KLEIN COLLINS ATHLETIC TRAINING & SPORTS MEDICINE DEPARTMENT STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINER HANDBOOK MISSION STATEMENT: The Klein Collins High School Tiger Athletic Training and Sports Medicine Department’s primary goal is to provide the highest quality medical coverage including the prevention, recognition, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses to all student-athletes regardless of sport, gender, or ability level. Our secondary goal, which will enhance the primary mission, is to educate and help develop student athletic trainers into productive members of the health related professions and society. We strive to meet these goals in a manner that brings pride to our school, our athletic department, and ourselves.

Welcome to the Klein Collins High School Athletic Training Program! It will be a rewarding experience to be a part of the Tiger Athletic Program. We are depending on you to become a skilled member of the Athletic Training Staff. The intent of this handbook is to familiarize the student athletic trainer (SAT) with the workings of the training room and the expectations. Do not be overwhelmed. As you progress, you will have the opportunity to contribute a great deal to the success of the program. Most of the work is not glamorous. Communication is essential as well as social and academic responsibility (you will often hear me say that you are the example and not the exception) ~ you and your actions both in school and out are a direct reflection of The Klein Collins Tiger Athletic Training & Sports Medicine Program, Klein Collins HS, KC Athletics, Klein ISD and your Staff ATs as well as your families! Athletic Training involves the prevention, recognition, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and illnesses. It is important for the student athletic trainer to become knowledgeable and confident with the daily responsibilities in the allied health care profession. The success of the Tiger Athletic Training Program relies heavily on the understanding and cooperation of everyone involved. An organization is only as strong as its members. We are a service organization intended to insure the best possible health care for each athlete. We must remember why we are here. First, you are here to get an education. Never let training duties or social situations interfere with your studies. Learn to budget your time in order to stay on top of your school work. Studies consistently prove that students in athletics fair better academically and in life! Secondly, we are here to care for the athletes of Klein Collins High School and its guests to the best of our ability. The most successful people are self-motivated, eager, loyal, and hard working. They only need to be told things once. Success might be defined as a series of failures. The only people that fail are those who are trying to accomplish something. These individuals try, fail, learn, and move on to the next task. You should have the drive to take on a task with the chance of failure, learn it, master it, and move on. Athletic Training is a multifaceted profession that demands knowledge and understanding of the athletic population. It will not be easy. Dare to take a risk. All student athletic trainers & their parent/guardian must read and understand the contents of this handbook. You and your parent/guardian must sign the acknowledgment form; the signed form is to be turned into the Staff Athletic Trainer prior to the start of each school year. You are expected to work within the goals and policies of the Tiger Athletic Department, Athletic Training Program and Klein Collins High School. The success of the training staff and ultimately the entire athletic program depends upon the punctuality, discipline, teamwork, time management, initiative, respect, communication and responsibility of each member. Again, we are glad that you are a member of our program! ATHLETIC TRAINERS We are Athletic Trainers, not trainers. Trainers train animals. The name is confusing because we do not train athletes for competition in the traditional sense of coaching. However, this is our official title set forth by the NATA (National Athletic Trainers Association) and Texas Advisory Board. Use the title Licensed or Certified “Athletic Trainer” and “Student Athletic Trainer” to diminish confusion. People will not understand our career, so it is part of your responsibility to educate the public. Remember, first impressions are often the ones that people remember most. GOALS The goals provided below are the backbone of a successful athletic training staff. To become a successful student athletic trainer and ultimately a successful person, you are expected to take these goals to heart and live by them day by day, not only in the athletic training room, but also in your daily life. Read, think about, and use these goals to change your weaknesses into personal strengths.  Develop a sound educational background from which you can further your skills and ultimately, provide a better standard of care for the athletes you work with.

2016-17

As you enter high school, more and more responsibility is placed on you. Allow the athletic training program to help you develop a greater sense of responsibility both in and out of the training room.

Self-discipline is the key to success. Discipline yourself to carry out the duties expected of you to the best of your ability. Often times, you will be asked to do things that are uninteresting or distasteful. Show your self-discipline and carry out your duties with pride.

Prepare yourself for the future. Tomorrow will be here before you know it. Look to the future, think of what you want to accomplish in one year, two years, and five years from now. Set your short term and long-term goals and ready yourself for life's challenges.

Learn to work with others. You are no longer in an "I" or “me" world. Others will depend on you and expect you to work with them. Learn to "give" and "take" of yourself. Working with people will carry you a long way in life.

Organization is a trait of successful people. An organized person is able to face adversity and conquer the situation. A disorganized person is left wondering why they did not perform to their capabilities. Organize, prepare, and be ready to react at all times.

The athletic training staff is a people-oriented service organization. In order to accomplish tasks as they arise, one must communicate well. When working within the training staff, the channels of communication must remain open. Learn to communicate with others efficiently.

When working with others, it is important to gain the confidence and respect of yourself and of those you work with. Both athletes and coaches will depend on your services. If you act responsibly and perform as expected you will receive the respect of those you work with.

COMMITMENT It is not the desire of this program to consume all of your free time as a high school student. However, assisting in the health and well being of Klein Collins High School athletic population is a huge responsibility and time commitment. If you truly have made a commitment to this program, to the athletes, and to yourself – you will remember to give your obligation the respect it deserves. It is NOT the policy of the Tiger Athletic Training Program to beg student athletic trainers to cover athletic assignments however If a lack of commitment is evident and such behavior persists then you will be dismissed from the program. **Failure to show up to assigned functions is grounds for dismissal as well as a lack of consistent communication! WORK OBLIGATION Monthly schedules will be handed out, posted in the training room, communicated via REMIND 101 and may also appear on the password protected web site. Some areas of scheduling will be open for discussion – others will not. If for some reason you cannot meet your student trainer obligations (illness, school, conflict, etc.) you must call the training room/ Staff Trainer ASAP or by 8:00am at the latest. Remember, good communication is essential. Please note that scheduling changes often occur- flexibility is critical; our schedule is driven by athletics competition & practices. HOLIDAYS Athletics in general do not take school holidays off therefore as Athletic Trainers we do not have school holidays off. While we don’t expect student trainers to miss all family trips over the breaks, a certain level of commitment is associated with this position. For example, if you are out of town for Christmas break be prepared to work over Spring Break. All student athletic trainers need to notify a Staff Athletic Trainer ASAP regarding time out of town over holidays prior to the schedule being posted- this should be done via the switch form (online), it will be your responsibility to find switches for assignments as they are needed (again with the communication). Varsity Student Trainers are expected to cover their assigned primary sport in the same manner that a varsity athlete is required to attend practice & games including any holidays- the team is yours thus switching will be expected to be at a minimum. SWITCHING/TRADING ALL switches for assigned/volunteered for games/practices MUST be approved by a Staff Athletic Trainer AT LEAST TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE OF THE SWITCH and should be reflected in the Athletic Training Master Schedule (Mrs. Marr). The switch form is located on the website. If a suitable replacement cannot be made – then the sport and the athletes will go uncovered; this is an unacceptable result and reflects poorly on the Program. A student’s willingness to work for one of their teammates in a time of need without receiving anything in return is a true sign of commitment to the team. It is these kinds of acts that may result in increased responsibility, leadership position and other rewards (extra points) determined by Mrs. Marr. Also volunteer hours to be used for NHS will also be available

2016-17

CONDUCT & SOCAL MEDIA: *** You have the responsibility to yourself, your family, your athletic department, and to Klein Collins High School to conduct yourself in a professional manner at all times; in as well as outside of school. Anyone who brings undue embarrassment to the Klein Collins Athletic Trainer Program, Tiger Athletics Department and/or Klein Collins High School may be dismissed from the program. Any SAT may be dismissed from the Program at the discretion of the Staff Athletic Trainers- this program is a privilege not a right. You will be held responsible for your conduct both in school and out- Character matters and personal responsibility is paramount. ****Be aware of your Social Media conduct as well- Do not post anything that may be considered unprofessional or embarrassing, Do not post anything regarding KC athletic/ AT information including pictures of injuries. Such Postings will result in immediate disciplinary action that may include suspension and/or removal from the program. All incidences will be judged on an individual basis by the Staff Athletic Trainers and may be referred to KC Administration pending other school consequences. Each SAT: you will be held responsible for your conduct both in school and out- Character matters and personal responsibility is paramount. Be careful and think before you post or repost! RELATIONSHIP OF STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINERS TO: Staff Athletic Trainers – The Staff Athletic Trainers are licensed medical professionals (LAT) charged with the health care of the student-athletes. Thus the Staff Athletic Trainers are ultimately responsible for your actions. The Staff Athletic Trainers are reasonable and willing to discuss questions or problems. However, discussions should be at the appropriate time and place. Due to the nature of our business there are times when questions should be held for later discussion. Athletics is an emotional business – do not let yourself get caught up in the excitement. Advanced Student Athletic Trainers – These students “know the ropes” and will be of assistance to the younger student athletic trainers. Check with them or a Staff Athletic Trainer when you are not sure about something that you have been asked to do. Team Physician – This Training Room would not exist without our team physician. We must treat him/her with the respect that he/she has earned. As a student you will have the opportunity to get to know and work with the team physician. You can also learn by watching and listening to discussions. If you are called on to report to the doctors or assist them, be sure to give them detailed information when reporting and follow their instructions specifically and efficiently. Coaches – Learn to get along with the coaches and make it a habit of learning their names – this information could be valuable in a time of need. However, as a student athletic trainer you should never discuss any injuries with a coach (or anyone! ALL INJURY INFORMATION SHOULD COME FROM A STAFF ATHLETIC TRAINER. If you are covering a sport alone, you can fill the coach in on basic information. Coaches are human and can become frustrated by factors beyond anyone’s control. Do not take it personally if a coach raises his/her voice towards you. Keep your head and do your job. Remember- it is not personal. General Public, Media, and Student Body – You may be confronted as to the health of an athlete by almost anyone. This information is CONFIDENTIAL to everyone outside of the doctors, athletic trainers, and coaches. This information should not be discussed outside of the Training Room at any time. This includes classmates, friends, and family. In such situations, it is the only appropriate time to act ignorant (“I DON’T KNOW – I’M ONLY A STUDENT”). A student trainer found to have communicated health information or violates the athletic training room confidentiality may be removed from the program- This is a major infraction! Athletes – The athletes are your peers. Thus it is sometimes difficult to maintain a professional relationship. THERE WILL BE NO FRATERNIZING WITH THE ATHLETES DURING TREATMENTS, PRACTICES, OR GAMES – PERIOD. As a student athletic trainer, you are here to assist in the prevention and treatment of athletic injuries – not to PAMPER athletes or provide special treatment. Do not discuss an injury with an athlete in specific or speculative terms. If you ever have a problem with a particular athlete; bring it to the attention of a Staff Athletic Trainer – ASAP. Remember, to treat these athletes as you would like to be treated yourself in a professional manner. DETENTION ASSIGNMENTS Student Athletic Trainers not only represent Klein Collins High School, but also Tiger Athletic Training Program and the KC Athletic department. Student Athletic Trainers should conduct themselves in a manner such that they are not given discipline assignments i.e., after school detention, ISS. This includes proper conduct in class, assignments turned in on time and being on time to class as well as in dress code. If you miss a practice due to a discipline problem, an additional assignment will be given in the athletic training room and loss of points/ privileges may occur. Referral to the DAEP will result in immediate removal from the Program. Continual Discipline issues (late etc.) will result in suspension or removal from the program (see Conduct!) DISCIPLINE In the unlikely event that a problem does occur within the Athletic Training Program, procedure will follow that of Klein Collins High School and the athletic department. Athletic Training Discipline notes (“D-NOTE”) may be issued and records of each action will be kept on file at the discretion of the AT. D-Notes/ issues may be communicated via email,

conferences as well as other written forms. Please note that if written infractions are given, this indicates that the SAT in question may be facing possible removal from the program. Some actions will automatically warrant a D-NOTE – i.e. Academics, uncorrected dress code problems, etc. Discipline Notes May Be Given By A Staff Athletic Trainer At Any Time For Any Reason - I.E. poor attitude, time management, poor academics, and irresponsibility as well as Social Media issues. The first offense may normally be handled by a conference with the SAT however we may also issue a D-NOTE to be signed by a parent and returned. Continual disregard & problems as well as the severity of the issue may/will result in a suspension and/or possible removal from the Program. **SATs are given daily feedback on their performance by the LATs- We have an open door policy; any and all students are welcome to discuss anything with us! CURRICULUM/ ATHLETIC TRAINING/ SPORTS MEDICINE CLASS/ NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY The Tiger Athletic Training Program will continually strive to improve the education and experiences of the student athletic trainers, as a student athletic trainer you will be enrolled in an Athletic Training and Sports Medicine classes. The Athletic Training/ Sports Medicine Classes are designed to enhance the educational experience of the student athletic trainer. Class work will include discussion of injuries seen during practice/games, skills and lessons that include Anatomy, Terms, GHATS Poster, as well as your participation in class. As a student athletic trainer, you are expected to maintain eligibility, to be on time, on site, and dress appropriately. The Tiger Sports Department’s Student Athletic Training Program level system for classification of student athletic trainers is based on skill and ability. In short, this system rewards those student trainers who show initiative and a willingness to learn. All sport assignments and benefits are based on the students’ athletic training level, education and completion of assigned work. All student athletic trainers are required to complete a fall project (GHATS) and attend GHATS Student Trainer Workshop. The more effort and enthusiasm you put into becoming a good student athletic trainer & teammate, the more you will get out of it. Please note that you will be graded for school assignments as part of your class grade and not for extracurricular assignments unless it is part of the curriculum (SM 2/ SM 3 do have extracurricular requirements!); games and practices are counted towards your letter jacket. Student Athletic Trainer 4 year education sequence is: 1st year- Sports Medicine I (Elective Credit) & Athletic Training (PE Credit) 2nd year- Sports Medicine II (Elective Credit) and Athletic Training (PE Credit) 3rd & 4th yrs.: Sports Medicine III (Elective Credit) and Athletic Training (PE Credit) OTHER- *KC Chapter-National Honors Society of Sports Medicine (Junior/ Senior Year) ACADEMIC RESPONSIBILITIES Academics are the primary focus of the Tiger Athletic Training Program & Klein Collins High School and should be given priority over your duties as a student athletic trainer. For this reason, a strict – but fair outline is in place to ensure that you dedicate the utmost attention to your academic endeavors. It is your responsibility to inform Mrs. Marr that you need to alter your schedule to concentrate on academics (again with the communication). However – this needs to be the exception rather than the norm. Failure to meet UIL standards is not acceptable. Remember you are the examplewe hold ourselves to a higher standard - Excellence in all that we do! Grade Monitoring- A Staff Athletic Trainer will check all progress reports the day of issue at the beginning of each class period. Student Trainers not enrolled in a class period are required to check in with their progress report. * A progress report that you receive a grade lower than a 70% may result in increased study requirements and eligibility issues. UIL Eligibility- You must maintain a minimum 70% or higher in each of you academic courses at all times. * If you receive any score of less than 70% at a UIL grade check (second progress report and report cards after that) – you are declared ineligible until the next grade check. Ineligible SATs will be eligible to cover practices but cannot cover games, NO PASS- NO PLAY according to UIL rules. Academic Corrective Action- You are required to attend tutorials for all classes that you do not maintain a 70% or higher for the entire time that you are ineligible and furnish a note from the teacher as proof of attendance. (You must make an effort to improve your grades!) * If you are ineligible you will be scheduled to only cover athletic practices – however, it will be your responsibility to find coverage (switches) for the games you are to miss during your ineligible time. * If you are still failing at the conclusion of the next grading period you will face possible suspension/ removal from the Athletic Training Program- Grades are of the upmost importance and will be treated as such. EVALUATIONS Periodically throughout the school year, a formal evaluation will be done with each student athletic trainer; each SAT get daily feedback! This will consist of each student reviewing themselves followed by a review with a Staff Athletic Trainer. These evaluations will be discussed with each student on an individual basis. This process will allow the student and staff to monitor progress and make any changes that may be needed. Evaluations will also be a true test of the student athletic trainer’s ability to handle constructive criticism. The staff Athletic Trainers provide daily feedback on each SATs performance and corrective directives as needed- we are all continually learning & improving!

TRAINING ROOM RULES AND REGULATIONS The Athletic Training Room is a medical facility and is to be treated as such. Therefore, the following rules and regulations must be strictly enforced to facilitate an organized, properly run training room.  Athletes are not to wear cleats into the training room. Any other type of shoe will not be allowed onto the treatment tables.  Shorts must be worn at all times by athletes. This is necessary to properly and effectively examine and treat injuries. Athletes are not allowed to wear pads on the tables. Athletes when being taped for practices and games should always wear shorts.  All athletes should shower before entering the training room in order to reduce contamination of equipment, infection, and the spread of disease. This rule is to be strictly enforced except in the case of an emergency.  Athletes should leave all equipment outside the training room. This helps prevent clutter in the training room. The athletic training room is not a self-service center. Athletes will be treated under the direction of the Licensed Athletic Trainers only!  No food or drinks at any time. Student trainers may eat and drink in the training room if: o There are no athletes in the training room. o We are in an off period o Preparations are completed (and you clean up your mess when finished)  Profanity and horseplay are not tolerated at any time by anyone.  Athletes may come in if they need us. If they don't, they are not to enter the athletic training room. The training room is not a country club, a health spa, a restaurant, or a place to shoot the breeze. It is a medical facility.  The office is off limits unless prior permission is secured. Knock and then wait to be invited in.  Rehabilitation equipment is delicate machinery. So do not touch the equipment unless given permission.  Keep your locker and the area around the lockers neat and clean at all times. All personal belongings should be in your locker.  In case of absence from school, practices, or games you must call the staff athletic trainers. Arrangements must be made to cover your absence. There are no excuses. Actions and inactions have consequences  Student trainers will be evaluated throughout the year and as deemed necessary by the staff athletic trainers.  Be where you are supposed to be, when you’re supposed to be there, doing what you are supposed to be doing. GENERAL EXPECTATIONS/INFORMATION Confidentiality – The Buckley Amendment along with the HIPPA Laws allow student-athletes the right to privacy of their records. The Training Room Staff will uphold this along with the right of all persons to have medical records kept confidential. ALL INFORMATION OBTAINED HERE STAYS HERE! THIS IS GROUNDS FOR IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL! Training Room Rules – As a student athletic trainer you are expected to be the example, not the exception to the Training Room Rules. Student athletes will look to you as an example of acceptable behavior in the Athletic Training setting. Equipment – Being in the Athletic Training Program will afford you the opportunity to work with many different first-aid and rehabilitative pieces of equipment. Some of these pieces of equipment are not very expensive and others can cost upward of several thousand dollars. Each Staff Athletic Trainer will do their best to teach you about each piece of equipment and how best to use it. However - it is your responsibility to learn as much about each item in your time as a student athletic trainer. It is also your responsibility to help maintain, and keep in top condition all of the equipment that you are cleared to use. If at any time you lose, break, or notice a broken piece of Training Room equipment it is of the utmost priority that you inform a Staff Athletic Trainer at the very first opportunity. The Staff Athletic Trainers may also revoke your privilege to use the Training Room equipment if they feel the need to do so. If at any time you do not feel comfortable using a piece of equipment please notify a Staff Athletic Trainer. If you travel with a team and bring Training Room Equipment such as a kit, water bottles, etc. it is your responsibility that this equipment is returned upon the teams return to campus – not kept overnight unless prior approval is given by a Staff Athletic Trainer.

REMINDER: ONLY A LAT MAY EVALUATE AND GIVE RETURN TO PLAY RECOMMENDATIONS!! Travel –WHEN TRAVELING ON A BUS, ALL STUDENT ATHLETIC TRAINERS AND EQUIPMENT ARE TO SIT IN THE FRONT OF THE BUS WITH THE COACHES AT ALL TIMES – NO EXCEPTIONS. Treatments – All injured athletes are to report to the Training Room for treatment/rehabilitation before school. We try to do our best to have all athletes participate in some way with their teams during their athletic period. The general rule of thumb is that if an athlete did not come to morning treatment then they are not “injured” enough to get out of athletics-this is up to the Staff Athletic Trainers’ discretion. Arrival Times – If you are traveling with a sport on a road trip - it is your responsibility to double check your departure time to ensure that you are on time. For most road trips you will need to arrive prior to the team departure time. If you are a working a home event it is your responsibility to arrive prior to the team’s arrival- most occasions the SATs covering Home events are not allowed to leave school (bring a dinner). This is crucial so that you can assist with settingup, taping, etc. THE MARR MANTRA: TO BE EARLY IS TO BE ON TIME; TO BE ON TIME IS TO BE LATE  we normally arrive a half hour to an hour before the team and leave after the team when all TX’s and clean up have occurred. Socializing – SOCIALIZING AT PRACTICES/GAMES WITH ATHLETES, FANS, PARENTS, OR EVEN EACH OTHER WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. You are there to pay attention to your environment/ surroundings. Handle your business/socializing before or after your schedule practice/game. We encourage you to be friendly and have FUN– however; you have a job to do (be responsible!) Cell Phones – It is strongly encouraged, but not necessary that you have a cell phone. These come in very handy for those late night returns to campus, as well as, notifying Mrs. Marr of injuries while on the road. Mrs. Marr has her phone on 24/7 and will always answer or return your call. Text messaging will follow the KISD Policy and the paperwork must be on file prior to participation. Please remember NO CELL PHONE USAGE DURING PRACTICE/EVENT COVERAGE unless an emergency! ~ put your phone on “vibrate” mode. During school, your cell phone should not be on or visible- this is a KISD rule and the excuse that you have it for Athletic Training is not acceptable. *REMIND 101 will be used for class announcements. Taping – Each student athletic trainer will have the opportunity learn several different taping jobs for the prevention/ support of athletic injuries. All student athletic trainers are required to be proficient in the basic tape jobs. It is imperative that you do not tape anyone for any reason until first checked off by a Staff Athletic Trainer and only under the direct supervision of a LAT. Varsity Letter/jacket – Student Athletic Trainers have the opportunity to earn a Varsity Letter for Athletic Training in accordance with Klein ISD and Klein Collins High School lettering policies. As a SAT you will be eligible for this privilege after you have satisfactorily completed the following competencies which should coincide roughly with the completion of the second (sophomore) year of student athletic training with a Varsity assignment thus a SAT entering their third year (junior) should be a Varsity SAT with a letter jacket or eligible by the Spring of their 3rd year. ** SEE Skills Check Sheet** Student athletic trainers must achieve the following objectives and Level Skills Check Sheet to be eligible for a varsity letter award- Competencies include but are not limited to: 1. FAILURE TO TURN IN THIS FORM WILL RESULT IN NO POINTS GAINED FOR THAT WEEK or a reduction in points. We feel that this will teach responsibility and track the amount of hours worked by each student. The awards are based on each award in sequence for each year worked. However, it is possible for each student to try and get these awards as soon as they can. We encourage a four-year commitment from each student. *NATA POSITION STATEMENTS & UPDATED Information - It is the responsibility of the student & parent/guardian to be aware of all policies/ procedures as well as any updates. Lack of knowledge is not acceptable reasoning- Ignorance is not bliss!

DRESS CODE  All student athletic trainers should be dressed professionally and conservatively at all times. The purpose of this policy is to bring no attention to any one individual on our team. DISCIPLINE  In the event that a discipline problem does arise, the student will be issued a discipline note and possibly referred to their assistant principal if the situation requires. I have read the Tiger Student Athletic Trainer handbook, discussed with my parents, and understand the academic, time and conduct requirements that are necessary to be a student athletic trainer at Klein Collins High School. I fully accept responsibility for my conduct and my academics. I also agree to abide under the standards set for me as a student athletic trainer in this program.
