BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE

Creator:

Mogg, Myra Lord, Nina Evelyn

Myra and Nina Evelyn Mogg were the daughters of Mr and Mrs M. M. Mogg of Loch Leven, Mudgee. Both were award-winning knitters in the 1930s. Myra was born on 20 September 1906 and died on 21 June 1967. Her knitted garments won awards in the annual shows of agricultural societies and branches of the Country Women's Association in the central west of New South Wales and she was often sought as a knitting judge. She was also successful in knitting competitions run by retailers and newspapers. Her jumper which won first prize in the Sun Woolcraft Contest (Sun News-Pictorial, Melbourne) in 1939 is in the Museum's collection. Myra was employed in a Mudgee office and walked the seven kilometres to and from the farm to town each day, apparently knitting as she went along. She designed and made her own clothes, often ensembles consisting of tunic, gloves and shoes. Myra would have shoes made to her size and design by shoe manufacturers McNaughts (a cousin worked there), and would then apply her own decoration. Myra also sang, drew, painted and was a keen gardener. Myra's elder sister, Nina, was also a champion knitter, entering in competitions organised by retailers, newspapers and agricultural societies. In 1934 she won first prize for a woman's hand-knitted jumper in 2-ply wool in the Empire Knitting Competition organised by the Women's Centenary Council, Melbourne. The judges thought that the hem of the jumper was machine knitted. She explained to them 'stitch by stitch' how the hem was knitted and won the category. Nina married Albert John Lord, of Mudgee. She later married Mr Falconer.
