I know he wouldn't talk it up himself but Leon Jacobs' 107 v Burnley was a fine display of grit that lasted in excess of 80 overs and deserves to be talked up. I can't remember many boundaries in his innings, any flair or any stroke that involved any risk. It is exactly what a side that struggled with the bat needed to see from an elder statesman. What we saw was a senior cricketer come back and show that there was no place he'd rather be than out in the middle. We have a number of youngsters who can learn a thing or two about application from this innings. Leon refused to have his concentration broken, applying all his ability as he continually picked the opposition attack off to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Along with Nathan's 9 wicket haul, it was the only time we had an individual take a game by the scruff of the neck all season. Congratulations Leon. Nathan Rothschild’s bowling effort against South Yarra. His 9 wicket hall for the match gave the 3rd XI their first win in 15 games. Sam Brygel’s 51 runs and maiden half century. Sam showed maturity beyond his years in the innings. The club is very lucky to have such a promising wicketkeeper batsman. Here’s to a successful 2012/13 season! Jeremy Seigel 3rd XI Captain

Silver ARC 4th XI CAPTAIN’S REPORT – Ian Jones The Silver Arc Fourth Eleven finished 6th on the ladder, winning seven games and losing ten. The MCA Sunday C Grade was a very even competition this season, and the 4ths finished only one game out of the four, mainly due to giving a forfeit early in the season against the bottom side. This cost us valuable points and percentage. Interestingly, the finals in the Sunday competition showed that if you make finals, anything can happen. The two top teams throughout the home and away season both lost their semi finals to Carnegie and Thornbury Turf Strokers (TTS Green) who had lost 9 and 8 games respectively during the year. The 4ths had a better percentage than either Carnegie or TTS and we have never lost to TTS, but you have to get to the finals. TTS Green finished fourth yet won the MCA C Sunday premiership. This is the challenge for us next season – make the finals! It was a really mixed season – there were games where we were completely outplayed. Alternatively, we had some really great wins for the season:after MACC made only 56, Bentleigh were 1/23 and looked headed for an easy win until Josh Jones stepped in with 4 quick wickets, and we rolled them for 39 against TTS Black, we made a competitive 109 at Albert Park, but TTS were 1/51 with lots of overs in hand before Brad Abrahams took 5/23 and Yossi Herbst 3/7 to rout TTS for 93 at Carnegie, we struggled to 5/51 before Osher Klein and Daniel Wein made a club 4th XI record 6th wicket partnership of 139, and then Daniel bowled beautifully to take 4/8 including a hat trick as Carnegie were all out for 55. A really pleasing aspect of the season was the improvement in individual performances at least two players qualified for the batting and bowling averages, which hasn’t happened for several years. Osher Klein won the batting average, and really hit form at the end of the season, making 123 runs in his last two innings without being out.

Other batsmen who did well were Daniel Wein with 207 runs @ 14.79, and Yossi Herbst averaged 15, making 120 runs with his maiden 50. Unfortunately our batting was inconsistent, and there were a few games that we lost by not making sufficient runs, even when we bowled out the opposition for mediocre scores. Bowling was our strength with five bowlers taking 13 wickets or more. Yossi Herbst was our great opening bowler with 26 wickets at an average under 10, while Daniel Wein showed his all round abilities with 15 wickets at an average of 11. In only eight matches Adam Kahlberg took 13 wickets @ 11, and while I’d love to have him playing on Sundays next season, Adam has shown he is capable of playing in the higher Saturday grades. The bowling average was won by Josh Jones with 24 wickets at 8.58. Four times he took three wickets or more, and bowled reliably in many games. I would like to thank the team members for their efforts throughout the season, and I look forward to further improvement from each of them next season. I appreciate their support as I changed the batting or bowling order and also had to roster players out of the team due to our numbers. Being parochial, it was great to have a team comprising almost all Shomer Shabbat players! I’m also very grateful to the MACC players from other teams regularly came to watch us – Jeremy Seigel, Nathan Rothschild, Aaron Fetter and Simon Fisher with thanks to our “no. 1 ticketholder”, Mark Soffer for his support upon his return from overseas. I am especially grateful to Paul Fink – he was outstanding as Chairman of Selectors in his efforts to ensure all teams had a full list of players each game. Thanks also to the selection committee for some lively debate, and for listening to my opinionated views. Also, I need to thank the MACC committee for again taking the risk in appointing me captain. Lastly thanks to my darling wife Alison and daughter Leah for their assistance during the season – the other teams know MACC has the best afternoon teas in the competition, including the pavlova. Finally, the Silver Arc Sunday team has to aim to win finals next season so that we can return to playing two-day cricket in B Grade. Ian Jones Silver ARC 4th XI Captain
