Our offer is exclusive: maximum reliability. Through the unique combination of ten decisive advantages.

MR – Maximum Reliability For more than 80 years, we have been ensuring trouble-free regulation of transformers all over the world.

EuropE

VACUTAP® VV for the Paris Métro One of the world’s largest transportation companies, the Paris Métro company RATP (Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens) relies on the advantages of MR vacuum switching technology. It was primarily the considerably reduced amount of maintenance work (maintenance-free up to 300,000 switching operations) that convinced technicians in the French capital. In addition, consistently positive experience in the past with MR tap-changers was a decisive factor in the purchase of VV tap-changers. Seven large substations of the RTE (three with 225 kV, four with 63 kV) supply the power for the Métro. The RATP operates 15 transformer stations, each with two transformers, which convert the voltage to 15 kV. A total of 125 smaller transformers, spread throughout the city, then convert the voltage to the required 750 V.

Advantage 1/10 The certainty of high-level experience. Our expertise, gleaned from over 80 years of regulating transformers, makes the crucial difference. More than 50 % of the world’s electricity consumption flows through MR on-load tap-changers.

Advantage 2/10 The certainty of unique quality. Perfection through precision: We are firmly committed to this motto, which is why we manufacture key components ourselves. Just to make absolutely sure that everything functions reliably and durably.

AsiA

MR technology for EXPO 2010 in Shanghai The Expo’s most important electricity supplier is the Jing’an (Expo) Underground Substation. It is China’s first underground, digital and intelligent 500 kV substation and is one of only two underground 500 kV substations worldwide. The Jing’an (Expo) Underground Substation is a project that has been constructed completely underground, at extreme depth and over an extremely large area. It is the deepest top-down design project in Shanghai to date, constructed downwards from the earth’s surface, with a depth of 33.5 m and total underground construction space of 53,000 sqm. The substation consists of two groups of (up to six) 500 kV transformers from Toshiba and two 220 kV transformers from Siemens. All these transformers are equipped with MR’s DEETAP® DU off-circuit tap-changers. Power Quality (PQ) technology is used in a central section of the world exhibition EXPO 2010 in Shanghai, the Expo Boulevard. More than 500 capacitors and 300 reactors were delivered by PQ, one of MR’s business areas. The reactive power of the system is 13,200 kVar.

DEETAP® DU for the largest hydroelectric power plants in China The Three Gorges Hydropower Plant is the largest hydroelectric power plant in the world, and consists of the power plant on the left-hand riverbank, the power plant on the right-hand riverbank, the underground power plant and the service power plant. Its total installed capacity is 22.5 GW. MR supplied DEETAP® DU off-circuit tap-changers and VACUTAP® AVT on-load tap-changers for this project. The Laxiwa hydroelectric plant on the Yellow River (Whangho) in China went into service in 2009. The plant is equipped with 15 DEETAP® DU. The compact off-circuit tap-changers are extremely sturdy, with a rated insulation level of up to 362 kV. They regulate the step-up transformers of the enormous system. Laxiwa has a total capacity of 4.2 GW and six generators, each with a capacity of 700 MW. The annual energy output yielded by the power plant is 10,223 GWh. The current is transmitted to the northwestern electrical power network from Laxiwa to Guanting and Xining via two 750 kV extra-high voltage lines.

Advantage 3/10 The certainty of a lifetime of reliability. We test our products far beyond all the applicable standards, thus setting new industry standards. The best possible conditions for the best functions. For the whole lifetime of a transformer.

Advantage 4/10 The certainty of low maintenance costs. Our VACUTAP® technology can help you extend the service intervals of on-load tap-changers decisively. Our world record is 600,000 switching operations without maintenance. We can thus help you reduce your operating costs and increase the availability of your equipment.

SOUTH AMERICA

VACUTAP® VR used in South America’s most important high-voltage project The NEA-NOA connection (northeast Argentina – northwest Argentina) is currently the most important high-voltage project both in the country and in the entire region. It is the most comprehensive project in the history of Argentina for transmitting and supplying electrical energy. Once it is completed, the NEA-NOA line will be 1200 km long and will connect the power supply system in the northeast of the country with the power network in the northwest. The 500 kV line will run through nine provinces. The NEA-NOA project is part of the opening up of power generation in northwest Argentina. The new grid will enable energy to be imported and exported from and to Brazil under favorable conditions. The current will be transmitted by one of Siemens Brazil’s transformers. An MR on-load tap-changer – a VACUTAP® VR to be precise – will handle the regulation of the transformer.

EuropE

MR on-load tap-changers bring the Spanish sun to the power grid The Andasol 3 thermal power plant will generate about 150 GWh of power with a power plant capacity of 50 MW per year, after its commissioning at the beginning of 2011. A transformer from StarkstromGerätebau GmbH in Regensburg will feed this produced energy to the grid. Inside the transformer, an OILTAP® M will keep the voltage steady. Two solar thermal plants with MR on-load tap-changers are already in operation in Extremadura (in Southwest Spain). A VACUTAP® VR is in operation in La Florida and a VACUTAP® VV is ensuring steady voltage conditions in La Dehesa. Here, a TAPCON® 230 is handling the voltage regulation.

Advantage 5/10 The certainty of comprehensive expertise. These challenging special applications enable our experts to demonstrate their profound cumulative expertise. And the results can be examined quickly in our globally unique testing facility in Regensburg.

Advantage 6/10 The certainty of the custom-made solution. With our extensive experience, we are your competent sparring partner for all your technical issues, at all times. We don’t provide you with the first solution that suggests itself, but with the one that is precisely tailored to your needs.

EuropE

MR on-load tap-changers offshore The Horns Rev 2 wind park of the Danish power provider is producing up to 200 MW in a stormy environment. A total of 91 wind turbines are in operation 10 km off the Danish coastal town of Esbjerg. Two on-site VACUTAP® VR on-load tap-changers regulate two transformers from Siemens Transformers Austria. These transformers work as step-up transformers, which means that they emit a higher voltage to the secondary winding than they receive from the primary winding. Messko supplied an MPreC and an MTO for pressure relief and oil level indication as the suitable accessories for malfunction-free operation. It goes without saying that all devices must have an extremely high degree of anti-corrosion protection. As VACUTAP® on-load tap-changers only require maintenance every 300,000 switching operations, the 200,000 households connected to this wind park can be constantly supplied with economical, clean energy.

Asia

Always live thanks to OILTAP®: the world’s largest underground metro station in Dubai The “Dubai metro” is the longest fully automated subway network in the world. The first section, known as the “Red Line”, was opened on September 9, 2009. Three substations supply electricity to the underground metro station. The systems work completely independently from the rest of the power supply system. Even if the entire power supply in Dubai fails, the metro traffic is not affected. Three MR OILTAP® MS on-load tapchangers work inside the transformers. The operator is the DEWA (Dubai Electricity and Water Authority).

Advantage 7/10 The certainty of close customer proximity. Wherever our customers are, we are close to them. That’s because we maintain the most dense service network worldwide and offer ongoing training courses in our own training centers.

ADVANTAGE 8/10 The certainty of the system provider. We don’t just supply you with individual components. We deliver a perfectly coordinated system of quality products for all aspects of transformers. And beyond.

Australia

Mobility needs stability – MR at Sydney International Airport Sydney International Airport is located around 15 km south of the Sydney city center at Botany Bay and is the most important traffic intersection for the airlines Qantas and Virgin Blue. VACUTAP® VM

VACUTAP® VM – unique versatility – unique future security

VACUTAP® VM – Pioneering technology

All over the world transformers are increasing in age. It is no longer unusual for them to have an operating life of 50 years and more. Of course, this also means that on-load tap-changers must also work trouble-free throughout this long period and beyond. Our VACUTAP® VM on-load tap-changer is the answer to this challenge. Our engineers have successfully combined the legendary reliability of the OILTAP® M supplied in more than 70,000 units with the advantages of vacuum switching technology.

Save on maintenance costs – and be on the safe side

All-rounder – in network operation and industry

This new development incorporates both our expertise in timetested oil technology as well as more than 20 years of field experience with vacuum switching technology. The result is a design comprising established components combined with innovative high-performance materials. Our efforts were focused on robustness - particularly in applications where there is an increase in stress such as in transformer overload operations. The target for our engineers: maximum reliability with minimum maintenance. Their impressive solution: 300,000 switching operations with absolutely no maintenance. The diverter switch insert even has a lifetime of 1.2 million switching operations.

The VACUTAP® VM is a true all-rounder. Its main area of application is in 30-200 MVA transformers and at voltage levels of 110-230 kV typical in transmission networks. However, the VACUTAP® VM also covers challenging electric arc furnace, HVDC, electrolysis, rectifier and phase-shifter applications. And the best part of all: anyone who has previously relied on oil technology can upgrade to our proven vacuum technology simply by using the VACUTAP® VM.

Plug & Play – simple switch from oil to vacuum Switching to vacuum technology has never been easier: The VACUTAP® VM can be retrofitted and is fully compatible with OILTAP® M models. This also basically applies for tap-changers based on former licenses as well as unauthorized OILTAP® M-like adaptations by competitors which do require reliable replacement.

Quality down to the last detail – longer tested lasts longer Endurance pays off. This is why the VACUTAP® VM has undergone longer and harsher tests than any other OLTC we have previously developed. More than 200 units were tested in advance of the series production in order to provide statistical confidence for fault-free production. During this process, our test engineers consciously exceeded the values that are specified in the IEC directives many times over. As a result, the VACUTAP® VM had to meet 3 times the mechanical specifications. This meant 1.5 million switching operations instead of 500,000! Or during the service duty tests: 600,000 switching operations instead of 50,000. All of this served a single purpose: being able to give our customers the maximum assurance of trouble-free operation.

Transformer design made easy – Perfectly prepared with TAPMODELLER® We are the only supplier of on-load tap-changers to offer transformer manufacturers an additional service free of charge: TAPMODELLER®.
