Mowers and Mower Conditioners

We’re behind you with cutting-

edge performance.

Welcome to our Mowers and Mower Conditioner Brochure. Whether you harvest a crop twice a year or six times during the season, there’s always something comforting about the smell of a fresh-cut field. Unfortunately, the tranquility associated with the sights and smells of nature can be quickly shattered by a machine that plugs or breaks down in the middle of harvest. That’s why Massey Ferguson® goes to such great lengths to ensure that every Hesston Series MF1300 disc mower and MF1300 or MF1400 mower conditioner features smooth cutting and unmatched reliability.

Quality steeped in experience.

When it comes to equipment quality, you don’t have to rely on our word alone. In fact, Hesston invented many of the innovations at work in the hay and forage industry today. That includes the first pull-type mower conditioner; the first center-pivot mower conditioner; the first centerpivot disc mower conditioner, the first use of dual augers in a sickle header … the list goes on and on. Of course, if you add in Massey Ferguson’s experience with mowing equipment, which goes back to the 1860s when Massey was selling mowers and reapers, our experience is even more far reaching. Today, Massey Ferguson offers a full line of Hesston Series disc mowers, as well as both disc and sickle-type mower conditioners to match the needs of virtually every farm and cropping program in North America.

Sir Francis Bacon, an English author and philosopher (1561-1626) once said, “By far the best proof is experience.” And our mowers and mower conditioners are backed by decades of experience.

Nothing stands in their way. When gopher mounds, thick grass and tangled vegetation call for aggressive action, it’s time to look at a Massey Ferguson disc mower or disc mower conditioner. Thanks to their low-profile rotary disc cutterbar, MF1300 Hesston Series models glide through rank hay crops and roadside weeds just as easily as they do through lush alfalfa. Choose from five disc mower models with cutting widths from 5’ 6” to 10’ 4” (1.7 to 3.1 m) and power requirements of 30 to 50 PTO horsepower (22-37 kW). Or select the MF1359 pull-type disc mower conditioner, which combines a 9’ 3” (2.8 m) cutting width with a pair of TiCor™ conditioning rolls for all-in-one hay harvesting

Low maintenance, high reliability

The Model 1359 disc mower conditioner and all five 1300 Series disc mower models feature a modular disc cutterbar that truly exemplifies reduced maintenance and maximum reliability. Each rotary disc is powered by a self-contained module driven by a segmented hex shaft and pinion gears. In addition, the vertical shaft in the disc hub incorporates a shear point that serves as a last level of defense. Should repair or replacement ever become necessary, the modular design allows individual removal and quick servicing of any unit — without disassembly of the whole bar! Finally, each cutterbar module glides over the ground on a replaceable skid shoe that protects the cutterbed from wear, yet allows it to follow the contour of the field.

Individual module lubrication

You don’t have to worry about “starving” the cutterbar gears of lubricant when cutting steep slopes, either. Since each module contains its own grease reservoir, you can rest easy, no matter how steep the slope. Grease is not going to run to the downhill side of the bar, as it can with some oil-bath cutterbars. That also means there’s no need to check fluid levels daily; and there’s less chance of contamination from dirt and foreign material. Standard knives feature a 12-degree pitch. For tough conditions such as down crop, 18-degree knives are also available for more lift and a cleaner cut.

Solid 1300 disc mower features

When your needs call for a versatile, yet inexpensive disc mower conditioner, you can’t do better than the Massey Ferguson Model 1359. Utilizing the same cutterbar design as the 1300 Series disc mowers, its seven rotary discs cut a 9’ 3” (2.8 m) swath through grass hay, pasture or alfalfa with equal ease. Add our proven TiCor conditioner and a rugged side-pull hitch that easily folds for transport and you have an excellent machine for any small to midsize operation.

A heavy-duty, one-piece box-beam hitch design on each model is capable of attaching to a quick hitch. The 1326 and 1327 offer a category 1 and 2 three-point hitch to fit both smaller and larger model tractors, while the 1328, 1329 and 1330 models feature a category 2 three-point hitch for larger tractors.

Our spring-loaded breakaway design allows the cutterbar to release and swing back if it were to encounter a solid obstruction, such as a post or stump.

A heavy-duty banded V-belt provides the smooth, quiet transfer of power from the 540 rpm PTO shaft to the cutterbar gearcase. Hydraulic transport fold, which includes a lock valve that secures the cutterbar in the raised position, is standard on all models. Adjustable flotation springs support the cutterbar through a variety of field conditions for increased cutting efficiency and reduced drag and wear on the skid shoes.

Plugs at the conditioner rolls are easily removed without leaving the tractor seat, thanks to a hydraulic powerout feature that opens the conditioning rolls to expel slugs or debris as the header is raised.

Disc Mowers/Sid-Pull Disc Mower Conditioner

Variable conditions call for a versatile mower conditioner

Whether your disc mower needs call for a 4-, 5-, 6-, 7- or 8-disc model, you can be assured of rugged construction and maximum adaptability.

PAGE 5

Each heat-treated rotary disc incorporates two free-swinging, reversible knives that slice through vegetation at a maximum tip speed of up to 176 mph (283 kph).

Self-propelled performance at a pull-type price. Compromise is a thing of the past with a Massey Ferguson 1400 Hesston Series sickle mower conditioner. Thanks to their over-the-top, box-frame design, MF1400 Series models carry the header in much the same manner as a self-propelled machine, pushing it through the field for better groundhugging flotation and higher windrow clearance. It’s a concept that was introduced by Hesston in 1974 and advanced by Massey Ferguson in three unique models today. In effect, you get the same cutting performance and hay quality as you’d expect from our self-propelled windrowers at a pulltype price.

Two highly-maneuverable center-pivot sickle models.

For those who need big-acreage performance combined with side-to-side maneuverability, Massey Ferguson offers two center-pivot sickle mower conditioners in the Hesston Series Model 1474 and 1476. With cutting widths of 14 and 16 feet (4.3 and 4.8 m) respectively, these versatile models feature a reliable half-swaybar sickle drive that cycles the dual sickles at a rapid 1820 strokes per minute. Other standard features include our innovative dual auger system, 110inch (2.79 m) wide conditioner rolls for more even crop feeding and adjustable sickle guard angle to match field and crop conditions.

A pair of 9-inch, counterrotating augers on the Models 1474 and 1476 distribute the crop across the full width of the conditioner in a “butt end” configuration, ensuring uniform conditioning and even crop distribution in light and heavy crops alike.

Consider, for example, the rapid 1,700-strokes-per-minute cutting speed. Bolt-on sickle sections, which allow quick replacement, are also standard. And for thicker, hard-to-cut crops, the 1459 is even available with stub-on-stub guards as a factory-installed option. Other value-added features include 9.5L-14 flotation tires; a four-bat reel that can be converted to five or six bats; standard, adjustable skid shoes, and a choice of intermeshing rubber-onsteel or machine-cut rubber-on-rubber conditioner rolls.

With cycles as rapid as 1,820 strokes per minute, the dual sickles get the job done fast and efficiently.

The keys to performance and reliability.

Five-bat reels on the 1474 and 1476 take smaller “bites” for smoother feeding and less bunching at the conditioner rolls.

Wedge-lock reel tine tube bearings improve durability on all models.

A standard deluxe reel on the Model 1476 includes sealed tine tube bearings and tine tubes that can be split between spiders for less downtime and greater productivity.

A slip clutch on each auger reduces the risk of damage while center supports on both augers reduce vibration and wear.

An adjustable cam track lets you match the tine release point to a wide range of crop conditions with only minor adjustment.

An optional header reverser on the 1474 and 1476 allows the operator to back large objects or slugs out of the header without leaving the seat.

Bolt-on sickle sections, which allow quick replacement, are standard on all models.

An enclosed, oil-bath conditioner drive system helps ensure a long, trouble-free service life, providing more value for your investment.

Center-Pivot Sickle Mower Conditioners

Despite its 9’ 3” (2.8 m) cutting width, the Massey Ferguson Model 1459 sickle mower conditioner is big on features that preserve hay quality and improve productivity.

PAGE 7

The best value in the industry.

Disc mower speed meets center-pivot maneuverability. Slice through tough, tangled crops at speeds that can only be attained with a rotary disc machine … and capacity that only an MF Hesston Series center-pivot model can provide. Choose the Model 1372 with its 12-foot (3.6 m) cutting width, or step up to the Model 1375 with its 15foot, 3-inch (4.6 m) cutterbed. Both models feature a constant-velocity, mechanical driveline coupled with a hydraulically actuated swing tongue and your choice of a 3-point or drawbar-mounted swivel hitch. Either way, PTO power is smoothly transmitted through two swivel gearboxes positioned at right angles on the hitch. However, unlike other swivel hitch systems, Massey Ferguson machines support the tongue weight through the hitch, rather than through the gearboxes. The result is fast cutting, turn-on-a-dime maneuverability and exceptional reliability.

Pre-lubricated sealed bearings on all gears provide a longer life while substantially reducing maintenance compared to cutterbeds that require regular oil checks.

Center-Pivot Disc Mower Conditioners

A turbulence reduction roll, located between the conditioner rolls and the cutterbed, allows the conditioner rolls to be positioned farther back, improving performance in light crops.

PAGE 9

All three models feature one-lever swath shield adjustment, as well as direct drive conditioning for accurate timing and reduced maintenance.

MF Model 1372 and 1375 disc mower conditioners feature a gear-to-gear cutterbed that allows each gear assembly and adjacent idler gear to be individually removed through the top of the cutterbar without splitting the bar. The cutterbed is also set into a “cradle” that protects it from the twisting or flexing associated with rolling terrain.

Performance features are standard. No matter which Massey Ferguson Hesston Series mower conditioner you choose, you can be assured of quality performance, thanks to impressive features you won’t find on a number of competitive machines.

Three-Point Header Suspension A rugged box-beam frame supports a floating, three-point header suspension system for greater ground clearance and unsurpassed vertical and radial flotation. That translates into better response to field contours and less scalping.

Direct-Drive Conditioner Rolls The conditioning rolls are powered by individual roll drive shafts and an oil-lubricated drive system. Both ensure accurate roll timing and reduce roll drive maintenance.

Swath Or Windrow The choice is yours, thanks to an easily adjustable swath shield. Drop the shield down to spread the crop on the ground for faster drying, or raise it to direct crop flow to the fluffing and forming shields.

Extra-Wide Conditioner Rolls The mower conditioner rolls are 110 inches (2.79 m) wide (84 inches/2.13 m on the 1359) for a reason. The extra width not only increases the capacity of the header, but allows the crop to be distributed into a thinner mat for more uniform conditioning.

Adjustable Flotation Springs Field adjustments are quick and easy, so you always maintain a quality cut without scalping the field or dragging the header.

Spring-Tensioned Over-Center Cam All models (except Model 1359) utilize a unique linkage on the conditioner that allows the rolls to temporarily separate, eject a slug, then reset automatically — saving you valuable time at harvest and dramatically reducing stress and frustration.

Conditioner options to match every need. Take your choice of conditioner options on several models to meet your specific crop and operating conditions. Regardless of the type, the extra-wide width ensures thorough, uniform conditioning that helps increase the total value of the crop.

Rubber-On-Steel Rolls Available on the Models 1372 and 1474, the rubber-on-steel conditioner rolls are fully engaged to crimp plant stems along their entire length so stems dry at the same speed as the leaves.

Steel-On-Steel Rolls Designed to meet the needs of custom and commercial operators, steel-on-steel rolls feature a herringbone pattern that provides long-lasting durability while evenly distributing crop material across the full width of the rolls.

Spoke Conditioner Available on the Model 1372 disc model only, the spoke conditioner uses a total of 74 free-swinging spokes, spinning at 1,030 rpm, to effectively condition the crop and force it to rub against the conditioning panel. This, in turn, scuffs the waxy coating from the plant stems, allowing them to dry faster.

TiCor™ Rolls Constructed from reinforced rubber tire cores that have been staked, compressed and machined on the roll shafts, TiCor™ rolls absorb shocks from rocks and foreign objects with less damage than other roll materials.Yet, their shallow-lugged, intermeshing spiral design provides gentle conditioning that crimps stems without damaging leaves. A set of 2-inch topping skids provides additional ground clearance when cutting in rough and rocky conditions and when you want to leave more stubble to protect new growth.

An optional tall crop divider, designed to cleanly divide the crop, helps eliminate the wrapping or plugging problems often associated with extremely tall and tangled crops.

An offset hitch, which moves the mower over 12 inches, allows the use of larger tires or a wider wheel spacing without running over the uncut crop.
