Iyad Malas

Chief Executive Officer Majid Al Futtaim Group

Artistically, considering the state of the economy, DUCTAC has done well over the last 12 months since our first ‘Season’ – the first multi-cultural trans-arts season ever held at a single venue in Dubai. Many new plays, shows and art exhibitions have been held, and the dance, music and arts courses have gone from strength to strength.

We at Majid Al Futtaim Group are proud to support DUCTAC in its endeavors to contribute to the development of art locally and regionally from Dubai, this city which is known to be a melting pot of cultures. We believe that the diversity in cultural movement reflects the healthy image of the society.

Financially, of course, it’s been tough. Private and government arts funding ‘fell off a cliff’ in 2009, and has only just started to show signs of recovery. Thanks to the hard work of the staff & board, and the huge and very welcome generosity of our patrons and supporters, we have pulled through, though not without some nail-biting moments! However, the future now looks much brighter, and we look forward to bringing you some excellent artistic experiences over the next year. And do contact the team if you’d like to become more involved with DUCTAC in any way. There are still plenty of seats in the Centrepoint Theatre without any names on them…

On behalf of Majid Al Futtaim Group, I would like to congratulate DUCTAC for their remarkable achievements in the past 4 years and wish the management and staff all the best for the future.

Since its inception in 2006, the Dubai Community Theatre and Arts Centre (DUCTAC) has been taking the right steps towards achieving its objectives. It continues to launch successful programs and initiatives that are designed to strengthen the cultural identity of Dubai. For the fourth consecutive year, the centre has been highlighting the importance of arts and culture for the development of this community. Our focus in the community will instill this strong sense of pride and responsibility in the minds of the younger generations. Congratulations and best wishes to the DUCTAC team.

Welcome to

DUCTAC SEASON 10/11 It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to DUCTAC SEASON 2010/11. This is the second SEASON to be launched by DUCTAC and, like its predecessor, brings together some of the finest theatrical and artistic productions, sourced both locally and internationally, within a single venue. 2009-2010 was a pivotal year for DUCTAC; not only did the varied line-up of our first SEASON receive critical praise but our achievements included the introduction of MinD and Spotlight Academy @ DUCTAC. MinD (Made in Dubai) provided a platform for the Emirate’s emerging local artistic talent to exhibit their work in new and unorthodox ways, while Spotlight Academy @ DUCTAC’s production of Hairspray gave budding stars the chance to perform alongside some of the UK’s leading theatrical professionals, including West End performers such as the Olivier Award-winning actress Leanne Jones.

Through our three headlining initiatives, SEASON, MinD and Spotlight Academy @ DUCTAC, as well as our year-round classes, performances, exhibitions and workshops, we will continue to provide entertainment, education and creative opportunities for the widest-possible crosssection of the community. Our aim is to not only continue with these initiatives but to create new ones in order to engage even more people and to appeal to an ever-wider proportion of the community. Indeed, we hope that in the near future SEASON will reach beyond DUCTAC and become a city-wide celebration of the arts. Hopefully, DUCTAC can play its part in showcasing the wealth of artistic talent present in the region and help to make Dubai a true cultural hub. This leaves me with just one final thank you to make: to you! Enjoy our SEASON 2010/11! Millie J. MESSAGE FROM General Manager

While we are hugely proud of our achievements over the last year, as a not-for-profit organization, the important work that we do for Dubai’s community would simply not be possible without the hard work and dedication of our staff and the full support of our patrons and board members. Our success could also not have been achieved without the cooperation of the Dubai Culture and Arts Authority, Mall of the Emirates, and the many promoters, cultural institutions, media partners, embassies and local arts practitioners who work with DUCTAC throughout the year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of them.

OPEN DAY Friday 5 NovEMBER 2010 Free Event

On 5 November, DUCTAC SEASON 2010/11 will kick off in style with our annual Open Day. Every year, we celebrate our birthday by throwing open the DUCTAC doors for a day packed with entertainment, activities and fun for all the family. Our Open Day is a chance for everyone to visit DUCTAC and get involved in a huge range of activities, watch live entertainment and demonstrations, and try out the wide range of art and performance classes that DUCTAC offers throughout the year. Ever thought about trying out dance, drama, painting, pottery or sculpture? Your choice may be made harder by our Open Day workshops, demonstrations and free trial classes! Besides this huge range of activities, live music, dance and drama performances will take place throughout the day. Children will also be spoilt for choice: kids’ mural painting sessions guided by professional artists, dance and drama workshops, kids’ painting and pottery trials, and storytelling sessions at the Old Library are just some of the fun activities on offer. Our art market in the Gallery of Light offers the chance to snap up some original art, crafts and jewellery created by local artists. Alternatively, you could create your own art at our Mega designer toy customisation workshop or at the hugely popular Lost & Found, where artists will help visitors to create artworks using recycled materials. There will be plenty of entertainment for the whole family too, as our dance, music and drama students show off their talent in our two theatres. There will also be live music and dance performances throughout the day on our buzzing outdoor piazza, and visitors can take part in traditional African drum circles with Dubai Drums. Visitors soaking up the sun on the piazza will also be able to catch some live art, as some of Dubai’s most talented emerging artists work on the extension of DUCTAC’s outdoor mural, an expanding work of art that brings a smile to mall visitors all year round.

Informal Resistance is a series of works focusing on the transformation of figures over time, as they are placed under increasing pressure by society, politics and technology. The presence of the fourth dimension allows the artist to narrate movement and transformations, physically and spiritually.

The application of any pressure produces resistance and because the on-canvas figures are put under the same conditions as individuals living outside the canvas, they also will choose to resist. This resistance, the determination of the figures to survive, produces a transformation process, which is represented artistically. Maryam Nejad also brings her personal experiences to bear in her artwork; changes in the rhythm of an individual’s life and memories of winning and losing are narrated in this series of 20 fascinating and imaginative pieces that portray deformation and metamorphosis brought about by life’s pressures and resistance.

Throughout the years, the image of a skull has been related primarily to poison and danger. Yet through her second solo exhibition, Maisoon Al-Saleh is determined to reveal the skull’s other side – the side that can educate and spread an understanding of death, allowing people to learn from others’ experiences and cherish the value of life. Al-Saleh’s work shows that bones and remains can tell a story far beyond age and gender: they carry a person’s entire life, which man cannot see with his naked eye; and they reflect the imperceptible colours that reveal life within a painting’s dominant blacks and whites. In these paintings, people are brought back to life with brush strokes; and with dedication, examination and a scientific view, Al-Saleh visualises human life and the array of diseases, diets, religious beliefs, genetic connections, class structure and conflicts that we face in our daily lives.

About Maisoon Al-Saleh

Maisoon Al-Saleh was born in 1988 in Dubai. Since 2008 her art has mixed the figurative and the surreal with her concerns for the modern and the traditional Emirati culture. This is her own unique signature, which continuously fascinates her viewers. When aged 16 an X-ray caused Al-Saleh to muse over the complexities of such visual transparency and the human body in general. As a result, she decided to explore this concept through her art. While depicting the dead, Al-Saleh tries to highlight the struggles faced by individuals during their lives. Al-Saleh received her Interior Design degree from Dubai’s Zayed University in January 2010. www.punkarabia.com

PHOTOGRAPHY Through the Eyes of Saudi Arabian Women

VISUAL ART

Curated by Rania Razek, this inspirational exhibition highlights the work of 30 professional and emerging Saudi Arabian female photographers, whose 36 images follow five primary themes: Vision of Life, Portraiture, Abstract, Saudi Arabian Culture and Photo Art.

9

Photography Through the Eyes of Saudi Arabian Women shares its title with a photography book launched in Jeddah in April 2010, from which the images are taken. The 148-page book, which also accompanies the exhibition and took two years to produce, includes statements about the experience of being female in the Arab world, and the genderrelated challenges that women in such societies face. Many experience significant ordeals while working towards their career goals yet successfully go on to receive numerous awards and exhibit their work internationally.

Photography Through the Eyes of Saudi Arabian Women is an exhibition that illustrates a growing movement by Arab women to become entrepreneurs as a means of empowering themselves, and provides a view of an alternative society.

O Sounds is a rich composite of modern city sounds, endangered dialects, folksongs and dance-on-screen. This multimedia dance work explores the tensions and complexities arising as our bid to be increasingly progressive and modern erodes tradition. How much of our tradition can we afford to lose? How much has already been lost and can it be reclaimed? Through intensive research choreographer Swee Boon Kuik has interviewed and collected material from various Chinese dialect groups around Singapore. These dialects and their history are on the verge of extinction. The collected materials – in the form of spoken memoirs, folksongs and stories – make O Sounds a work that engages the senses entirely. Originally commissioned by the National Museum of Singapore and the National Heritage Board of Singapore, O Sounds is Kuik’s second full-length work and features collaborations with prominent designers and artists. It comes at an appropriate time when globalisation, progress and mass consumerism are rapidly changing the way people live, and it highlights the struggle between retaining the essence of who we are and our insatiable desire to move endlessly forward.

Kathakbox brings together Indian Kathak dance’s grace and vigour and Hip Hop’s laid back groove, combining complex classical rhythms with beatbox and the verbal dexterity of Kathak rap (Kavitt) with urban poetry. Rumi was born on 30 September 1207 in greater Balkh in the village of Wakhsh (Persia). He died on 17 December 1273 in Konya in present day (Turkey = then Seljuqids of Rum).

Jalal al-din who is also known as Rumi was a philosopher and mystic of Islam. His doctrine advocates unlimited tolerance, positive reasoning, goodness, charity and awareness through love. To him and his disciples all religions are more or less truth. Looking with the same eye on Muslim, Jew and Christian alike, his peaceful and tolerant teaching has appealed to people of sects and creeds. Rumi believed passionately in the use of music, and dance as a path for reaching God. For Mowlavi (Rumi), music helped devotees to focus their whole being on divine, and to do this so intensely that soul was both destroyed and resurrected. It was from these ideas that the practice of Whirling (SA MA) dervishes developed into a ritual form. Behrooz Gharibpour (playwright and Director of Mowlavi’s Marionette Opera) tried to show the story of Rumi’s life and his beliefs and he riddles more thant 30,000 poems of Mowlavi’s books and some other Iranian poets as like NASER KHOSRO, HASEF, ATTAR and… to create and opera in the same level of language this great mystic poet of Islamic World and he tried to show the most important points of Rumi’s life and introduces his doctrine.

Who can resist the story of a duke marrying his Amazonian queen? Of two sets of lovers who elope into the woods where they and the audience find Bottom and his funny friends rehearsing a play; feuding fairies; and a naughty sprite called Puck, whose mismanaged magic causes no end of merriment. It’s enchanting entertainment for people of all ages because the most famous lines are woven into easy-to-understand modern language. Audiences of all ages will find this magical performance simply a dream come true. www.shakespeare4kidz.com

“Shakespeare 4 Kidz reflect that they could have called themselves The Shakespeare Company for Children and Young People Who Want to Learn about Shakespeare and Be Entertained by His Stories in a Way That Everyone Can Enjoy or Understand. Thankfully, they didn’t, but that’s precisely what their easy-to-understand musical adaptations do.” The Stage “It’s clear and bright and fast-paced, with a strong cast… It goes down a storm. The Stage “It’s a riot!.. Strong voices, slapstick humour, delightful props and wonderful characters brought the play to life in an easy-tounderstand way. And the centuries-old tale of magic and infatuation proved just the tonic to intrigue the boisterous viewers into fascinated submission.” Gulf News “The production fairly romps along and the audience’s attention never faltered for a second, and that’s a real tribute to S4K, for these kids now know that Shakespeare is fun, not something to be dreaded or afraid of. And yes, I really enjoyed it too, as did the other adults in the audience. The ones behind me, with their very young families, certainly did.” British Theatre Guide

MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING

THU 10 - SAT 12 FEB 2011 Kilachand Studio Theatre Ticketed Event

Much Ado About Nothing is one of William Shakespeare’s great comedies, and for three nights the popular Dubai Drama Group is delighted to be performing this celebration of love’s triumph over injustice, cynicism, mistrust and hatred. ‘Much Ado’ revolves around two pairs of lovers: Beatrice and Benedick, and Claudio and Hero. The relationship of Claudio and Hero is full of obstacles, deception and false accusations, and is set against a love-hate relationship between the bickering Beatrice and Benedick. Mistaken identities, deception and a masquerade ball make Much Ado About Nothing one of Shakespeare’s sharpest, most hilarious romantic comedies.

Boutros is a child in an adult’s body. He experiences daily life and the outside world as many terrific, spectacular and offbeat adventures. The most regular situations become for Boutros, as for his predecessors Chaplin, Keaton and Mr. Bean, incredible dangers or discoveries. Only Boutros could resuscitate a fly or become a prisoner in a lift! Even the simple act of vacuuming becomes a potentially dangerous task. Boutros is like a foreigner discovering a new country’s lifestyle and habits. Adults and children alike will identify with Boutros as he shares, without words, the feelings he experiences as he undergoes the amazing adventure of his daily ‘quiet’ life.

About Boutros

The man who plays Boutros is... Boutros himself. Boutros the character is a dreamer; impassioned and romantic, he can also be choleric, stubborn and a brawler when things get tough. The real-life Boutros graduated from the famous Cannes school of acting. He has played under many famous and upcoming directors, including Bernard Sobel and Hélène Cinque. Though his favourite ‘playground’ is theatre, Boutros El Amari has also appeared in films, including Renaissance, directed by Christian Volckman, and is a drama professor at the Theatrical Academy in Nancy, France. www.lesdechargeurs.fr In addition to his show, Boutros will also be running interactive workshops to help participants discover their own inner clown! These fun workshops will allow you to develop your imagination and creativity and learn how the ordinary can become extraordinary.
