Welcome to the Championships! I often wonder why I have put an average of around 20 hours per week into Racketlon organisation in the last ten years. This has ramped up to even more time in the last six months. It hasn't been for financial reward so what is it for? More recently I haven't been able to put as much time into my accounting business as I would have liked due to this commitment. UK Racketlon is all voluntary and the efforts of the team in the build up to this event have been phenomenal. There are a number of people who are passionate about the sport and this is driven by the amazing people and community that are involved in Racketlon in both the UK and abroad. There is a sense of pride in delivering such a spectacle and a memory which will last forever. Without such an amazing team, this event wouldn't have been possible so I wanted to thank the main team by name and additionally all of the other support we have received. In particular, Duncan Stahl, Leone McKinley and Ray Jordan have given huge energy and time to this endeavour. Additionally Dave Ridout, Richard Middleton, James Pope, Dominique Ford, Rachel Lawrence, Phil Todd and Malcom Boden have provided excellent support. The FIR contribution has been immense including Marcel Weigl (FIR-Executive President), Hans Van Daele (FIR-Delegate) and Graham King (FIR-TS Support). The “dream” team has made the event what it is. Many more have contributed.

Here are some of my favourite Racketlon moments over the years. 1. A Scottish Junior was 21 points down going into tennis against Robert Ollary. The Scot won 21-0 and slammed down an ace on the gumi point. Legend! 2. Poland winning the Racketlon World Championships in 2009, a massive upset against the Scandinavian dominance! 3. Peter Nicol played a full Racketlon match at the English Open in 2008 against Stefan Adamsson doing pretty well in badminton and tennis! 4. Jurgen Melzer playing a Racketlon tennis doubles match with Marcel Weigl (a strong tennis player the international Racketlon president) and losing tennis! 5. Playing the English Open in October 2003 and booking to go to the world championships in Gothenburg afterwards which was a few weeks later. Addicted! 6. Ray Jordan losing his first ten gummi arms before winning his eleventh 7. England winning triple team gold at the 2013 world championships and the open team finishing 5th, their highest ever finish defeating France and a Denmark team containing Jesper Ratzer and Kaspar Jonsson! 8. And finally - a very recent one. I bumped into Nicole Eisler at the (Commonwealth Games) squash in Glasgow 2014. Tweeting Alan Thatcher the announcer and saying the world ranked number 7 Nicole Eisler from Switzerland was in the audience. Alan then read the tweet out on the microphone in front of 1,000 people and talked about Racketlon for a minute or so. Let’s make Racketlon history. Keith Lesser Tournament Director

Dear Racketeers! There we were: various members of English Racketlon sat in a bar in Stockholm at the end of 2012 discussing whether we could host a Racketlon World Championships. Would I have agreed to help if I had known it would mean talking to Keith on the phone on average five times a day, for approximately 18 months? Would Keith have agreed if he had known it would mean talking to me? Now those would have been good questions to ask myself! But here we are: this is the result of all those phone calls, all those arguments, all those compromises, all those ideas, all that delegation, all the blood sweat and tears: the 14th FIR Racketlon World Championships, hosted for the first time in the UK.

These 4 days are the culmination of nearly 2 years work from a huge team of people who have dedicated an unbelievable amount of time, energy and expertise – all in order to deliver something special and memorable to everyone who is a part of this year’s Championships. We hope you all like the ideas we’ve brought to this year’s Championships. We want all the players to feel looked after and valued, to enjoy the facilities and to have a fantastic few days, but we are also determined to try and present the sport in some new and exciting ways in order to give Racketlon the professional platform that it deserves. Enjoy! Duncan Stahl Tournament Chairman

FIR News Dear Racketlon Community, For the 6th time FIR has published a high quality magazine, this time in cooperation with the ERA – English Racketlon Association, the organizers of the 14th FIR World Championships Singles in Great Britain. In 36 pages you can learn everything about the history of FIR including all important statistics, involved persons and some great pictures. The first pages of course belong entirely to the World Championships with over 450 entries from 26 countries. FIR would like to thank Tournament Director Keith Lesser and his “Dream Team” for organizing the most important Racketlon event of the year 2014. Meeting SportAccord President Vizer The year 2014 will not be the historic one just yet. Although FIR has achieved the 40-country benchmark of national Racketlon federations the application for SportAccord membership was rejected. FIR national federations still have homework to be done, all 40 FIR members must be recognized by their NOC`s – National Olympic Committees or NSA`s – National Sports Associations. Yet another milestone was set with FIR-Executive President Marcel Weigl having the chance to personally meet SportAccord President Marius L. Vizer in Budapest, who promised full support for FIR. The highest person of organized sports in the world even invited Marcel Weigl to the SportAccord AGM in Antalya/Turkey, where the FIR-President made important contacts for the future. Ionescu initiates EU sports projects Searching for ways to develop Racketlon and putting up some money FIR has handed in two projects within the new EU Erasmus+ sports program. One is about collaborative partnerships concerning the problems of getting a new sport like Racketlon recognized the other about the organization of a European sport event week. My special thanks goes to Romanian Racketlon president Radu Ionescu who took the initiative and put in uncountable number of hours together with his partner Alexandra Litescu to make these hand ins possible. If FIR is granted subsidiaries for one of the projects will be known in September.

Thanks to King, Buchanan and Tauson My second big thank you this year goes to Graham King, who has volunteered support in the transition from Resultreporter to Tournament Software. Finally all data is transferred and the FIR world rankings are now also online and calculated automatically every month. This leaves me to say thank you for all the last years and farewell to former World Rankings compilers Katy Buchanan and her father John, as well as Resultreporter inventor Rickard Tauson. President with sponsor contacts needed Leaving the past it is time to look into the future. At the Team and Double World Champs in Poland at the end of November a new FIR Council shall be elected. After 9! years as Executive President it is time for a change. The time has come for a clear separation between a “representing” President and a “working” General Secretary. A famous name with contacts to sponsors as a President and on the other hand a 40-hour General Secretary who speaks, thinks and sleeps Racketlon 24 hours a day are needed. A new concept and money is needed, it is not possible to run an international sports federation with 42 member nations half-time on the side any longer. The three council members Karim Hanna, Dany Lessard and Nathalie Zeoli will leave the council, thank you for your assistance over the past years. Patrick Laplante Jr. and Graham King have offered themselves as replacements and I still hope one candidate will be sent by the Racketlon Women’s Association. If they request equal rights, they need to do something for it. No matter what the future will bring, the presence will present us a few new world champions. So let the games begin… Marcel Weigl FIR – Executive President

Tournament Rules Introduction The Rules and Regulations of the FIR - Federation Internationale de Racketlon are based on the rules of the individual spor ts table tennis, badminton, squash and tennis - and can be found on www.racketlon.net. Below is a shor t summary of the rules which apply for the 14th FIR Singles World Championships 2014. In the event of a conflict between the summary and the full rules, it is the full rules which will apply. Order of play The four sets shall be played in the order table tennis, badminton, squash, tennis. Scoring Every rally results in a point to the winner of the rally. The winner of each set is the first who reaches 21 points, except that if the score reaches 20-20, the set is extended until there is a margin of two points. A set can therefore end for example at 2220 or 36-34, but never at 21-20. The winner of a racketlon match is not the one that wins the most sets but the one that scores the most points in total. This means that it is possible to lose three out of the four sets and still win the match. If after all four sets both players have exactly the same number of points, then one extra point - known as the “gummiarm point” is played in tennis. The winner of this single gummiarm point is also the winner of the match. Serving The initial order of serving, receiving and ends in each of the four sets shall be decided by one single toss before the match star ts. The winner of the toss decides whether to star t serving or receiving in table tennis. If player A star ts serving in table tennis, he star ts receiving in badminton, star ts serving in squash, and star ts receiving in tennis. In each set, the player who star ts receiving decides what end to star t from (except in squash of course). The server has two service points in a row

and star ts to serve from right to left in all spor ts. The second service point is then from left to right (except in table tennis of course). At 20-20 each player only has one service point at a time, star ting from right to left. At 21-21 the player serves from left to right, and so on. If a gummiarm point is required, the choice of serving or receiving for that single point shall be decided by a toss. The winner of the toss may either choose to serve or to receive. The loser of the toss decides from which side the service should be played – either right to left or left to right. (The choice of ends is not given – both players stay at the same end as they played the previous point). To offset the server’s advantage, there is no second service on the gummiarm point. Time regulations The official tournament time is on the PC at the tournament desk and published on fir.tournamentsoftware.com It is the responsibility of the players to repor t to the tournament desk on time for their match. In each set, ends are switched at a time when 11 points are first reached by one of the players. A maximum break of one minute shall be allowed at that time. The break between sets shall be at most “3+3” minutes, meaning that (a) warming up at the next spor t has to commence within 3 minutes of the end of the previous set (b) the next stet has to commence within 6 minutes of the end of the previous set. Play must be continuous at all times (as far as can reasonably be expected). Referees have the right to penalise players under the misconduct rule should they breach this. Each player can ask for one injury time-out of 5 minutes per match. Referees Referees will be provided for every match in the Women A class and the Men A class (including matches for places) and for finals and semi-finals in all other classes as a minimum. The team will also aim to provide referees for other matches if the refe-

reeing schedule permits. In case of a dispute arising in a match (in any category), a player may ask the head referee to provide a referee for the rest of that match. There will be a Head Referee for the tournament and there will be Head Referees for each of the four spor ts, who will be responsible for providing the referees for their respective spor ts. All players registered for the tournament have specified – as par t of the entry form - one or more spor ts which they would be able to referee if requested. All players can be asked to referee a reasonable number of sets, of course taking into account their own schedule of matches. In the unlikely event of any act of misconduct by a player, the player shall be penalised by the referee according to the rules set out in Section 3.7 (Conduct on Cour t) of the Rules of Racketlon. Scheduling The Tournament Director is responsible for scheduling. FIR delegates There will be two FIR delegates on site. They are entitled to all final decisions concerning the tournament and stand above the Tournament Director and the Head Referee. Other rules All players are guaranteed at least three singles rounds in each draw. By entering the tournament, all par ticipants accept the FIR rules and par ticipate at their own risk. Neither FIR nor the English Racketlon Association shall be liable for any loss, damage or injury. Trophies The top 3 players in all single draws will receive trophies or medals. Prize money and trophies can only be received by all players taking par t in the official prize winning ceremonies.

Marketing guide Get more entries for your tournament 1. Build relationships, communities and networks - Encourage other players from your country to travel to tournaments abroad. If you are a Tournament Director, travel and build relationships yourself also. Don't automatically expect people to come to your tournament if you don't go to them. 2. Cost – Cost is a massive factor for players in entering and travelling to tournaments. It also applies to organisers looking to market their event.

• •

If you can't afford to travel, try and find a sponsor or some funding. There is additionally the option to turn it into a holiday. Some racketlon tournaments around the world are in great destinations. Couchsurfing – Couchsurfing.org is a hospitality exchange and social networking website. The website provides a platform for members to "surf " on couches by staying as a guest at a host's home, host travellers, or join an event. No money is exchanged. You don’t have to host, you can simply surf.

3. Coaching, Networking and Practice - Want to improve? Want your players to improve? Come up with reciprocal coaching arrangements. Encourage table tennis players to learn tennis from tennis players all within the racketlon community. Organise practice sessions. 4. Talk to people on a personal basis – this makes a massive difference. Keep in touch with people and see what they are up to. Email people and get them involved. There are a lot of good characters out there that enjoy this sport and just need a bit of encouragement. 5. Use social media – set-up facebook and twitter and start engaging with people. Tweet to @keithracketlon and start building your followers. 6. Sell the benefits – what other sport can you achieve such greatness so quickly? Mix with international players and improve your ranking. 7. Show people the video – this is a generic video to show people that are new to the sport. http://vimeo.com/96060294

Ask players to visit - Stay with other players or organisers, offer players to stay at your place when they come to your tournament or camp in a tent.

Save this video in your favourites and have it on hand to share at a moment’s notice!

Share transpor t and driving. Racketlon.co.uk/wc2014

GB University Racketlon 2014 has been a very busy year for English Racketlon. As well as preparing for the World Champs we launched our mission to develop Racketlon across UK universities. This initiative was led by Leone McKinley, a graduate of one the UK's top sporting universities - University of Stirling in Scotland. This is her report: Having been very involved in the spor ts union at Stirling, I was aware of the very well developed spor ts leagues and the access that students had to top class spor ting facilities and coaching across each of the 4 racketlon disciplines, both at recreational and a competitive level. I firmly believe that Universities provide a natural place from which to develop the spor t in the UK. The current world Number two, Calum Reid, star ted his Racketlon career, whilst at university and attributes much of his success to the uni clubs. Having never played badminton or squash before, he was able to join the uni clubs and immediately gain access to top coaching and very strong training par tners. Calum's effor ts in Racketlon were recognised by the University and he went on to win International Blues and was named Spor ts Person of the year 2007 for his endeavours. Perhaps we can unear th fur ther future racketlon stars? Cer tainly 2014 has been a great season for University of Nottingham student, Will Coley, who played his first tournament at the Yorkshire Open in March before going onto win the Men's B at the British Champs in April. We look forward to watching Will's progress in the future. In April 2014, the ERA held the first ever University Championships at Surrey Spor ts Park and had almost 40 competitors from over 10 universities. Matej Dhonal (Sheffield Hallam) took the University Mens A title and Ezster Dora Soos (University of Bath) was victorious in the Women's category. Hayden Lau took

14th FIR World Racketlon Championships

the B and John Watson (University of Nottingham) took the C. The event was a huge success and we are delighted that many of the players have caught the Racketlon bug and returned to play at other UK tour events. What has also been encouraging is the number of Universities who have held their own Racketlon tournament amongst their own clubs including: University of Aberdeen, University of Stirling, University of Essex, University of Surrey, University of Bradford, University of Manchester and Newcastle University. Over the coming months we will reach out to more universities. We already have events lined up at Oxford and advanced discussions have taken place at Loughborough and we will hold a University class at the English Open in Dudley in October (11/12th). Looking into 2015 and beyond we would like to gain suppor t from the British University and Colleges Spor ts Association (BUCS) and suppor t any University who wants to run their own tournament. Our ultimate aim is for Racketlon to have its own competitive league recognised by BUCS. For anyone who would like to join the University Racketlon sub committee then please get in touch with Leone McKinley at [email protected] And of course if any other Racketlon associations would like some tips on how to roll out a similar programme then we'd be happy to share.
