City of Olsztyn Olsztyn – the city young in spirit

Olsztyn is the capital of Varmia and Masuria Voivodeship. In boundaries of Olsztyn where the University is located, are lying eleven lakes, large parks and forests, which occupy more than 25 % of the city area. Between the green and the lakes you can find Olsztyn, with many monuments from the 14th Century such as the medieval castle founded by the Chapter of the Bishopric of Varmia, the Old Town Hall, the High Gate and the Gothic cathedral, where organ music is performed and where the university choir frequently gives concerts. The Old Town is a place always full of life, it’s the favorite meeting place of Olsztyn inhabitants, where many musical events, theatrical happenings and performances taking place. A great number of marinas, beaches, piers and restaurants give an incentive to take up active relaxation. Most famous resident of Olsztyn was Nicolas Copernicus. 1.1 History and monuments In 1346 the Old Prussian forest in the vicinity was cleared and a place was selected on the Alle, now Łyna River, for a new settlement. The Crusader Knights began the construction of Order Castle in 1347 as a stronghold against the Old Prussians, and the settlement of Allenstein was first mentioned the following year. The German name Allenstein meant a castle on the Alle River. It became known in Polish transliteration as Olsztyn. The settlement received municipal rights from Johannes von Leysen on 31 October 1353, and the castle was completed in 1397. Skipping to 20th century on 12 October 1939, after the German invasion of Poland that began World War II, the Wehrmacht established an Area Headquarters for Wehrkreis I that controlled the sub-areas of Allenstein, Lötzen (Giżycko) and Zichenau (Ciechanów). Beginning in 1939, members of the Polish-speaking minority, especially members of the Union of Poles in Germany, were deported to Nazi death camps. Allenstein was plundered and burnt by the invading Soviet Red Army on 22 January 1945, as the Eastern Front reached the city. German population evacuated the region or were subsequently expelled. On 2 August 1945, the city became part of Poland according to the Potsdam Agreement, and officially renamed to Polish Olsztyn. In October 1945, the German population of Olsztyn was expelled by Order of the City Commanders of Olsztyn. Olsztyn’s monuments witnessed all these great events and were a symbol of historic complexity and multicultural character of this land. Catholic traditions were interwoven with Protestant and Orthodox ones, Polish with German, the tradition of mediaeval craftmen’s

workshops – with the products of the 19th century industrial revolution. The admiration of Olsztyn’s monuments of history means wandering through various periods of the town’s development. It is worth remembering that the twists of history, which affected Olsztyn severely, caused that a large part of the possessions of the generations living in the town have not been preserved till our time.

More about Olsztyn’s history: http://www.olsztyn.eu/en,tozsamosc-miasta,history.html http://www.castlesofpoland.com/prusy/olsz_hist_en.htm  Lyric of Anthem of Olsztyn “Oh, My Beloved Warmia” which you can hear everyday form the City Hall: Oh, my Beloved Warmia thou, my motherland, thou put me to sleep in your arms, my heart is filled with overwhelming joy. You were treacherously captured, but our labour was not in vain. The chains of the captivity have been broken today by the folk themselves We, the loyal children of Warmia, we do love our beloved motherland. After years of historical maelstroms the time has come for joy. There are now Polish flags flying over the Olsztyn old castle, the former seat of the Teutonic (Crusader) Knights, that is a witness to a miracle of the national rebirth! The enemies were afflicting Warmia until the world was shaken by the war and our beloved White Eagle changed its flight path towards Warmia.

Oh, the resurrected Warmia do hear the song of your children Oh, Warmia, the entire Poland shed her blood for you.  Baby Pruskie - stone statues of woman, probably originating from the Middle Ages, of unknown function and origin. They were found in some parts of Warmia Region. One of them is located on courtyard of the castle in Olsztyn. Statues are featured on the symbol of the city and the region, thus you can buy figurines, fridge magnets and bookmarks with their image  What to see: Must-goes: -

The Warmia Chapter Castle The High Gate The Old Town Hall St. Jacob’s Cathedral basilica in Olsztyn

Astronomical Observatory - Copernicus fans can get a bit more hands-on at the astronomical observatory, located in an old water tower out to the east of town. It was enjoying a much-needed renovation at the time of writing; check with the tourist office for observation hours and prices. Planetarium- For a dramatic look at the heavens, the planetarium has shows and occasional temporary exhibits. Soundtracks in English, German, French and Russian are generally offered during two shows a day, at noon and 2pm. The Rynek (formally called ul Stare Miasto) was destroyed during WWII and rebuilt in a grandiose style only superficially referring to the past. It's best seen at night, when the town hall is lit up with dazzling spotlights and in summer half the population turns out for an evening drink. Castle - Summer Thursdays with Nicolas Copernicus – a face-to-face meeting with the castle’s most prominent resident. This is an educational and entertaining event addressed to both residents of Olsztyn and tourists (July and August).
