Lots of Americans are still torqued in the wake of last week’s Supreme Court ruling on gay marriage. But a clear majority of Americans are actually happy that those with same sex attraction may enjoy the benefits of civil marriage. This controversy is fueling a lot of heated arguments. Some are contending that if people don’t accept the ruling it’s only because they fear or hate people who are gay. Others are accusing those who don’t attack the decision as not being true Christians. I sense a lot of heat but little light emerging from such arguments. I am opposed to the decision because it creates a constitutional right out of whole cloth. The five justices who carried the day personally believed that gay people should be able to enjoy the benefits of civil marriage and wrote an argument favoring that belief. The same could be said of the four justices who angrily dissented. Perspective is very important here. I don’t believe that the court changed the definition of marriage because it has no power to do so. What it did was rule that there is something called civil marriage to which gay couples now have access in all fifty states. Jesus states clearly in the gospels that marriage between a man and a woman was willed by God from the very beginning. Moreover, He elevated marriage to the status of a covenant in which he enables faithful husbands and wives to bear witness to his love for his people, the church. We need a resurgence of such marriages within the church and seek ways to communicate its unique value to our children and our children’s children.

In The Blessed Sacrament

Covenant marriages have been on the rocks for a long time, long before any gay couple could form a desire to be married. It started with the sexual revolution of the 60’s and 70’s that has changed the way many, even most people, think of sexual relations. They think of sex as private, intimate acts between consenting adults that no one may judge. Children as young as pre-teens have discovered pornography and masturbation and the “hookup” culture that regards sex acts as morally neutral. They grow up thinking of sex more like a form of recreation than a sacred act given to us by God to build up a bond of love and to bring children into the world. Most of them do not marry, even in civil ceremonies. Many who do marry do so in the knowledge that if it doesn’t work out they can always seek another partner later. Let’s face it there are many families that are in trouble because of the abandonment of covenant marriage.

The chapel is accessible at all times. The combination is 415. The door will lock safely behind you.

In my view, this is the bigger problem and the one which we can do something about through a change of heart.

Come, Visit the Lord

While we are on schedule come close to a million dollars in total income for the fiscal year that ends on June 30, this will represent a decline of some $80K from last year. We have been enormously blessed with good and generous stewards but we should not let our guard down by claiming that we have plenty of money on hand. Even families who don’t have to worry where their next meal is coming from are ever attentive that the primary credit needs to be given to God. In a parish, the more generous individual donors are, the more able the parish is to accomplish its mission. Week of Jun 28, 15

PREPARING FOR BAPTISM CLASS SUNDAY, JUL 12th 12:45PM IN ROOM 4

This is a one session class that is required of all parents who are baptizing a child for the first time. First time godparents are also welcome, but participation is optional. Following this class, parents must contact Father Jack to see if there may be any special circumstances in scheduling the actual baptism. Father Jack needs to be contacted at least 30 days before the baptism. Here’s a little preview of some of the things that are covered during the class: 

Since baptism is only the first of three Sacraments of Initiation, parents & godparents make a commitment to raising children in the Catholic faith that comes to us from the Apostles.

The Catholic faith is largely shaped and formed through our faithful (not periodic) participation in Sunday Mass. Children are baptized so that they may have a place among the people who offer the Mass.

Church law requires only one baptismal sponsor. This individual must be a Catholic who is 18 years of age or over, has been confirmed, and is actively practicing their Catholic faith. If there are two sponsors (godmother, godfather), both must be confirmed, practicing Catholics. Parents who have not yet been married in the Catholic Church need to speak to the Pastor before planning a date for baptism.

At least one parent must be a practicing Catholic in order to baptize and raise a child according to the faith of the Church.

Parents must attend the Mass after which the child is going to be baptized
