100 Years Of Bulldog Basketball

A

new era of Mississippi State basketball broadcasting takes center stage this year as Jim Ellis takes over the play-by-play duties following the retirement of the legendary Jack Cristil. He’ll be joined in the broadcast booth by Bart Gregory, who makes the transition from women’s basketball to the men’s side. This season marks the 29th year behind the mic for Ellis, who spent the previous 28 years as the color commentator. He also took over the play-by-play role for the football team this past fall. Ellis was named the “Outstanding Broadcaster in Mississippi” in both 2002 and 1999. In 2007, he was honored by the Mississippi Chapter of the National Football Hall of Fame for his contributions to amateur football. A 1969 Mississippi State alumnus, Ellis is probably best known as the ever-popular “Voice of the Baseball Bulldogs,” serving as the producer-director of one of the nation’s largest collegiate baseball radio networks for the past 32 years. In addition to teaming with Cristil on the MSU football and men’s basketball radio broadcasts, Ellis, in the past, handled play-by-play chores for the Lady Bulldog basketball team, a job that now belongs to Jason Crowder. During his stint at his alma mater, Ellis has also handled the play-by-play basketball and football duties for various national and regional TV networks. GREGORY A FAMILIAR VOICE Gregory, a native of Nanih Waiya, Miss., graduated from Mississippi State in 1999. He began his broadcast career at the University of West Alabama in 2000 before returning to his alma mater the following year. While at MSU, he has broadcast women’s basketball, as well as select baseball and men’s basketball games. The past three years, he’s also served as a co-host of all MSU football pregame and postgame shows. In addition to his radio responsibilities, Gregory currently serves as Assistant Athletic Director for Annual Giving, a position in the Bulldog Club he’s held since 2008. He began work on the MSU campus in March of 2000 as an account representative, selling sponsorships for the Bulldogs Sports Network. “I’m very grateful to Scott Stricklin (MSU athletics director and Don Williams of Bulldog Sports Properties for giving me this wonderful opportunity to live out a lifelong dream,” Gregory said. “Words can’t describe my excitement of getting to work with Jim Ellis, a great mentor and friend. To work with him is both a privilege and honor.” Mississippi State basketball fills the air-

The tandem of Jim Ellis (left) and Bart Gregory begin their first season together broadcasting Mississippi State basketball. Ellis, who spent the last 28 years alongside Jack Cristil as the color commentator, will now handle the play-by-play duties. Gregory has been with MSU since 2001.

waves across the Mid-South again this season thanks to the MSU Basketball Radio Network. Linking nearly 30 radio stations, the satellite-fed broadcast signal blankets the Magnolia State. Network programming is distributed and coordinated through the facilities of Learfield Sports, Inc., headquartered in Jefferson City, Mo. “Bart did a great job calling play-by-play for our women’s team, and I’m looking forward to having him join Jim Ellis to broadcast our games,” MSU coach Rick Stansbury said. “Both are very professional and will be great working together.”
