The Religious Education Program will be open from 9:30AM to 2:30PM and Monday through Wednesday nights from 6PM to 8:30PM. Please call 429-8824 for more information. Registration for next year has started. Please make sure to go to our religious education office for more information. Thank you to the First Communion team of teachers: Maria Canjura, Beatrice Civil, Roseanna D’Antonio, Lidia Leon, Luis Paul, Ana Pena, Yomaris Perez, Veronica Reyes-Brito, Mary Sheely, Santi Valentin, Donna Wargo, and Peggy Zugibe who prepared our children for this wonderful sacrament. Our Communion coordinator Mrs. Gail Piscitelli prepared a class, as well as coordinated the practiced. We had 119 students who received their first Communion in the last two weeks. The year will soon be coming to an end. Please make sure all sacramental forms, baptismal certificates and fees are taken care of before next year. We really do appreciate your cooperation. Your cooperation helps the parish program run smoother and more efficiently. Please make corrections on your calendar. I wrote the wrong date down for our family Service Day. It is actually on Saturday, May rd st 23 not 21 . We hope you can still come and help us on this day. MOTHER’S DAY NOVENA

Nuestra Novena del Día de las Madres comienza hoy. Nosotros, Sacerdotes, Diáconos y el personal de la Parroquia San Pedro, nos unimos en ofrecer nuestras oraciones y nuestros mejores deseos para todas las madres de nuestra parroquia, en este día especial en su honor. Our Mothers’ Day Novena begins today. We-priests, deacons and staff of St. Peter’s, join in offering our prayers and best wishes for all the mothers of our parish on this special day in their honor. We join, as well, in our prayers for all the deceased mothers of our parish that they enjoy the peace and joy of our eternal home in heaven. Our special novena for mothers will be for nine days. After the novena for the remainder of May living and deceased mothers will be prayed for at Masses offered here.

CEMETERY MASS

On Monday, May 25th, at 12:00PM we will offer Mass in our cemetery for all those who are buried there. Our cemetery is a reminder of God’s invitation to all of us to rest in peace with the saints in heaven. We join in prayer to ask God to deepen our faith in the divine gift of eternal life and to share that life forever with our beloved deceased. This year we invite our friends from St. Mary’s Church, with whom we are forming a new parish, to join with us in this Mass

PARISH PICNIC Our annual parish picnic will take place in four weeks on Sunday, June 14th, at Bowline Park. Tickets are available at $5 for individuals and $15 for a family. DIA DE CAMPO PARROQUIAL Nuestro Día de Campo Parroquial tomará lugar dentro de cuatro semanas, el domingo 14º de junio, en el Parque Bowline. POPE FRANCIS: GOD’S MERCY “It is proper to God to exercise mercy, and he manifests his omnipotence particularly in this way”.[5] Saint Thomas Aquinas’ words show that God’s mercy, rather than a sign of weakness, is the mark of his omnipotence. For this reason the liturgy, in one of its most ancient collects, has us pray: “O God, who reveal your power above all in your mercy and forgiveness …”[6] Throughout the history of humanity, God will always be the One who is present, close, provident, holy, and merciful. “Patient and merciful.” These words often go together in the Old Testament to describe God’s nature. His being merciful is concretely demonstrated in his many actions throughout the history of salvation where his goodness prevails over punishment and destruction. In a special way the Psalms bring to the fore the grandeur of his merciful action: “He forgives all your iniquity, he heals all your diseases, he redeems your life from the pit, he crowns you with steadfast love and mercy” (Ps 103:3-4). Another psalm, in an even more explicit way, attests to the concrete signs of his mercy: “He executes justice for the oppressed; he gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets the prisoners free; the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous. The Lord watches over the sojourners, he upholds the widow and the fatherless; but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin” (Ps 146:7-9). Here are some other expressions of the Psalmist: “He heals the brokenhearted, and binds up their wounds… The Lord lifts up the downtrodden, he casts the wicked to the ground” (Ps 147:3, 6). In short, the mercy of God is not an abstract idea, but a concrete reality with which he reveals his love as of that of a father or a mother, moved to the very depths out of love for their child. It is hardly an exaggeration to say that this is a “visceral” love. It gushes forth from the depths naturally, full of tenderness and compassion, indulgence and mercy. “For his mercy endures forever.” This is the refrain that repeats after each verse in Psalm 136 as it narrates the history of God’s revelation. By virtue of mercy, all the events of the Old Testament are replete with profound salvific import. Mercy renders God’s history with Israel a history of salvation. To repeat continually “for his mercy endures forever,” as the psalm does, seems to break through the dimensions of space and time, inserting everything into the eternal mystery of love. It is as if to say that not only in history, but for all eternity man will always be under the merciful gaze of the Father. It is no accident that the people of Israel wanted to include this psalm – the “Great Hallel,” as it is called – in its most important liturgical feast days. Before his Passion, Jesus prayed with this psalm of mercy. Matthew attests to this in his Gospel when he says that, “when they had sung a hymn” (26:30), Jesus and his disciples went out to the Mount of Olives. While he was instituting the Eucharist as an everlasting memorial of himself and his paschal sacrifice, he symbolically placed this supreme act of revelation in the light of his mercy. Within the very same context of mercy, Jesus entered upon his passion and death, conscious of the great mystery of love that he would consummate on the Cross. Knowing that Jesus himself prayed this psalm makes it even more important for us as Christians, challenging us to take up the refrain in our daily lives by praying these words of praise: “for his mercy endures forever.”

FIRST COMMUNION On the past two weekends 117 girls and boys in our Religious Education Program have received their First Communion. Over these weekends of Spring into Summer they will have the opportunity to receive their Second and Third Communion; their Tenth and Eleventh Communion. As wonderful as the reception of First Communion is for us, we believe that as we continue to receive this gift of Christ, His life continues to grow in us. Let us pray for our children, and ourselves, that we grow in Christ’s life as we receive the food that He died and rose to give us.

PAPA FRANCISCO: LA MISERICORDIA DE DIOS « Es propio de Dios usar misericordia y especialmente en esto se manifiesta su omnipotencia ».[5] Las palabras de santo Tomás de Aquino muestran cuánto la misericordia divina no sea en absoluto un signo de debilidad, sino más bien la cualidad de la omnipotencia de Dios. Es por esto que la liturgia, en una de las colectas más antiguas, invita a orar diciendo: « Oh Dios que revelas tu omnipotencia sobre todo en la misericordia y el perdón ».[6] Dios será siempre para la humanidad como Aquel que está presente, cercano, providente, santo y misericordioso. “Paciente y misericordioso” es el binomio que a menudo aparece en el Antiguo Testamento para describir la naturaleza de Dios. Su ser misericordioso se constata concretamente en tantas acciones de la historia de la salvación donde su bondad prevalece por encima del castigo y la destrucción. Los Salmos, en modo particular, destacan esta grandeza del proceder divino: « Él perdona todas tus culpas, y cura todas tus dolencias; rescata tu vida del sepulcro, te corona de gracia y de misericordia » (103,3-4). De una manera aún más explícita, otro Salmo testimonia los signos concretos de su misericordia: « Él Señor libera a los cautivos, abre los ojos de los ciegos y levanta al caído; el Señor protege a los extranjeros y sustenta al huérfano y a la viuda; el Señor ama a los justos y entorpece el camino de los malvados » (146,7-9). Por último, he aquí otras expresiones del salmista: « El Señor sana los corazones afligidos y les venda sus heridas. […] El Señor sostiene a los humildes y humilla a los malvados hasta el polvo » (147,3.6). Así pues, la misericordia de Dios no es una idea abstracta, sino una realidad concreta con la cual Él revela su amor, que es como el de un padre o una madre que se conmueven en lo más profundo de sus entrañas por el propio hijo. Vale decir que se trata realmente de un amor “visceral”. Proviene desde lo más íntimo como un sentimiento profundo, natural, hecho de ternura y compasión, de indulgencia y de perdón.“Eterna es su misericordia”: es el estribillo que acompaña cada verso del Salmo 136 mientras se narra la historia de la revelación de Dios. En razón de la misericordia, todas las vicisitudes del Antiguo Testamento están cargadas de un profundo valor salvífico. La misericordia hace de la historia de Dios con Israel una historia de salvación. Repetir continuamente “Eterna es su misericordia”, como lo hace el Salmo, parece un intento por romper el círculo del espacio y del tiempo para introducirlo todo en el misterio eterno del amor. Es como si se quisiera decir que no solo en la historia, sino por toda la eternidad el hombre estará siempre bajo la mirada misericordiosa del Padre. No es casual que el pueblo de Israel haya querido integrar este Salmo, el grande hallel como es conocido, en las fiestas litúrgicas más importantes. Antes de la Pasión Jesús oró con este Salmo de la misericordia. Lo atestigua el evangelista Mateo cuando dice que « después de haber cantado el himno » (26,30), Jesús con sus discípulos salieron hacia el Monte de los Olivos. Mientras instituía la Eucaristía, como memorial perenne de Él y de su Pascua, puso simbólicamente este acto supremo de la Revelación a la luz de la misericordia. En este mismo horizonte de la misericordia, Jesús vivió su pasión y muerte, consciente del gran misterio del amor de Dios que se habría de cumplir en la cruz. Saber que Jesús mismo hizo oración con este Salmo, lo hace para nosotros los cristianos aún más importante y nos compromete a incorporar este estribillo en nuestra oración de alabanza cotidiana: “Eterna es su misericordia”.

En estas semanas de la Primavera durante verano tendrán oportunidad de recibir su Segunda y Tercera Comunión; su décimo y undécima Comunión y es tan maravilloso para nosotros como la Primera Comunión, creemos que a medida que seguimos recibiendo este don de Cristo, Su vida sigue creciendo en nosotros.
