SAFETY WARNINGS

! WA R N I N G ! ! ! When working with electrical or electronic controls, make sure that the power source has been locked out and tagged according to OSHA regulations and approved local electrical codes.

LOCKOUT/TAGOUT

LOCKOUT/TAGOUT PROCEDURES The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that, in addition to posting safety warnings and barricading the work area, the power supply has been locked in the OFF position or disconnected. It is mandatory that an approved lockout device is utilized. An example of a lockout device is illustrated. The proper lockout procedure requires that the person responsible for the repairs is the only person who has the ability to remove the lockout device. In addition to the lockout device, it is also a requirement to tag the power control in a manner that will clearly note that repairs are under way and state who is responsible for the lockout condition. Tagout devices have to be constructed and printed so that exposure to weather conditions or wet and damp locations will not cause the tag to deteriorate or become unreadable. RITE-HITE® Corporation does not recommend any particular lockout device, but recommends the utilization of a device that meets OSHA standards (refer to OSHA regulation 1910.147). RITE-HITE® Corporation also recommends the review and implementation of an entire safety program for the Control of Hazardous Energy (Lockout/Tagout). These regulations are available through OSHA publication 3120.

CHANGING PIVOT SIDE IN THE FIELD I M P O R TA N T ! ! ! DO NOT remove the pivot bolt without retaining the internal sleeve bushing. If sleeve bushing is lost, complete rail disassembly is required The rail pivot assembly consists of a bracket, two flange bushings and an internal sleeve bushing.

Flange Bearing Sleeve Bearing Flange Bearing Hex Nut

Remove the factory installed nuts. Simultaneously slide a round bar through all three bushings while removing the pivot bolt in order to retain the internal sleeve bushing. Rotate the bolt 180 degrees and reinstall through three bushings. Tighten nut until internal sleeve is compressed. DO NOT over tighten.

Nylock Nut FIGURE 3

The bushings pressed in the rail bracket should rotate freely on the pivot bolt.

INSTALLING RAILS The Safe-T-Gate rails are preassembled as Pivot Right. The upper rail is longer and includes the gas strut mounting bracket. Remove ¾” nylock nuts from ¾” x 5-½” bolts installed in the rail. Install ¾” x 5-½” lower rail bolt with hex in the lower ¾” hole toward the gate opening. Install the ¾” nylock nut behind the pivot plate. Tighten the nylock nut flush with the end of the 5-½” bolt. As shown in Figure 5. FIGURE 4

Tighten the hex nut and nylock nut to compress the pivot plate. As shown in Figure 6. NOTE: The hex nut and bolt head should not compress the rail bushings. The bushings should rotate freely on the bolt.

ASSEMBLING THE CONNECTING LINK The rail connecting links are installed with the slots upwards and the textured side of the plastic outward. Each 3/8” x 4-½” bolt requires four washers and a nylock nut. The center two bolts also utilize steel spacers which act as a stop when the gate is open. Install the two links in the predrilled holes in upper rail. Use large washers under the bolt head and nut and between each link and the rail.

I M P O R TA N T ! ! ! DO NOT over tighten the link to rail hardware. DO NOT compress the rail.

FIGURE 7

Install two bolts with steel spacers in the link slot. Use large washers under the bolt head and nut and between each link and spacer. Attach the links in the predrilled holes in the bottom rail. Open the gate to the full open position and secure with a strap. Adjust link bolts so the top and bottom spacers engage the top and bottom rails when the gate is fully open. The bottom rail should be flush with the edge of the 12” plate.

FIGURE 8

NOTE: The slots in the link allow the gate to be stopped in a partial open position.

Secure the lower bent catch bracket to the post using (3) self drilling screws. Secure the flat catch bracket and the upper bent catch using (3) self drilling screws. Position rail post assembly and rail catch post in desired location. The specified Clear Opening Width is between the 12” plate and the 5” catch post. The Clear Opening Width is set when the lower rail lands halfway on the lower catch bracket. The post assemblies should be C.O.W. + 8.5” on center.

ASSEMBLING GAS STRUT

FIGURE 11

FIGURE 12

The effort required to open and close the Safe-T-Gate may be adjusted by changing the mounting position of the gas strut. There are four mounting positions to choose from. Reference the chart for the best starting position and adjust to your preference. Opening Width 4'0" - 5'6" 5'7" to 7'6" 6'8" to 10'6" 10'7" to 12'0"

Cylinder Size 50 lb 125 lb 125 lb 200 lb

Mounting Location Center Center / Top Center / Bottom Center

When the cylinder is mounted in the lowest position (Figure 11), the angle of the cylinder makes the gate easiest to open. When the cylinder is mounted in the upper position (Figure 12), the decreased gas strut angle makes the rail heavier when the gate is closed.

ASSEMBING THE GAS STRUT CONTINUED Move the rails to the vertical position & secure with a strap. Install an eyelet on each end of the gas strut. Install the 1-3/4” bolt with a washer through the front of the upper rail bracket. Install the 7/16” nylon spacer behind the upper rail bracket. Slide the gas strut cylinder end eyelet on the 1-3/4” bolt. Install a nylon washer and steel washer on the bolt before securing with a nylock nut. Do not overtighten nut.

I M P O R TA N T ! ! ! The gas strut cylinder end is bolted to the upper rail bracket. The gas strut rod end is bolted to the hex bracket on the 12” pivot plate.

Bolt the gas strut rod end eyelet to the tapped hex mounting plate using the grade 8 1-1/4” bolt with nylon patch. Install a steel washer under the bolt head. Install a nylon washer on each side of the eyelet. Do not overtighten bolt.

FIGURE 13

Attach the hex plate to the 12” plate using the lower mounting hole only. The tapped hex should be toward the center of the gate when the gas strut is preloaded upward. A steel washer is required under the bolt head and under the nut. Partially tighten the lower mounting hardware and allow the hex bracket to spin on 12” plate.
