School Year 13/14 Issue 1 October 2013 Dear Colleagues, Last week I spent a morning at White City Elementary in classrooms with the administrative team and another morning at Eagle Rock Elementary in classrooms with the Cabinet and Board of Directors. It just doesn’t get any better than that! Supporting the great teaching and learning that is happening across our district is truly joyful!

DISTRICT LINK

Let me share with you what impresses me the most of what I observe. We, as a team of educators, have come so far in our journey together. I think of a few years back when we had a district-wide conversation about the need to increase student engagement since it’s such a powerful instructional strategy. We began our journey with TPTs, total participation techniques. Like everything else, some of us were more accomplished than others. At first, when trying something new, it seems uncomfortable and forced. But just like our students, with practice, we become much more adept. So back to what impresses me about all of you in the classroom. Our students are so much more engaged in their learning and that translates into increased learning. I’m seeing desks and tables arranged in a way that promotes collaboration and learning from each other. I’m hearing more and more student talk and less teacher talk. I’m fascinated by the integration of technology and how it helps us personalize education for each of our students. This is not easy. It takes a very skilled, strategic educator to create this kind of classroom environment that maintains its focus on the learning targets while teaching students it’s their responsibility to be active participants in their learning. This is not the classroom most of us came through. This is the classroom of the 21st century and JCSD9 is moving forward nicely. Our students are growing and meeting their individual growth targets across the district. And we, the educators and staff, also continue to grow and learn in the face of all of the new initiatives knowing that today is better than yesterday, and tomorrow will be better than today. Thank you for all you do to best educate our kids and for always keeping the belief that “YES, we can!” We are given such a special, but extremely challenging gift. We touch and mold the future. I wouldn’t exchange this journey for any other!

Respectfully, Cynda (more picture on page 2)

Fall is upon us and it feels like school! There is no mistaking the smell of fall in the air, and I am certain that all of our D9 staff members can tell that school is back in session. It is a great privilege for me to visit all the schools in JCSD9. I have been in every building and many classrooms since the first day of school and I am pleased to report that ALL of our buildings have opened smoothly. I am always amazed at how we open the doors, students show up and everything just starts working. Thanks to everyone that has made the beginning of the year so successful. Thank you to the business office for getting us through OEBB open enrollment and I particularly appreciated the paycheck on September 20th! I know there have been a few hurdles as we prepare for proficiency grading and synergy implementation, but I know that we will continue to do our level best for each and every student in our district. Thank you to all the instructional coaches and IT technicians for their continued support in ALL areas. I would like to remind everyone to take care of yourself both physically and mentally. Resist the urge to stay an extra 30 minutes or extra 3 hours. Go home! Recharge your batteries and come back to school the next day ready for the next challenge. We are all in this together and I am excited about the opportunities that this year will bring.

Roses to Nicolle Barnes and Kim Saiz for building the plane as they fly it - and serving passengers along the way Roses to Doug Robertson for above and beyond participation in school-wide projects and teams. Thanks to Loni O'Connor for inspiring WCE staff to stay healthy and fit with ZUMBA classes. Kids Unlimited deserves a shout out for enrolling 78 students during their first month. Shelley Cartright of SODEXO deserves recognition for flawless health inspections of our WCE kitchen. Roses to D-9 and the Maintenance Department for our new roofing at WCE - no more bird's nests in the breezeway ceilings and no rain in classrooms! Roses to Kennia Munroe for doing a great job in her new position as principal at Shady Cove School this year. She is putting in many, many extra hours to make sure everything is getting done effectively and she is also keeping the staff happy! Roses to Kenna Munroe for her support to the substitute driver after her bus was backed into at Shady Cove Elementary. kenna stepped in & filled out the accident report and help shield the bus driver from the other driver. While the substitute was visibly shaken, Kenna's calm demeanor was a blessing. Roses to Eagle Point Middle School Staff for your patience as we roll out our new Student Information System and Proficiency Grading. Everyone has been so patient and flexible and willing to problem solve to make the result work for everyone. YOU have also been AMAZING (as usual) as we have made over 300 schedule changes to balance our numbers for the influx of 7th graders. Panthers Rock! 6

Roses to District 9 Tech Department! Wow! Your busy summer has been evident in all of the new tools we have this year! Thank you for finding solutions to our everyday problems! Your positive, problem solving attitudes give us confidence with the new Student Records System! Roses to District 9 Maintenance Department! Our facility is in good shape and we are getting many compliments about the maintenance of the beams at our school and overall grounds. We appreciate your attention to our site! Roses to District 9 Transportation Department! On the first day of school, a 6th grader in White City got on a bus and rode to EPMS. The Wolf reported to our front office-realizing the buildings were similar but different. After one quick phone call, his bus driver came to our school and promptly delivered him to WMMS! It could have been quite traumatic but his bus driver was so calm, and reassuring that no tears appeared. Roses to District 9 District Office! There are so many changes this year and your team has been managing them all well. We appreciate the extra work you have done to help our school operate smoothly with all of the changes! (e.g. Insurance, New Teachers, New SPED Students, INDISTAR, Curriculum Maintenance, etc.) Hooray Mike Herzog! A community member made a point to tell me that even though her student is now in High School, she appreciated that you continued to connect and support her son through the summer--as you did when he was a student at EPMS. Roses to Jenn Whitehead for starting off the school year with a bang. She has worked extremely hard, put in tons of extra hours so we could have a successful start. Roses to Cindy Leavens for doing an amazing job as substitute Special Services Secretary. She always has a smile on her face, even when she's "flying by the seat of her pants."

Ms. Karina Chavez Rizo is our newest administrator! Ms. Rizo is now the principal of Mountain View Elementary School. For the past ten years she has been working at Jackson Elementary School in Medford Oregon as a classroom teacher. In addition to her classroom duties, Ms. Rizo has been the summer school migrant education coordinator for the Medford School District, and in her spare time she has been the “acting principal” for Jackson Elementary when the principal was not available. Ms. Rizo brings many strengths to our team, and we are very excited about her plans for Mountain View Elementary! Her experiences as a bi-lingual, bicultural native Spanish speaker are going to be an incredible asset to the Mountain View community. Welcome aboard! Mrs. Kennia Munroe is now the principal of our district’s “Model School,” Shady Cove! Mrs. Munroe has been serving as the instructional coach at Shady Cove, and the staff at Shady Cove helped select her as their next leader. Prior to being selected as principal, Mrs. Munroe served the Shady Cove School community for 23 years. An incredible instructional leader, Mrs. Munroe’s strengths include literacy instruction, engagement strategies, system-wide improvement, and differentiation for students at all ability levels. Her continued leadership at Shady Cove School will be asset to the children, families, and staff of the Upper Rogue.

Mrs. Jennifer Whitehead gets the award for most miles traveled during 2013 to arrive as a new administrator in JCSD9. Mrs. Whitehead most recently was a building principal in New Zealand, and she is now the new principal at Hillside Elementary School. She has an extensive career in education which includes 16 years as a teacher at the elementary level and collegiate level. In addition to her time as a classroom teacher, Ms. Whitehead has served as an administrator for 7 years in New Mexico and New Zealand. Mrs. Whitehead has already begun her work at Hillside Elementary and we look forward to watching her build new relationships with the staff, parents, and community here in JCSD9.

29

We also have a new assistant principal at Eagle Point High School. Ms. Valerie Cordle has been named as the newest assistant principal in our district. Ms. Cordle has been an elementary teacher at Mountain View Elementary, and she also served as principal of Mountain View Elementary for most of the 2012/2013 school year. Ms. Cordle has also been an instructional coach in our district for the past few years and she has helped Mountain View show great improvement during the past five years! Ms. Cordle is excited about beginning her administrative career at EPHS, and we look forward to watching her work with the administrative team at the high school. Mr. Paul Cataldo is the new principal at Eagle Point High School. Mr. Cataldo began his career at Eagle Point High School about 30 years ago! He was a teacher and counselor and could often be seen jogging through the streets and hills of Eagle Point. It seems only fitting that Mr. Cataldo is back where he started, and we are looking forward to his leadership for EPHS. Mr. Cataldo has been an administrator for many years working as an assistant principal at McLoughlin Middle School, an assistant principal at South Medford High School, the principal of Hedrick Middle School, and most recently as the principal at White Mountain Middle School. Mr. Cataldo has done fantastic work at White Mountain Middle School and he is going to be missed, but he has already begun to bring his positive leadership style to Eagle Point High School. ALL students in Jackson County School District 9 will benefit from Mr. Cataldo’s leadership at EPHS! Go Eagles! Mr. Tim Rupp is the new principal at White Mountain Middle School. Mr. Rupp was the assistant principal at EPHS for four years and served as principal of EPHS for one year. During Mr. Rupp’s tenure at EPHS the school earned their first “OUTSTANDING” rating from the Oregon Department of Education. Additionally, academic improvement was seen in all student subgroups. Mr. Rupp is excited about bringing this type of academic achievement and focus to White Mountain Middle School.
