People who visit San Sebastian return home astonished at its landscape and cuisine. But not by these things alone; it is also worth highlighting the hospitality of the people of San Sebastian and their open attitude to visitors, as this is what they encounter when they are among us. People from San Sebastian are fully aware of how important tourism is to the city and at times they become the best tourist guides. In fact, they are proud to show off their city to visitors.

Additionally, our visitors become San Sebastian’s best ambassadors: by telling people at home about their experience, they highlight different feelings, special feelings, which make people who hear about them want to come to San Sebastian in order to relive these experiences. Visiting San Sebastian is not any old choice. The city is committed to excellence, with pride in its cuisine, the environment, culture and leisure, all of which means that it has created a complete and attractive package. But tourism is not something we have invented in recent years. Over a century ago tourists started visiting our city. So we are not going to invent it, but we do want to give it a boost at these times of crisis. Furthermore, we must not forget that 2013 is a special year for the city. This year we are commemorating 200 years since the destruction, and therefore the project to rebuild the city which was undertaken by the people of San Sebastian. As part of this commemoration, the City Council has organised various events to which we invite the people of San Sebastian and visitors alike. In 2016 San Sebastian will be the European Capital of Culture, together with the Polish city of Wroclaw, which will be hugely useful for showing off what San Sebastian has to offer and an extraordinary opportunity to show what we can bring to the world in terms of culture. s a city of 183,000 inhabitants, with an unusual cultural activity for its size. ing Sancho El Sabio of Navarra’s need for a clear route out to sea for his kingdom led him to grant the Fuero (or privilege of self-governance) to San Sebastian in 1180, including a series of laws which we can assume to be the official foundation of the town. Maritime trade began to join forces with the traditional activities of cod and whale hunting. Proximity to France and its position on the Road to Santiago route not only encouraged the development of this little coastal town, but also turned it into a strategic key point during times of war; for this reason it became a garrison town during the 12th century. Although it suffered numerous sieges over the course of centuries, the inhabitants always managed to save the city from its enemies; at least, until 1719, when the first capitulation

of the town took place, falling into French hands for two years. In 1794 the city surrendered once again to sieges by the French, this time until 1813, when AngloPortuguese soldiers “liberated” Saint Sebastian, burning and looting the city. Only a few houses remained standing, forcing the citizens to build it from scratch, thereby creating the Old Part we know today. Happier times were to follow, when Queen Isabel II, whose doctors recommended sea bathing to alleviate her skin afflictions, made summering in San Sebastian fashionable. This was back in 1845, and from then on her presence attracted the Court and numerous members of the aristocracy during the summer months. The city started to become famous and needed space to grow and expand.

Although theories abound as to earlier origins, the first written evidence of San Sebastian dates back to 1014, arising from the donation to Leire of the Monastery of San Sebastian, located in El Antiguo Quarter, by Sancho el Mayor, King of Navarre.

Chronology of main historical events 1014: Donation to Leire of the Monastery of San Sebastian by Sancho El Mayor of Navarra. 1180: The King of Navarra, Sancho El Sabio, grants the Municipal Charter of San Sebastian, thought to be the founding of the city. 1200: San Sebastian and Gipuzkoa join the Kingdom of Castilla. 1450: Construction of the first trading port. 1522: Carlos I grants the city the title “Most Noble and Loyal Town”.

The walls were demolished in 1864, and the urban development that took place gave rise to the Ensanche Cortázar, the current town centre. San Sebastian reclaimed land from the Urumea river and the marshes were turned into new neighbourhoods, giving birth to a new, more serviceable city. At the beginning of the 20th Century, San Sebastian experienced a strong population surge and began a period known as the “Belle Époque”, becoming the preferred tourist destination of the European upper classes. Queen Maria Cristina installed the court in the Miramar Palace during the summer months and luxury hotels, casinos and theatres flourished in response… During the First World War, moneyed Europeans took refuge from the conflict in San Sebastian. Much of the French

influence which is noticeable in the town can be attributed to these visitors. Not quite such happy times followed with the prohibition of gambling in 1925 and the Spanish Civil War in 1936, in spite of which the city continued to be a favourite amongst the upper classes. The following years of heavy industrialisation gave rise to a dark period to which several errors in urbanisation can be attributed. However, during the second half of the 20th century, San Sebastian consolidated its economic, cultural and tourist potential, encouraging new projects and, at the same time, preserving its natural and historical heritage, becoming, in the process, the magnificent combination of modernity and tradition that we know today.

1597: Plague devastates the city. The infected were treated on the Island of Santa Clara. 1662: Felipe IV concedes the title of City. 1719-1721: First capitulation of San Sebastian to French forces. 1794-1813: Surrender to French domination. 1813: The English-Portuguese liberated the city, burning and destroying it almost completely. 1845: Isabel II makes La Concha beach fashionable. 1864: Demolition of the old walls surrounding the city. 1888: The first stone of the Church of El Buen Pastor is laid, being finished in 1897, and designated a Cathedral in 1953. 1893: Queen María Cristina establishes the court’s summer residence in the Miramar Palace. 1912: The funicular in Igeldo, Victoria Eugenia Theatre and María Cristina Hotel are inaugurated. 1953: First edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival.

Below we present a journey around San Sebastian’s most magical places.

ne enters the Old Part through “La Bretxa” Market 1 , thus named because it was where English troops under Wellington penetrated the city during the siege of 1813. Now renovated as shopping and entertainment centre, it conserves its traditional market. The streets in the Old Town are bursting with life and a constant coming and going of passers-by. At dusk, the bars and restaurants fill up with both young and old. The most atmospheric street by far is Fermín Calbetón 2 and its bars are absolutely irresistible. The Constitución Square 3 lies in the heart of the Old Town. It is the nerve centre of San Sebastian, where the vast majority of festive events take place. The colourful façades, with numbers painted onto every balcony, remind us that this was once a bullring. From San Jerónimo Street we come to the 31 de Agosto 4 , the only street in the city that remained standing after it was sacked and burnt in 1813. Here we find the Trinidad Square hidden away, with a Basque Pelota court for playing pelota and a grandstand to witness sporting competitions and concerts. Nowadays, this street constitutes one of the main historical arteries of San Sebastian. San Vicente Church 5 , the oldest in the city built at the beginning of the 16th century, lies at one extreme. Of austere Gothic style, its ribbed vaults, counterpoints and the statue of Christ, creation by Felipe de Arizmendi, are particularly noteworthy. Santa María Basilica 6 lies at the other end, erected on the

foundations of an old Romanesque church, whose outstanding feature is the Baroque façade dominated by a sculpture of San Sebastian, the Christian martyr. Pay a visit to Virgen del Coro, the church’s Cross, by Chillida, or sit on the steps to contemplate the beautiful view, with the Cathedral of El Buen Pastor in the background. Very close to this, a steep staircase eroded by the footsteps of centuries, leads us to Paseo de los Curas 7 (The Priests’ Promenade), a privileged viewpoint where once upon a time the priests would stroll under the shade of the trees. High up on Mount Urgull we find La Mota Castle 8 , constructed in the 12th century and a key element in the town’s defence. You can still see today the cannons that the army used against enemy troops. At the peak, the Sacred Heart monument presides over the city from the heights. Cementerio de los Ingleses 9 (English Cemetery) is towards the north. Descending a set of steps one finds the San Telmo Museum 10 , housed in a 16th-century Dominican convent featuring a beautiful Herrerian cloister inside. In 2011, the facility reopened its doors after extensive remodelling work on the convent and an expansion of the museum, yielding a cutting-edge building. San Telmo contains an important ethnographic collection on Basque culture, in addition to works by Ignacio Zuloaga and José María Sert.

Area

From the Boulevard to Araba Park

T

he romantique area starts at the Boulevard 11 , which separates the Old Town from the district constructed after the demolition of the wall, and which has been rehabilitated and transformed into a bustling pedestrian zone. The tree-lined avenue is presided over by the Bandstand and the Town Hall, which is renowned as being one of the most beautiful buildings in Spain. Originally intended as a casino, some of the most magnificent parties of the era were held in its salons. The gardens of Alderdi Eder, with their characteristic tamarinds, can be found opposite. Just a couple of blocks further on is Gipuzkoa Square 12 , a square which exudes tranquillity and romanticism. On one of its sides, the Palace of the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council 13 stands out a neo-classic building by the architect Goikoa. Here once can line up to the elegant streets

of Churruca and Getaria to get to the Bilbao Square 21 crossing the heart of the Romantic Area or going towards the river to discover the inseparable duo formed by the Victoria Eugenia Theatre and the María Cristina Hotel 14 next to the river. Celebrities ranging from Mata Hari to John Malkovich have admired the neo-plateresque façade of the theatre and have succumbed to the warm luxury pervading the hotel, hotel which has just celebrated its centenary. A sculpture honouring Admiral Oquendo, looking towards the Santa Catalina Bridge 15 , -the oldest in the city-, stands between these buildings. Paseo de Francia 16 is simply stunning, and with its stately French-style mansion houses, is one of the most romantic corners of the city. Here we find the Estación del Norte 17 (Renfe Station), whose interior canopy is a creation of the engineer Biarez,

a student of Eiffel’s. On the other side of the canopy is elegant Cristina-Enea Park 18 , whose gardens adjoin the Tabakalera 19 building, a former tobacco factory which is going to be the ultrafuturistic International Contemporary Culture Centre. To return via the other bank, we cross over the María Cristina Bridge 20 , probably one of the most beautiful in the whole San Sebastian, whose four heavilyornamented obelisks represent Peace and Progress. This flows into Bilbao Square 21 , which, with its circular shape, breaks with the rationalist style of the adjacent streets. From here, Alfonso VIII Street, we come to the square of the Cathedral of El Buen Pastor 22 , a centennial temple in neogothic style with Eduardo Chillida’s Peace Cross on its central façade, the Post Office and Koldo Mitxelena Cultural Centre 23 , which houses an extensive library and where periodic exhibitions take place. Just a step away is Prim street 24 , whose elegant façades and doorways dating from the beginning of the 20th century feature a number of exquisite Modernist details. Take a good look at numbers 17 and 28. At the end of the street, the old Bellas Artes Theatre 25 marks the end of the district and the beginning of Amara Quarter. The Araba Park 26 , in the Centenario Square, softens with its greenery the transition between styles. We can return along the Paseo del Arbol de Gernika, which runs parallel to the river and whose mansion houses are hidden behind the branches of the elms crowding the pavements.

Romantic San Sebastian covers the length of the Ensanche Cortázar and was planned at the end of the 19th century after the protective city walls were demolished. The streets, forming a perpendicular pattern, outline an ordered and serene city, where sandstone buildings blend into the surroundings and the French influence is easily discerned in their design. 11

From MonpAs to Peine del Viento (Wind Comb) The sea is the protagonist of this route, which starts at Monpas Point, beneath Mount Ulia and ends on the slopes of Mount Igeldo. The walk covers about six kilometres, without leaving the coastline, and encompasses the three San Sebastian beaches –Zurriola, La Concha and Ondarreta–, whose environment management system has received the ISO 14001 quality label, following the St. James’ Way (Camino de Santiago) which goes along the coast. 12

ur route starts at Monpas Point 27 . This is a favourite meeting place for surfers, but no need to rush - there is always someone there whatever the time of day. From here, Zurriola Promenade 28 runs alongside the beach which is the limit of Gros district, ending at the Kursaal Congress Centre and Auditorium 29 - a symbol of the new architecture and cultural direction of the city, which was conceived by architect Rafael Moneo as two rocks grounded on the seashore. Crossing the Zurriola Bridge 30 , a fine example of Modernism which enhances the estuary of the Urumea river, we come to the Paseo Nuevo 31 (“New Promenade”), which runs along the foot of Mount Urgull. On days of heavy seas the waves quite often reach the promenade. Continuing along next to the sea, we come to Jorge Oteiza’s work, Construcción Vacía 32 (Empty Construction). Some flights of steps lead towards the port, via the Aquarium and Naval Museum 33 . Do not miss visiting them. The port 34 is home to both fishing and pleasure boats, with

! the brightly coloured fishermen’s dwellings forming a backdrop. At the end of the port we come to the Town Hall 35 – a former casino, and the Real Club Náutico, a striking building in Rationalist style, whose concept is that of a boat moored to a quay. Take a stroll along the jetty and savour the sea at your feet. A bit further on we find the “La Perla Thalasso/Sports Centre” 36 , today a modern facility, which was once one of the world’s leading spas. Continuing alongside La Concha Beach we can see “Homenaje a Fleming” 37 , by Chillida. This is a lovely spot to relax and contemplate the scenery, looking over towards Santa Clara Island. From the Paseo de La Concha (La Concha Promenade) we can get to Miramar Palace 38 , built in the Queen Anne English Cottage style as the summer residence of the Court under Queen María Cristina. Descending by the other entrance we come to the district of El Antiguo – the “Old Quarter”, so called because the very first inhabitants of the city lived there.

Don’t miss... The waves of Zurriola beach attract surfing enthusiasts throughout the year. In the summertime it is the site of a series of championships, and in June the city sponsors the Surfilm Festival where a series of audiovisual features related to this sport and its lifestyle are presented.

Next, Ondarreta Beach, with its promenade and gardens which form a backdrop for a statue in honour of Queen María Cristina 39 , leads us to one of the most beautiful spots in the city: the Peine del Viento 40 , or Wind Comb, a work of art by architect Luis Peña Ganchegui and sculptor Eduardo Chillida. The combination of wrought iron, stone and sea creates a unique and incomparable setting. Be sure to ride Basque Country’s oldest funicular 41 railway (1912) up Mount Igeldo: the view from the top will take your breath away.

The Victoria Eugenia Theatre and María Cristina Hotel

A classical-style cobbled area created at the mouth of the River Urumea is the setting for two buildings inextricably linked with the Gipuzkoan capital’s glorious past: María Cristina Hotel –one of the epicentres of the International Film Festival held in September– and Victoria Eugenia Theatre, a one-off neoPlateresque edifice which, for decades, was the main

projection hall of the festival. Its seats have been occupied by the likes of Alfred Hitchcock, Woody Allen, Meryl Streep and Richard Gere.

San Vicente Church This is the city’s most time-hallowed place of worship, a 16th-century Gothic building. The 16th-century central altarpiece is regarded as one of the best examples of Romanism (School of Michelangelo). Other important works are the “Medallion of Souls” (Medallón de Ánimas) and 44

Constitución Square

Set in the heart of the Old Town, the Constitución Square was erected after the devastating fire of 1813, on the ground plan of the old forum which used to exist in that place, dating from the late 17th century. The dominant structure within the square, originally built as the Town Hall, is a neo-Classical building with large columns on which the flag is hoisted on St. Sebastian’s Day (20th January), the city’s most emotive fiesta. The numbering of the houses is a throwback to the bullfights which, in olden days, took place here.

Basilica of Santa María del Coro The Basilica of Santa María is the city’s finest example of Baroque and Churrigueresque art, recognizable by the image of St. Sebastian on its façade. It holds within it a sculpture of the city’s patron saint, Nuestra Señora del Coro (Our Lady of the Choir), and the Cristo de la Paz y Paciencia (Christ of Peace and Patience), a 16th-century sculpture which, for many years, was positioned above one of the gateways in the town walls. The church was erected in the 18th century with funds provided by the (Real Compañía Guipuzcoana de Caracas) Royal Gipuzkoan Company of Caracas, following the destruction of the former building in 1688 by an explosion of gunpowder in the arsenal of Urgull Castle.

The Town Hall

The present-day Town Hall, situated at one end of Alderdi Eder Gardens, was built in 1882 as a swanky Casino. Its eclectic, monumental style was inspired by the great gaming saloons of Europe. The Casino was operating until gaming became

prohibited in the mid-1920’s, and so it was here that many significant episodes of Donostia’s Belle Époque took place. A few years later, it was acquired as the City Hall, and that is still its function today.

Cathedral of El Buen Pastor Built in the late 19th century, in a mere 10 years, the Cathedral of El Buen Pastor is inspired by the great Mediaeval houses of worship of Germany and France. With its sharply-pointed spire it is the highest building in San Sebastian, and stands in a majestic square. This square has a porticoed gallery at one end and, at the other, the Post Office building and the Koldo Mitxelena Cultural Centre, in whose halls interesting exhibitions are periodically held. 6 15

On a stroll through the city one can admire works by great artists of the stature of Eduardo Chillida and Jorge Oteiza: compositions that form an integral part of the city’s physiognomy and forge links between it and its natural environment.

I

f we talk about contemporary art in San Sebastian, we must evoke the figure of Eduardo Chillida. The sculptor not only projected the image of La Concha far beyond our frontiers, but he has also made his work one of the most recognised icons of our geography. As a sample, the Peine del Viento (Wind Comb), his most beloved creation, and the perfect starting point for following the artist’s steps through the city. We can feel them in the Pico del Loro -where we can visit the tribute to Rafael Balerdi-, in La Concha Promenade -”Homenje a Fleming”-, in Mount Urgull -with Pedro Arana’s bust in one of its hills-, and in the two main churches, the Cathedral of El Buen Pastor and the Basilica of Santa María, exhibiting two of his crosses. The Chillida-Leku Museum, five kilometres from the city centre, is the last work by Eduardo Chillida when he was alive: a green space inhabited by his works where the visitor can ‘get lost’, although it is now temporarily closed.

The contact with the sea has left an unmistakable mark in the Peine del Viento (Comb of the Wind), by Eduardo Chillida.

Other big artists like Jorge Oteiza also “exhibit” their works in the streets of San Sebastian: we can find his ‘Empty Construction’ in Paseo Nuevo, defying the rough sea, and on the outside façade of the San Vicente Church, located in the Old Town, we can enjoy the sculpture of La Pietà. In addition, the city also offers a wide range of art galleries and exhibition halls such as the Koldo Mitxelena Cultural Centre, an interesting rotating exhibition by new art stars, or the Kutxa Kubo Hall, offering a continuous programming of temporal exhibitions with international projection. This artistic route is rounded out by “Tabakalera”, the future International Contemporary Culture Center in the former Tobacco building. In a city marked by architectural classicism, we should stand out new buildings like the Kursaal Congress Centre and Auditorium, a work by Rafael Moneo, or the interventions made in Miramon, being the Eureka! Zientzia Museoa the best example.

he year San Sebastian gets rolling with the Dock of the Bay Music Documentary Film Festival, held in January. Two months later it is followed by the “dFeria” San Sebastian International Theater Fair, an essential event in the Performing Arts sector. The Film and Human Rights Festival has become a major event on the city’s cultural calendar, seeking to promote solidarity, justice and equality, among other values. In May the city also hosts the Rompeolas Festival out of a commitment to turn the city into a place of harmonious coexistence and cultural diversity. June’s Surfilm Festibal is one of the most eagerly awaited events amongst young fans of surfing and film, while July fills the air with music with the Jazzaldia International Jazz Festival, which every year features a brilliant and complete program.

The strong turnout for each edition of the Musical Fortnight indicates city residents’ devotion to symphonic music. Being the 2016 European Capital of Culture is a challenge and at the same time the opportunity which San Sebastian needed in order to project itself onto the international scene with new ventures and to renew its cultural life. San Sebastian creates, schedules, disseminates, consumes, enjoys and invests in culture like few cities of its size in the world do, but it needs to do so even more.

he festive calendar is inaugurated by the popular tamborrada, which takes place on January 20th, the Day of San Sebastian, the patron saint of the city. The fiesta starts on the previous night with dinners out in restaurants or gastronomic societies. At midnight the city’s flag is hoisted in the Constitución Square to the rhythm of the San Sebastian march. In the morning an army of 5.000 children dressed as drummers take part in the children’s parade.

Around February comes the city’s carnival, the most important celebration during the winter months. It is announced by the tradition’s roaring caldereros (boilermakers) which, as the old song says, “come from Hungary.” The comparsa band of iñudes and artzaias evokes the banter between nursemaids and the shepherds who courted them. And the carnival, with the appearance of the god Moma, fills the streets with color.

Bringing the year to an end, the Santo Tomás fair, held on December 21st, is one of the most keenly anticipated of Donostia events. The fiesta commemorates the old market which used to be held in San Sebastian, when the farmers and ranchers of the province used to come down to the capital to pay their taxes and display the best of their produce.

The arrival of summer is marked by the festivities of June 23rd, the eve of the solstice, with the blessing of the Tree of St John in the Constitución Square. This is followed by a performance of the traditional Basque dance aurresku and at midnight bonfires are lit throughout the city. Later on in the summer comes the principal fiesta of Donostia, the Semana Grande, which celebrates the festival of the Virgen de la Asunción (Virgin of the Assumption) and takes place throughout the whole of the week of August 15th. A packed programme of street parties, performances and cultural and sporting events fill the day. But the

In September, the feast comes with the Euskal Jaiak and their complete festive programme including sports and dances. It immerses the city into a big popular celebration. An early 20th-century amusement park crowns Mount Igeldo. Oozing “Belle Epoque” charm, it offers a wide range of attractions such as a roller coaster, haunted house and “Mysterious River.” Visitors can arrive by car, though the ideal way is to take the funicular railway ascending the mountain. an Sebastian has three beaches: La Concha (which means “the shell”), Ondarreta, and Zurriola. The first two are very near each other, while the third one -the biggest one- is located in the Gros Quarter. All have fresh water showers and free fountains for the visitors. Likewise, a service of collective boxes offers the possibility to hire lockers, changing room, warm water showers, and infrastructures for disabled people. Moreover, the beaches of La Concha and Ondarreta offer sunshades, parasols, and tents. In Zurriola, you can also hire deckchairs. All these services are available during the summer season, from June to September. In the Santa Clara Island, there is a small beach and a series of minimum services -showers, fountains, a bar…- in order to cover the essential needs of the visitors. The boats to access

the island depart from the port every thirty minutes, but only during summer months. The hills of mounts Igeldo and Ulia hide a series of rock caves that, although difficult to access and with no services, offer peace and intimacy. The “Ciudad de San Sebastián” catamaran offers sea excursions through La Concha Bay and the nearby coast lasting half an hour. It is available throughout all the year -weekends and bank holidays-, although, in summer, these services are available all days. Thalassotherapy

The relationship between San Sebastian and the sea is completed with the La Perla Talasso Sport centre. The building has its roots in the Royal Summers of the beginning of the 20th century. La Perla has therapeutic circuits with seawater as the main protagonist.

rom the beginning of the 20th century, bets and games of chance were of vital importance in San Sebastian, as shown by the new present Town Hall, which was created to house the facilities of a casino. At present, the city still has as high number of leisure and bingo halls, like the Kursaal Casino, located at the Mayor Street of the Old Town, few metres from Town Hall. In warm months, the Racecourse, placed next to San Sebastián, opens the doors to house different essential competitions of the national horserace calendar during twelve Sundays. In San Sebastian, horseracing lovers have been always loyal to these events for decades. This activity, together with the rowing boat races of La Concha Bay, at the end of summer, represents one of

the best ways of enjoying an eventful summer with bets and challenges. Maritime competitions gather thousands of people the length and breadth of the bay, turning it into an amphitheatre filled with faithful. One of the most deep-rooted Basque traditions, as far as competitive sports are concerned, takes place in the pelota courts of San Sebastian, which are the venue of important pelota competitions; hand pelota, pala (with a bat) and remonte (with a basket glove). Part of the success of each of these categories of play is based on the bids and bets which constantly take place in the stands.

Perched on one of the hills surrounding San Sebastian, Aiete Park is the area’s most beautiful and extensive monumental garden. Designed by Frenchman Pierre Ducasse at the end of the nineteenth century, it is presided over by a magnificent palace which was Franco’s summer residence and, more recently, home to the Peace and Human Rights House. The complex includes flowerbeds, decorative pools, as well as a temperate rainforest with numerous species of trees, from sequoias to magnolias, oaks and yews.

2. Miramar Park With spectacular views over La Concha Bay, Miramar Park was a royal residence where Queen María Cristina and Kings Alfonso XIII and Juan Carlos de Borbón spent their summers. A graceful setting for a spectacular palace inspired by the Queen Anne English Cottage style, designed by English architect Selden Wornum, Miramar Gardens slope gently down to the sea, between gravel paths and flower beds.

Enea 3. Cristina Park

Set within the square street plan of the inner city, Cristina Enea Park is a green oasis created by the Duke of Mandas in honour of his wife. After she died, he donated it to San Sebastian on one condition: that its original appearance never be altered. His wishes have been respected, and today the park has all the charm of a bygone age, with peacocks and swans, exotic varieties of trees and a complete footpath network.

4. Miramón Park Situated 5 minutes from the city centre is the huge Miramón Park, the land on which the Eureka! Science Museum is located. Its gardens play host to the miniature Gipuzkoa collection, with reproductions of the province’s most iconic buildings. But, without a doubt, the best-known landmarks on Miramón’s skyline are the Arbide Towers, two neoGothic buildings which were transferred, stone by stone, from the centre of San Sebastian to this new site.

Mount Urgull is the city’s most frequented and central park. In it stand the remains of the castle which in olden days defended San Sebastian. The whole park is a 3-dimensional natural playground with charming spots, paths, reminders of the past and a wide range of plant species with exuberant foliage all year round. Urgull will also reward you with some of the best panoramic views over La Concha Bay.

The highest of Donostia’s three coastal mounts provides one of the most splendid panoramic views over the city, and other memorable sights such as its working lighthouse which lights up as daylight fades. Crowned by a tower and amusement park with a quaint charm, Igeldo is the starting point of numerous excursions along the Cantabrian coast.

In the early 20th century, Ulia was converted into a healthful recreational park for Donostia’s residents with restaurants, leisure facilities and a tram which climbed to the top of the mount. Today, Ulia retains its wild beauty and many of the signs of identity of its past as a “Belle Époque” park and also a vantage point for whale spotting. By exploring its woods and footpaths by the sea we can discover these and other secrets.

6. Island of Santa Clara Set in the heart of the bay and protecting La Concha and Ondarreta beaches from the buffeting of the sea, Santa Clara Island is perhaps the most emblematic feature of San Sebastian’s landscape. Although accessible all year round –it has

a small beach and landing stage– by private boat, in summer there is a passenger service to the island several times a day from San Sebastian harbour. The island is a fantastic option for spending a different and relaxing day.

Although a fair distance from the city, Artikutza is San Sebastian’s greenest lung. The estate was acquired by the City Council in the early 20th century and has a leafy wood of beeches, pines and oaks that is a riot of colour. There is also a programme of guided tours to take you around this site –which has one of the highest rainfall levels in Spain, hence its greenness– and show you its features in detail. 39

here are two mountains dominating the eastern coast of San Sebastian: Ulia –visible from the Zurriola Beach– and Jaizkibel, dying near the town of Hondarribia. The first one will accompany us in our way to Pasai San Pedro, a town with paved small streets and seafaring tradition, where we will take a boat to get to the neighbouring town of Pasai Donibane. Crossed by just one small street and dotted with alleys, this town has an interesting range of restaurants specialised in sea dishes and a shipyard for traditional Basque boats, the Ontziola. From there, we will get near the historic quarters preserved in industrial places like Lezo or Errenteria, before getting deeper into the town of Oiartzun and its surroundings. Built on an incline alongside the N-1, this traditional rural municipality serves as a startingpoint for going on a megalithic monument trail or cycling to the Roman Mines at the Arditurri Group of Mines. From now, Mount Jaizkibel will accompany us to Irun –an important Roman settlement, as

shown in the Oiasso Romanisation Museum– and Hondarribia, the last beach in Gipuzkoa. The old town, founded eight centuries ago, is stuffed with small palaces, manor buildings, and blazoned coats of arms. The Nagusia Street will lead us to the Armas Square, dominated by the solid walled castle of Charles V. The medieval atmosphere of its highest part, walled and crossed by sloping small streets, contrasts with the fishing and colourful character of the lowest quarter, the quarter of La Marina. On the other side of the frontier, we find Hendaye, a pleasant summer town in Southern France, famous for its beaches, summer houses, and for the Château d’Abbadie. The enchanting San Juan de Luz rests some kilometres to the North; a place that was formerly related to whale hunting and that now has a smart historical centre and a church, the church of San Juan Bautista, in which Luis XIV got married. In the coast too, we will get to Biarritz, the tourist destination for many high society personalities.

Less than 2 hours from San Sebastian. The city can also serve as a base from which to explore Gipuzkoa and its surroundings in depth. Whether you head east, west or south, the region’s charms soon appear in the form of fishing villages, rustic houses lost in the mountains and areas steeped in rural traditions, along with those rich in art and wine.

From beach to beach, from port to port Western Route

big part of the territory’s summer splendour opens out on the West part of Gipuzkoa. There we will find the most famous beaches. We leave San Sebastian through the N-634 road, going past Orio to get to Zarautz, the first coastal pearl. Already in the 19th century, this town seemed promising for tourism thanks to its wide and comfortable beach. At present, it is the venue of international surfing competitions and has a golf course, although the town has never faced away from its monumental side, its towerhouses, churches, and charming squares, like La Música Square. The next stop is Getaria, famous for its mouse-shaped peninsula, as the town where navigator Juan Sebastian Elcano was born, and for having some of The Basque Country’s finest grilled fish restaurants. Any tour of the village must go through the old town, the port, with its remains of old ramparts and the museum of designer Cristóbal Balenciaga, a native of Getaria. The neighbouring Zumaia is a town with a very

singular physiognomy: it is beached in the mouth of River Urola, besieged by beaches, and its Parish of San Pedro looks like as a fortress. The nearby cliffs known as Flysch, in Itzurun, are like an open book revealing the Earth’s secrets. The road to Deba stands out due to its slopes and bends, but it is worth it just to see the summerhouses, the smart beach, or the Church of Santa María, with a valuable Gothic façade and an amazing cloister. In the surroundings. Nearby is the rural neighbourhood of Itziar and an area of limestone within which is one of the most important examples of cave art from the Magdalenian age, Ekain Cave, in Zestoa. The

replica of the cave, which one can visit, is called “Ekainberri”. Mutriku is the last stronghold of Gipuzkoa before entering into Biscay. This purely medieval place has a dizzy layout and the houses throng around an amphitheatre with views over the sea. The endless civil monuments of its corners show its unmistakable seafaring tradition: the manor houses, the tower-houses such as Berriatua, or the port docks, the finishing touch of the route.

From its 1,340 metres, Mount Txindoki dominates the Goierri Valley.

W

e travel to the territory’s interior, to the highest landscapes and villages in Gipuzkoa, separated from San Sebastian by thirty kilometres. The Oria Valley has traditionally been the main communication axis between the North and the South; that is the reason why the N-1 road is our particular guide in this journey. We do not need to drive a lot to get to Tolosa, a highly noble town that, in the 19th century, was the capital town of Gipuzkoa during ten years. Before that time, it had already shown enough signs of its importance: the Baroque palaces (Idiáquez, Atodo…), the Gothic church of Santa María, or the precious arcaded structure of El Tinglado Market, on the banks of the Oria River. It would be an excellent idea to visit Tolosa on a Saturday morning, when we can enjoy the busy and colourful public market. If you want to experience the same feeling in Ordizia, you should visit this town on a Wednesday: its Wednesday market has been held for five centuries in the heart of the old town, which has been declared an Historical-Artistic Site. Here you can visit the Goierri Interpretation Centre and the D´elikatuz Centre, to have a better understanding of the region and traditional Basque cuisine. The palaces of Barrena and Zabala or the streets through which Fray Andrés de Urdaneta, a 16th century seafarer, will say goodbye to us before leaving to Beasain. Now we are on the epicentre of the Goerri region, under the influence of magic Aralar Mountain Range and with the reference of the

sharp summit of Mount Txindoki. The Igartza Site is the biggest monumental treasure in this place and the perfect key to travel to medieval Gipuzkoa, whether crossing the 12th century bridge, observing the mill working, visiting the press, or enjoying the stone and wood structure of the Igartza Palace. Close to, in Ataun, Barandiaran Museum has opened, the Basque mythology museum. We will get to Idiazabal, famous for the cheese –an Interpretation Centre explains the making process–, and we will drive to Segura through the GI-2637 road. The roots of this town are in the 13th century, the birth of one of the most graceful and beautiful villages in the territory. In Segura, we can visit the Medieval Interpretation Centre. The small palaces (Lardizabal, Guevara, Ardixarra…) and the narrow streets are unique in Gipuzkoa, as well as the nearby Zerain Cultural Park. This town has been always related to iron ore mining and other activities closely linked to “Ama Lur”, (Mother Earth). We can also visit the Iron Mountain. Going through Mutiloa, we get to Ormaiztegi, where we can visit the Zumalakarregi Museum. Located in the building in which the Carlist general Tomas Zumalacarregui was born, the museum reviews the life of this famous personality, as well as the 19th century Basque Country. In the town of Zegama, is “Aizkorriko Ataria” National Park from which we can climb to the highest peak of the Basque Country.

Santa María Cathedral

What is also known as the Old Cathedral stands in VitoriaGasteiz, on one end of the medieval “almond,” named for its shape, similar to the nut. It is the only Gothic church of its kind in The Basque Country and for more than ten years has been undergoing a complex restoration process. But this has not kept the cathedral from remaining “open due to work” so locals and visitors alike can learn about the foundations of a Gothic cathedral and the curves of its vault work. Built in the High Middle Ages on the foundations of a Romanesque church, the Old Cathedral had structural problems almost since its construction. Its restoration did not go unnoticed by popular novelist Ken Follett, who spent time at the site in order to write the sequel to his hit The Pillars of the Earth. La Rioja Alavesa

The landscapes of The Alavese Rioja, a province belonging to The Basque Country, have a personality all their own, totally different from the rest of The Basque Country. Here there are neither forests nor green meadows - only endless rows of plants making up a veritable sea of vineyards. The area between the Sierra de Cantabria and the River Ebro is a kind of

wine kingdom. One hundred wineries, some centuries old, others designed by renowned architects such as Santiago Calatrava, are firmly dedicated to this activity. Most of them open up their facilities to show them to the public, as well as for tasting and shopping. The Alavese Rioja is dotted with towns of undeniable historical charm, such as Laguardia, Elciego and Labastida, natural areas, such as the lagoons of Laguardia, and archaeological sites such as La Hoya.

Bilbao’s Guggenheim Museum

On the banks of the River Nervión in Bilbao stands the Guggenheim Museum, an architectural colossus coated in titanium plates which fifteen years ago served to mark a renaissance in the Biscayan capital. The building was designed by Frank O. Gehry and houses a permanent collection of international contemporary art, rounded out by various temporary exhibitions throughout the year. The museum and its surroundings also serve as models of urban renewal thanks to new spaces created for large-scale artwork (such as Jeff Koons’ Puppy flower sculpture and Louise Bourgeois’ giant spider Maman) which Bilbaoans have embraced as icons of the new city.

MICHELIN STARS

According to the prestigious Michelin Guide: In San Sebastian there are three restaurants with the very highest rating: three stars. Arzak, Akelarre and Martín Berasategui. These are joined by two-star Mugaritz, and by star winners Miramón, Arbelaitz, Kokotxa, Mirador de Ulia, Alameda and Zuberoa. All in all, sixteen stars in just one place. Juan Mari Arzak, Pedro Subijana and Martin Berasategui, among others, have brought San Sebastian’s cuisine to the very top. PINTXOS, THE PLEASURE OF THE SMALL

It started out as a simple and tasty way to kill time before sitting down at the table for lunch or dinner. This custom was called “going out for pintxos” and, over time, it evolved and grew more sophisticated until today it represents a culinary hallmark not only of San Sebastian, but of all The Basque Country. From the potato omelette and the traditional gilda - a spicy appetizer of chilli pepper, anchovy and olive that was born as a tribute to Rita Hayworth things graduated to more complex and succulent recipes, resulting in what has been

To a large extent our cuisine’s success stems from the use of seasonal products, which highlight the excellence of our raw materials. The best way to experience them is to visit one of the traditional food markets like that of San Martín or La Bretxa, where the city’s top chefs show up daily in order to personally select the meat and fish they will serve at their restaurants. It is there where the tradition of home-grown orchard products sold by small merchants is kept alive. CIDER

Among the different food and beverage attractions in and around our city are its sidrerías, or cider houses: restaurants normally located in traditional farm buildings and offering, based around cider, the chance to enjoy typical menus with cod dishes and ox steaks as the staples, all while soaking up the unique atmosphere. A good way to experience the culture of cider and the cider houses in San Sebastian and its surroundings is to start by visiting the cider museum, Sagardoetxea, located in Astigarraga. TXAKOLI

For decades it was considered a local wine, but it has become one of the great exponents of Gipuzkoan cuisine under the official Getariako Txakolina label. Txakoli is a white wine, young and fruity, ideal to accompany salted anchovies and tuna in oil. Aia, Zarautz and Getaria are the Gipuzkoan towns producing the most txakoli, and a tour of the three sites will reveal to visitors all the secrets of its excellent and painstaking process of elaboration. 49
