4.5.13.1 Latency due to video processing on DMD-chip The DMD (digital mirror device) from TI, needs to store a complete frame before it can start building up the image. This takes already 16.6 ms in case of a 60 Hz source. Once all video content is known it starts building-up different grey scales with several intermediate bit planes.

First response on a white square is shown below: (typically on frame delay)

Bit planes are different on real life images

Conclusion: A DMD has a fixed frame delay to store the complete image in memory and needs about one additional frame to generate all intermediate bit-planes for all grey levels. => 33.2 ms in case of a 60 Hz PC source.

4.5.13.2 Latency due to Warping image processing When the Galaxy NW-7/12 EX is projecting on curved screens, the warping function is activated in order to compensate for the geometric distortion caused by projecting on the screen. In practice, this warping algorithm is making a pre-distortion on the image that is the inverse of the distortion caused by the curved screen so as to obtain a non distorted projected image.

Curved Screen

Inside projector

Image before Warping

Image after Warping

The Warping distortion on the DMD inside the projector is e.g. as follows:

Inside projector

Lines

In this case this warping electronics is introducing frame delay as information on last projected lines are a combinations of several inputted source lines. So in order to project a certain line, the warping electronics has to wait until al the related input source lines have been received before it can send out and project the right image line. The amount of frame delay generated is then: t =(Frame time)*( Lines/total amount of lines)

Conclusion: In case of enabled smearing reduction, you still need one frame to memorize the video content however the bit plane generation is twice as fast. => 24.9 ms (16.6 + 8.3) in case of a 60 Hz source

Note: Initial light output is reduced by 50% when enabling smearing reduction.

4.5.13.4 Latency Conclusion The total frame delay inside the Galaxy NW-7/12 EX projector from input of the IG signal to the projected image on the screen is typically 33.2 ms (with all grayscale information visible) in situation without warping or with warping case 1.

The total frame delay inside the projector from input of the IG signal to the projected image on the screen is typically 33.2 ms+ t [=(Frame time)*( Lines/total amount of lines)] (with all grayscale information visible) in applications with case 2 warping.

In case smearing reduction enabled, this total frame delay becomes 24.9 ms + t [=(Frame time)*( Lines/total amount of lines)] (with all grayscale information visible) in applications with case 2 warping.

4.5.14 Available Tuning Functionality 4.5.14.1 Warp functionality The WARP functionality is available in the projection system. This WARP functionality works on a 33 by nd 33 adjustment point raster and the geometry accuracy of this WARP function is 1/32 of a pixel on the raster adjustment points.

4.5.14.2 Gamma Adjustment The projector accepts and properly decodes video inputs using gamma values from 1.0 to 3.2 in steps of 0.2.

4.5.14.3 Alpha and Beta planes The Alpha and Beta planes tuning capability allows for a pixel by pixel red, green, blue, and black level adjustment over the entire system. This function works in such a way that a compensating bit map can be sent to each individual channel within the pixel by pixel compensation array. The full black and white levels of each channel are than adjusted accordingly in order to obtain a uniform black and white level over the entire system.

4.5.14.4 DynaColor DynaColor is an electronic tuning functionality that will minimize channel to channel color variations. This function transforms the color space of each projector to a common color space of all projectors in a system, thereby transforming the primary colors (R,G,B) of each channel to the common targeted primary colors (R,G,B). After measurement of the individual primary colors of each channel, the common color space across the multi-channel system is determined and the primary colors of the individual channels are adjusted to the common primary colors through real time matrix calculations in the color space inside the projector. The result is a very good match between the recalculated primary colors of the individual channels and a very uniform overall impression of the multi-channel system.

4.5.14.5 Constant Light Output (CLO) CLO allows constant light output of the projector regardless of lamp aging. The projector is equipped with a brightness sensing system that monitors lamp output and corrects for variations. The system acts on the lamp power supply. You can dim a lamp to maximum 60% of its initial light output.

4.5.14.6 Smearing Reduction Option The smearing reduction (called TMR in menu) improves the sharpness of fast moving objects. The projector runs at double frame rate (120 Hz) at which the second frame is blanked. This option is typically used in simulation applications. Due to the black frame insertion, the light output is reduced by half.

4.5.16 Stereo capabilities 4.5.16.1 Active stereo A single Galaxy NW-7/12 EX can show 3-D images by running in active stereo mode. A left and right image are shown sequentially at a frame rate between 96 and 120 Hz. The viewer can distinct the left from right image by wearing active shutter glasses. These glasses are synchronized by means of an external Infra Red emitter. The LCD glass in front of the left eye is open at the time the left image is show and closed during the right content. The remaining light output for a single eye using active stereo is about 16% of the initial light output.

4.5.16.2 Optional active Infitec Excellence The new Active Infitec Excellence allows a user to see 3-D images made by a single projector and wearing special passive glasses. Compared to active stereo shutter glasses, these Infitec glasses don’t need batteries nor emitters to be synchronized with the source. Additionally, it can be used on any surface no special treatment required. The remaining light output for a single eye using active Infitec is 15% without dynacolor usage or 10% after full color correction which is a 40% increase compared to previous Infitec filters.

The native color triangle has been significantly increased (see figure above) and L/R eye stereo separation has been significantly improved to less than 0.5%
