Important information for runners: Application information The race is full and there will be no registration on the day. If you need to discuss your application, change any personal details or discuss items sent in this pack, please ring the race hotline: 01782 396 113 or e-mail: [email protected]

Are you fit to run bristol? Remember that this event is a competitive race and is 10k / 6 miles long - please read the Hints and Tips section of this leaflet and ensure you prepare yourself for the race properly. You should take your decision to run on the day sensibly. If you could not comfortably run 3 miles one month beforehand, you may not manage the Bristol 10k in safety, or enjoy it. It is unfair to you, your family and the event staff to risk being a medical emergency, even if you are running for charity.

Medical information, race number and timing chip The most important items in this race pack are your race number and timing chip. It is essential that you bring them to the race and you have read and understood the race start assembly information. This will tell you which wave you will start in and the location of your warm-up and assembly pen (corresponding to the colour of your race number). NEVER swap your race number with ANY other runner as it could create a dangerous medical situation. Anyone who does swap their race number will be disqualified from the race and reported to UK Athletics.

Pre-race

You MUST provide full and correct medical and contact information on the back of your race number WITH A PERMANENT MARKER that is rain-proof and sweat-proof and ensure that your relatives (or other nominated contact) have your race number for reference. Also ensure you write the name and phone number of the relative or other person we can contact if necessary on the back of your race number. Try to remember to do this before you leave home. DO NOT PUT YOUR OWN CONTACT DETAILS ON YOUR RACE NUMBER.

Time zones Race numbers are coloured according to runner’s predicted times and wave start allocation, to help marshals ensure that runners are in the correct time zone at the start. This is very important, as slower runners starting too near the front could hinder faster runners. Please ensure that you position yourself in the right time zone at the start, which will be clearly marked with the colour of your number (white/red/yellow/green).

Race numbers Wear your race number ON YOUR CHEST, secured with a SAFETY PIN IN EACH CORNER. The number must NOT be cut or altered in any way to reduce its size. It is your responsibility to ensure you arrive at the finish line with your race number intact. Without it you will not get an official finish time, a medal, or be able to retrieve your bag. Do not remove your number until after you retrieve your bag and leave the race village. Please check the race website: www.runbristol.com for final information and advice.

Medical conditions

Timing chip

If you have a medical condition, it is vital that you notify the race organisers on 01782 396 113 prior to the event. Please also write details of your condition and / or any medication you are taking on the reverse of your number (for example: asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, notable allergies, cardiac conditions). Please read all the information on www.runnersmedicalresource.com before taking part in the race.

This will provide you with an accurate race time and should be attached securely by threading your shoelaces through the holes, flat side up, with the chip facing away from the shoe. Please return your chip for re-use - Collection Bins will be available in the Race Village after the race.

Walkers and Power Walkers

It is essential for the smooth organisation of the race that you assemble in the time zones allocated. In the past, other participants have experienced serious difficulties from walkers starting in the Start arrangements/Time zones wrong time zone and from power walkers who Any Racing Wheelchair Athletes will start from link arms and block their path. Race Day

For those who have taken part before, there are a number of changes to the Start this year. The race is not using College Green or City Hall and all runner services will be located on Harbourside. Pen locations will also be different, so please look out for the coloured flags that match your race number and mark your assembly area.

Assembly Information Due to the high number of runners wishing to take part in the race there will be a 2 wave start. Please note this will not affect finish times as each runner’s timing chip is only activated by crossing the Start mat – so times for all waves and all start areas will give an accurate record of the time taken to complete the 10k/6 mile course.

Wheelchair Athletes, Walkers & Power Walkers Racing wheelchair athletes must report to the Start Director by 9.00am. The wheelchair race will start at 9.15 – 9.25am ahead of the main field of runners. Slow runners, power walkers, walkers and non-racing wheelchairs will line up to the rear of the second wave.

Wave Starts & Time Bands Please check the race website for any later revisions. All runners should assemble in the pen that corresponds to the colour of their number from 8.30am. Runners starting in WAVE 2 are asked to ensure that they do NOT obstruct the path of wheelchair athletes or the lead runners who may be approaching the Finish Line (adjacent to the Start Pens) during the assembly for wave 2.

WAVE 1: White & Red Race Numbers

WAVE 2: Yellow & Green Numbers

Within each wave there will be colour coded time bands that correspond to the colour of the runner’s race number. Runners will only be permitted to enter the assembly pen that corresponds to the colour of their race number*. This means the race will be staggered, with 2 colour-coded groups starting in Wave 1 at 9.30am and 2 colour coded groups starting in Wave 2 at 9.45am as follows:

WAVE 1: RACE START 9.30am

WAVE 2: RACE START 9.45am

WAVE 1: White & Red Numbers BAGS & TOILETS: Harbourside ASSEMBLY PENS: Anchor Road White & Red zones Assemble from 8.30am – 9.15am

WAVE 2: Yellow Numbers & Green Numbers BAGS & TOILETS: Harbourside ASSEMBLY PENS: Anchor Road Yellow zone Assemble from 8.30am – 9.15am to be led forward to start line by race officials.

* Runners with White & Red numbers from WAVE 1 who miss their wave start or who wish to run

with slower companions may join the start for the Green Zone in WAVE 2 but runners in WAVE 2 may NOT join the runners in WAVE 1.

Race Day

Race entry information desk

Drink stations

An information point and FR Systems race administration desk will be open from 2pm to 5pm on Saturday 30 May and from 8am on race day next to the silver ball in Millennium Square, Harbourside.

Water will be located at approx 5km/3 miles and at the Finish. Please be considerate to other runners and the environment when you dispose of bottles. Do not throw them towards the river and help us recycle by using the bins provided.

Changing facilities Limited changing facilities will be located in the Runners Village (no shower facilities provided).

Medical points

Bag storage and labels Secure bag storage will be located in the Runners Village. Bags should be identified with your race number, name and address clearly written ON THE LABEL PROVIDED in this pack. Attach the label securely to your bag before handing it to the baggage stewards. All items are left entirely at the owners risk, the race organisers accept no responsibility. Your race number will be used as sole ID for the return of your bag, so do not remove it. Please do not bring valuable items to the race or leave any valuable items in your vehicle. Thieves do not know if bags left on display are empty, or if jackets have anything in the pocket and may break in to your vehicle to find out. Leave the glove box open to show that there is nothing of value inside and if you cannot avoid leaving items in your vehicle, put them in the boot.

Timing

Medical cover will be provided at the start/finish area and on the course. If you require medical assistance on the course, please notify the nearest steward. A sweep vehicle will follow behind the last participant and will collect any runners unable to continue who require a lift to the finish. Should you require urgent medical assistance just past the finish line, you will be escorted off the course. Otherwise please keep moving away from the finish line.

Course stewards and Instructions Course stewards will be located on the course to monitor, direct, assist and encourage runners. If you need assistance at any time during the race, they should be your first point of contact. Please be aware of the need to maintain emergency access at all times and observe stewards instructions to stay in the correct lanes as necessary. For this reason we ask that you do not wear headphones.

There will be a race clock on the lead car and one for each wave on the finish gantry. Due to the high number of runners there may be a delay in crossing the start line, but your timing chip will ensure that you will be given an exact time for your race.

Finish

Thank you…

At the end of the race runners will pass under the finish gantry and are then offered water, a foil blanket plus a medal and t-shirt. Please keep moving as quickly as possible through this area before exiting into the Harbourside Village area where bins will be available to return your timing chip.

The race organisers and sponsors would like to thank all those individuals and organisations without whose assistance the race would not be taking place, particularly the Chief Marshals, Charity marshals, St John Ambulance, the Ambulance Service (SWAST), cadets and volunteers who give up their free time to make this event such a success.

Presentations There will be a presentation ceremony at approx 11.00am in Millennium Square for the Open, British, Wheelchair and Business Challenge winners. Winners are asked to report to the presentation area by the stage by 10.15am. Other prize winners will receive their awards in the post, when finishing positions have been formally verified. Please note that this will take approximately six weeks.

Race results Race results will be available on the race website by late afternoon on race day. There will also be a special supplement in The Bristol Post newspaper on Monday 1st June. An official Race Certificate will be sent to each runner following the race.

Race Photography Please ensure your race number is clearly displayed on your chest so that you can find your race photographs. This year’s official photographer is Marathon-Photos.com For further information visit the event website. www.runbristol.com

Hints & tips... for running the Bristol 10k Whether this is your first race or you are an experienced runner, please remember these helpful tips over race weekend.

DO...

◗ Do drink plenty of fluids before the start of the race. Dehydration is the biggest problem that distance runners have to overcome. ◗ Do acquaint yourself with the route and where all the facilities you need are located, particularly the drinks stations. A map is enclosed in this leaflet and may be downloaded from the event website. ◗ Do eat before the race. This should be about three hours before the race start. ◗ Do warm up thoroughly with plenty of stretching and easy running. ◗ Do plan your race realistically allowing for your general level of fitness and conditions on the day. ◗ Do follow the advice of the stewards on the day – they are there for your safety. ◗ Do get to the start area with plenty of time to spare. Try packing your kit the night before and ensure you have plenty of spare kit available, including a fresh pair of shoes. ◗ Do write details of any medical problems and medications (including herbal, alternative and over-the-counter) on the back of your race number.

DON’T...

◗ Don’t consume alcohol before the race. ◗ Don’t come to the race or take part if you have cold or flu symptoms. Don’t run the event with a cold or infection – your condition will only worsen, and it can lead to permanent problems. There are always other races! ◗ Don’t run in old shoes and ensure new shoes are ‘run-in’. It is essential that nothing rubs and leaves you with sores or blisters. ◗ Don’t run on a full stomach as this will make you feel extremely uncomfortable. ◗ Don’t keep training hard right up to the event – you’ll burn out. A few days rest before race weekend will leave you feeling refreshed and ready to race. For further guidance consult the Race Training Plan on the race website. ◗ Don’t run with injuries - you will only make matters worse. ◗ Don’t start off too quickly as this will inevitably lead to you slowing down. ◗ Don’t remove your race number until you leave the race village.

Injured? Need help?

As partners of runbristol the University of Bristol Sports Medicine Clinic Sports Physios, Sports Osteopath and Sports Masseurs have the experience and expertise to assess and treat your injury and help you reach your goals. Don’t wait until it’s too late! To book, phone 0117 928 8810. Our team will be there on race day to answer questions and help you. Come and see us in the event village. The Energy Tree The Energy Tree is a ground-breaking exhibit, designed to engage the public in energy issues. Delivered by Bristol-based Demand Energy Equality, designed by John Packer and hosted by At-Bristol Science Centre, it is a community-led public art installation and renewable power source that will also provide a number of interactive functions for the public – including phone charging and WiFi. The 15ft-high metal sculpture uses bio-mimicry to imitate a natural tree form. Its leaves are composed of solar photovoltaic panels fabricated by participants from the Bristol Drugs Project during workshops delivered by Demand Energy Equality. The launch event is on 21 April 2015, 17:30-19:00, Millennium Square. www.demandenergyequality.org

The Bristol Whales Opens 17 July 2015, Millennium Square

Designed and built by Bristol-based Cod Steaks, and initiated by Artists Project Earth and Bristol 2015, The Bristol Whales will see the creation of a temporary art installation on Bristol’s Harbourside which will represent the beauty of ocean life and the growing human threats to it. The life-size sculpture will show two whales swimming together through Millennium Square – the emerging tail of one, and the head and blowhole of the other. It will be unveiled to coincide with the Bristol Harbour Festival. The whales will be created from willow, harvested from Musgrove Willows in Somerset. Willow is a natural, fully sustainable material that biodegrades over time. The whales will be depicted in a

sea of plastic bottles, some of which were collected after the Bath Half Marathon in March. More will come from the Bristol 10K in May and other sources. The bottles will represent the detrimental effect of plastics in the oceans. Schools and young people across Bristol will be invited to take part in workshops, where they will try their hand at willow sculpture, and prepare green messages to go into the bottles. Other messages will come from politicians, musicians, writers, actors and conservationists from around the world. The bottles will be recycled after the sculpture is dismantled.  www.bristol2015.co.uk
