Dear Colleagues

Exclusi African ve partner of Uti for 13 ylity Week ears

It is with great pleasure that I invite you to Cape Town in May 2013 for the annual African Utility Week conference and exhibition. African Utility Week, which has been running for 13 years, is the premier power and water utility event in Africa, bringing together more than 5 000 people from across the continent to deliberate on the future of the utility sector. With a combination of presentations, discussion panels and networking opportunities, African Utility Week enables utility professionals to share experiences with their peers, discuss technological solutions with their suppliers and learn from the various speakers, presenters and panellists as to the best practices available both in Africa and across the world.

Keynote speaker

Eskom has, for the past 13 years, enjoyed a relationship with African Utility Week and my hope is that you will find this event a productive use of your time out of the office, that the sessions will provide the answers to some of the challenges you are facing on a daily basis and that the technology on offer will enable you to do your job with more efficiency. Please remember to book your seat early, as space is limited. I look forward to seeing you in Cape Town in May 2013. Sincerely

Advisory Board and Brand Ambassadors

Meet our 4 0a board mem dvisory bers

The key to an excellent conference programme is the advisory board. Our 2013 brand ambassadors and conference committee brings an amazing amount of knowledge, experience and insight that has helped to develop this year’s excellent African Utility Week programme. These individuals will play key roles in moderating and leading sessions, workshops and roundtables. They have also advised the management team on the latest industry trends, challenges and discussion issues, thus creating an event developed by the sector and for the sector.

“African Utility Week is the major event in Africa where issues concerning utilities are discussed. My company has benefited immensely from the speakers’ knowledge and the study tours. All utilities in Africa face similar challenges. African Utility Week is therefore highly recommended to share ideas and experiences.” Alexander Osei, Divisional Manager: MIS, Electricity Company of Ghana, Ghana

“I have chosen to be part of African Utility Week because it help me to understand what is going on in the African power sector and which technologies are being considered by various countries. I can learn how much generation has been added to the African grid and how countries deal with funding challenges they face.” Lawrence Musaba, Co-ordination Centre Manager, SAPP Southern African Power Pool, Zimbabwe

“Defining the conference programme by consulting and collaborating with industry experts is the most effective way to bring the right content to the delegates. African Utility Week works with ‘Specialist Industry Advisors’ across the different business sectors in order to develop an excellent programme.” Essop Basha, Utility Sustainability Manager, Growthpoint Properties, South Africa

“After being involved in African Utility Week for over a decade, I still find it to be extremely useful to gain knowledge about the power industry in Africa and keeping up to speed with the latest projects and developments. Furthermore, the networking at African Utility Week is just as valuable as the content of the presentations.” Malcolm Fawkes, Senior Manager: Eskom Academy of Learning, Eskom, South Africa

“African Utility Week grows every year providing a good balance with attendees from government, parastatals and private sector. The content is always relevant and the exhibition provides me with access to a myriad of solution providers. African Utility Week is my annual check-in with friends and colleagues in the power sector.” Zelda Weitz, Business Development Manager, Symbion Power, United States

“Africa Utility Week is one of the preeminent infrastructure industry meetings on the continent. For utilities, private investors and financiers, this is a must-attend meeting offering unrivalled access to industry news and behind-the-scenes discussions with decision makers.” Dr. Jan Martin Witte, Senior Project Manager Division Energy and Environment, KfW Development Bank, Germany

Closing session

Wednesday 15 May 2013 Closing session Session 2.0.1 > 14:00 – 15:00 14:00 Combating vandalism in utilities Benson Muriithi, Chief Manager, Distribution, Kenya Power, Kenya 14:30 Maintenance as a utility imperative Deon Louw, Overstrand Municipality, South Africa 15:00 Closing remarks

Why you should attend the closing session If you didn’t have the chance to attend all the sessions you needed to, this is the ideal way to find out what was discussed, what the key points for development were and what the challenges are that are facing the various power divisions across Africa. This is the starting point of reform and change – key items will be chosen for feedback in 2014, and this is your opportunity to monitor change within the sector.

Closing session featured speakers Benson Muriithi, Chief Manager, Distribution, Kenya Power, Kenya

Deon Louw, Deputy Director of electro-technical services, Overstrand Municipality, Western Cape, South Africa

Battling with vandalism and theft has given Engineer Benson Muiriithi, Chief Manager, Distribution of The Kenya Power & Lighting Company Ltd, the exceptional experience of combating transformer oil theft, theft of distribution transformers and transmission infrastructure.

Maintenance a headache for you? Battling to develop a maintenance mind-set within your utility or municipality? Deon’s many years of experience within the South African municipal environment has given him extensive insights into the need for continued maintenance as an imperative within the power sector.
