Wood Products – An Environmental Solution The Four Rs Wood IS Good! Economic Measures & Wood-Using Mills Michigan Wood-Using Mills Michigan Wood Products Wood Production in the Lake States Wood Products in the USA Wood is an incredibly useful and environmentally friendly raw material. Wood uses less energy to extract and make into usable products, and results in the lowest level of emissions. It is versatile and inexpensive to produce, and is the only renewable major natural resource. This renewable property is, perhaps, the greatest aspect of using wood. Once you remove a ton of iron ore or a barrel of oil, it doesn't grow back. Wood does, especially if the forests are managed effectively. In the near future, we are likely to see wood used in a variety of innovative ways; transportation fuels, chemicals, electricity, and new ways of heating. Products made from wood, or containing wood and wood derivatives, number in the thousands. Michigan has an amazing collection of wood-using industries, contributing about nine billion dollars each year to our state economy. While industry and jobs are critical to our well-being, forests also have the advantages of producing clean air and water, protecting soil, supporting a burgeoning forest recreation sector, and providing a vast array of wildlife habitats. Timber harvesting is where it all begins. The raw wood products have to be brought out of the forest and delivered to one of Michigan's many primary wood-using mills. From there, secondary products might be sold in the wholesale market or they might be used in an additional value-added manufacturing process. In addition to supplying wood, timber harvesting can also meet objectives for wildlife management, regenerating forests, and maintaining all of the non-timber forest products.

The Four “Rs” – Reduce-Reuse-Recycle . . . and RENEWABLE! Many of Michigan's fourth and fifth graders learn the "reduce-reuse-recycle" message. However, wood use has a fourth "R" . . . called "renew". The renewability aspect may very well be the best feature of wood use. Even an unmanaged forest will regenerate after timber harvest. Northern temperate forests have an amazing resiliency and ability to recover. Just look at our bountiful

1

forests today! They are well on their way to recovery from the massive logging era around the turn of the last century. Of course, forest management and generations of foresters have done much to nurture forest development. The series of photos to the right were taken from nearly the same place for almost a century. You might recognize them from the CD-ROM. By 1911, a typical forest scene was of cut-over land, usually burned-over as well. By 1928, many of our federal, state, county, and industrial forests were forming. Huge planting and fire protection efforts were initiated (Forest History chapter). As forests recovered, management began across much of the new landscape. Markets and industries developed to utilize the new forests. On managed forest, the recovery progressed much sooner. By 2000, most of us have forgotten how foresters and nature have worked together to bring about the condition that we enjoy and benefit from today. But forest management is more important today than ever before. Part of renewability involves the ability of the forests in a particular region to respond to management and our ability and skill in managing these forests. Here in Michigan, and throughout the Lake States, we are fortunate to have exceptionally resilient forests and a long history of forest management. Because of these factors, one could argue that our forests should be actively managed to produce more of the many outputs they are capable of, especially timber. The renewability strength might allow more sensitive forest areas in our region and in other regions of the world to be managed less intensively, or maybe not at all. Dr. Bruce Sohngren, of Ohio State University, produced a model that suggests that for every 20 acres of productive forest "reserved" in the USA, one acre of forest is harvested somewhere else. Much of the "somewhere else" is likely to be in lesser developed countries with fewer (if any) environmental protection laws. It is the tropical rainforests that are most threatened these days. So, thinking globally and acting locally can involve increased management of our Michigan forests. Besides the aspect of renewability, many wood products can also be reused and recycled. Of course, we can also reduce consumption of wood products, but not by replacing wood products with items made from plastic, metals, or other kinds of raw materials. Nothing beats wood in terms of being light on the environment (read the essays by Jim Bowyer and Patrick Moore). Actually, we should probably be using more wood by replacing

2

those items made out of other materials, at least where it makes sense to do so. Using paper cups and plates, for example, would be better than using plastic or Styrofoam cups and plates. Arguably, Lake States forests have much untapped potential to produce greater quantities of timber and fiber with little or no negative environmental side effects. Michigan forests are producing nearly twice the volume of wood that we have been harvesting, and the number of forest acres in Michigan is on the rise (see Michigan Forest Descriptors chapter). Many recycling efforts are ongoing in Michigan communities. However, we need to keep in mind that many products, especially paper products, cannot be made exclusively from recycled fibers, and fibers can only be recycled a few times before they are worn out. But mixing recycled and new fibers, when possible, is a good way to conserve forest resources. Over 45 million tons of paper are recycled each year. Recycling also helps reduce the flow of solid waste, where paper still occupies much of our landfill space. For more information about paper recycling, paper making, and the paper industry, "TAPPI" has a good website for teachers called "Paper U" [www.tappi.org/paperu/welcome.htm] Recycling of solid wood is another matter, and more difficult. Only about five percent of the solid wood waste generated by U.S. communities is recycled or recovered. Most solid wood waste comes from sources like demolitions, pallets, and storm clean-up. Within the primary wood-using industries, however, over 90 percent of the waste is utilized. For more about solid wood recycling, and other topics, try the AF&PA website [www.afandpa.org]. There is also a section for "Kids & Educators" that has some good classroom ideas. The “WoodLINKS” program is a highly regarded curriculum about wood products [www.woodlinks.com/USA/home.html]. The Temperate Forest Foundation also has a variety of classroom-ready products [www.forestinfo.org].

Wood IS Good! Try to imagine all the things people use that are made from wood or have byproducts from wood in them. Paper, cardboard, furniture, and lumber are obvious products. The Temperate Forest Foundation, based in Oregon (a good website designed with teachers in mind), claims over 5,000 items are wood-based, at least in part. Wood byproducts include such things as resins, cellulose (the main component of wood), chemicals, and other extractives. But, wood products are also added to just about anything, including concrete, plastic, food, clothing, and metals. Wood is also being more commonly used for heating, electricity, and transportation fuels.

3

Each year on the average, every person uses more wood. And, each year there are more and more people. The wood comes from the forest, just one of many multiple uses of the forest. Every day, the average person in the USA will consume about 4.5 pounds of wood, that's a little over a third of a two-by-four. Over the course of a year, that adds up to a 16-18" tree, a hundred feet tall. Those trees come from the forest, of course. Managing forests will provide more wood (and other outputs) in a shorter period of time. Where does our wood come from? Most of our wood comes from our own country. However, both Michigan and USA are net wood importers. That means we use more wood than we grow. Canada is our largest wood importer, especially softwoods (needle-bearing trees). But sometimes wood comes from countries where environmental protection and forest management are inadequate. Some would argue that we should be self-sufficient in wood. That is probably a good idea in that we probably could produce the volume of wood used without negative environmental consequences. However, some kinds of wood just don't grow in the USA. And, good forest management is a positive economic development in other countries, as well as our own. How much wood do we harvest in Michigan? A lot. About 360 million cubic feet in 1992, and the amount has been increasing. But how much is that? Let's imagine a pile of eight-foot logs stacked four feet tall. How far would that pile stretch? 3,457 miles! And how far is that? How about a round trip to from Detroit to El Paso, Texas! Hmmm. IS that a lot of wood? In a way, sure. But what can we compare that volume to? Let's take a look at how much GROWS in Michigan each year. Check-out the USA map on the right.

4

Using the same wood pile scenario, the "annual growth" pile would extend 7,900 miles from Detroit to Seattle, then through Los Angeles, Houston, Atlanta, Boston, and then back to Detroit! That's 825 million cubic feet, over twice the amount that is harvested each year! In Michigan, our timber inventory is climbing, and has been for many decades. At some point, however, the gap between harvest and growth may narrow. Biological maximums will be reached, evened the enhanced maximums through management. Our forests are relatively young and growing vigorously. Forest management can help keep them that way, resulting in both increased harvest AND higher growth rates.

The last question along these lines might be; "How much wood is standing in Michigan" Certainly, it's a huge volume of wood. Michigan has the fifth largest forest (timberland) in the country, by area. It's ranked #13 by volume. If you use that same wood pile idea, the pile would stretch 288,723 miles! That's around the Earth twice then off to the moon! Or, around the Earth 11.5 times! Who owns the land where our wood comes from? The table to the right shows "who" is producing the most wood among the three states of Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. For the most part, both Wisconsin and Minnesota are more productive than Michigan! However, differences in forest composition help explain part of the variance. Minnesota is much heavier to mature aspen, which has been extensively clearcut for harvest and regeneration. Michigan has a greater area of northern hardwood types, which

is typically thinned and selectively logged. By contrast and of special note is the top ranking of the Wisconsin Indian lands. This is mostly due to forest management on the Menominee Indian Reservation where, oddly enough, most of the volume comes from selectively logged northern hardwoods! The Menominees have some of the finest managed northern hardwood stands in the USA. Other differences between the three states are forest tax laws and commitment to private forest assistance by the state governments.

Economic Measures and Wood-Using Mills Forest economics is all about the role of wood and forest use in our communities and society. It is NOT simply about money. Dollar stocks and flows are measures of economic activity, not the definition. Forests are an integral piece in the life-blood of many of our communities and are essential to everyone. Try to imagine life without wood products! Or, think about Michigan lifestyles without forests! Keep in mind that each of us uses about 4.5 pounds of wood EACH day. That's equivalent to about half a 2 by 4. Wood is a prime environmental solution to many of our raw material requirements. The following essays provide excellent background about the economic, environmental, and ethical use of wood. Jim Bowyer, “Alternatives to Forest Harvest and Wood Use,” University of Minnesota, Department of Wood and Paper Science Patrick Moore, “Green Spirit-Trees Are the Answer,” Co-founder of Greenpeace Not surprisingly, forest industries and Comparison of Michigan Forest Product Values with wood-using industries comprise one Values of Major Agricultural Commodity Groups, 1994 of the largest economic sectors in Michigan. The annual monetary value exceeds nine billion dollars, and those figures are from 1994! In comparison, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP = the value of all goods and service generated within the state) is about $325 dollars. Just the annual value of raw wood products delivered to Michigan mills exceeds 530 million dollars in 1994 (PotterSource: Ag Source: www.mda.state.mi.us/mass/stats99/econ.htm#2 Witter and Stevens, 1996). products (something made from raw wood) was worth about 6.6 billion dollars in 1992 (Potter-Witter and Stevens, 1996). Over 125,000 people work in these industries. Recent analyses by the Michigan Forest Products Council show the size of the forest products sector even larger. You will find differing values depending upon the analysis, but all of them are large numbers which illustrate one of the important aspects of our forests . . . a major driver in our state economy! All these "facts" represent more than just numbers. They represent livelihoods, communities, schools, families, and much more. One of the best aspects of the forest industry is that it is dependent on raw materials that are not only recyclable and reusable, but they are also renewable! However, this section will deal mostly with some of the "cold, hard facts" about Michigan's forest industry. Michigan Wood-Using Mills Once out of the forest, logs, pulpwood, and chips are delivered to a wide range of mills that process the wood into either a useable product or material that will be used in the manufacture of other products. Wood-using mills are a valuable part of Michigan's forest industry and come in a wide variety of types. They occur in each of Michigan's 83 counties. A "primary" woodusing mill utilizes raw products from the forest (logs, chips, pulpsticks, etc.). Examples would be a sawmill or pulp mill. A "secondary" wood-using mill uses valueadded products from primary wood-using mill. Examples would be paper mills or furniture plants. There can be several secondary mill links in a wood product "food chain". Michigan has about 345 primary and over 1,300 secondary wood-using mills. Additionally, there are over 850 producers that manufacture logs, pulpwood, and other raw wood products. Some mills are very large, such as the pulp and paper mills owned by the NewPage Corporation or Verso Paper. They employ

thousands of workers and consume large volumes of wood each year. However, most mills are small, employing only a few workers. Most mills are located in southern Michigan. Most of the state wood producers (loggers, truckers, wood brokers, etc.) are located in the north close to where most of the forest resource grows. Wood materials must be transported to these mills. Over half of Michigan's forest industry is involved with producing the raw wood products. The furniture industry is a large part of the picture. Number of Companies by Michigan Region

In many rural counties, forest industry is a critical element in the local economies. Over 500 million dollars flows into smaller northern towns just from the sale of logs and other raw wood products. Statewide, 8

value-added industries contribute another 6-7 billion dollars on an annual basis. Michigan Wood Products Wood and wood derivatives are found in thousands of products that Americans use each day. Many of these products may not even bring wood to mind. Cellulose is a complex sugar molecule that is the essential part of wood that make wood woody. Cellulose is often blended with plastics, cement, and other materials to add qualities to various products. Football helmets, rayon clothing, toothpaste, food additives and thickeners, and sandwich bags are all good examples of composite materials that contain wood components.

Most people probably think of solid wood products when they think of wood construction products. There are materials such as lumber, particle board, and oriented strand board (waferboard). It also includes items like furniture, fence posts, toothpicks, tool handles, and hundreds of other products easily identifiable as being made out of wood. Michigan has hundreds of companies that make wooden products. Paper products also commonly come to mind, and there are hundreds different kinds of paper, tissues, cardboard, and related products. The "Levi's" label on their jeans is made from a specialty paper manufactured at the Neenah Papers mill in Munising. There isn't day when we don't use something made out of paper, from cereal boxes in the morning to newspapers in the evening. Imagine life without toilet paper! Wood chemicals can be found in many common products. Cleaning compounds, perfumes, medicines, insecticides, deodorants, and artificial flavorings are some of the things based on wood products, at least in part. Many of these chemicals are derived from lignosulfates, which is the "glue" that helps hold wood together. Lastly, many foods contain tree products. It's not simply "sawdust" added as fillers! Fruits and nuts are the obvious, perhaps. Cinnamon is tree bark, dried and ground. Coffee, chocolate, and real vanilla all come from trees. Torula yeast is found in many food items, including baby food, imitation bacon, breakfast cereals, and some beverages. Sweeteners can be made from wood that are added to chewing gum, toothpaste, and drugs. Scientists are working on a new sweetener called xylitol that helps fight tooth decay. It's a by-product of paper-making.

Use of wood in Michigan-made products is extensive and diverse. For a list of hundreds of products, see the table at the end of this chapter. However, some of the more interesting, and maybe unusual, products are listed right here. Product Name

Wood Production in the Lake States Compared to Wisconsin and Minnesota, Michigan forests harvest less wood per acre. This is part of the reason why Michigan's timber "surplus" is one of the highest in the nation. The thought might be that we manage and harvest our forests less intensively than our sister states. However, there are other possible explanations for this ranking.

Thinning and selection harvesting produce less wood volume per acre within the time frame of a decade or so. This is especially true of our largely middle-aged northern hardwoods being managed to create unevenaged stands from even-aged stands left over from past logging practices. Even-aged forest types, such as aspen, red pine, jack pine, oak-hickory, and paper birch, become more frequent as you move west. Even-aged types tend to mature and decline in widespread "boom and bust" cycles. So, when the "boom" comes, harvest is accelerated to minimize the "bust". This boom-and-bust cycle has also been accentuated by our logging history and subsequent treatment of the land. Much of our Lake States aspen, paper birch, and jack pine resources have reached maturity.

Even-aged: A stand condition where most of the trees are within 20 percent of the rotation (the time from regeneration to maturity). Uneven-aged: A stand condition where three or more distinct ages classes are individually mixed or occur in small pockets throughout the stand. In Michigan, northern hardwood types are commonly managed with an uneven-aged objective. When all ages classes become present, the term "all-aged" is sometimes used.

Wood Products in the USA

Things That Contain Wood or Wood Products

Adapted from the Temperate Forest Foundation Website (about 425 items) It's amazing how many things contain wood or derivatives from wood. Most of the items are things we don't think about very much. And, many of them are items we would not want to do without. Wood is an amazing natural resource. When broken down into various chemicals, dyes, compounds, and extracts, the properties of those components can be combined with a wide range of other materials for composite materials most of us could not imagine. Several sources suggest that the number of products made from wood or that contain wood number in the thousands. The Temperate Forest Foundation claims over 5000. The following list has been derived from the Temperate Forest Foundation website. See the end of this chapter for a long list of products that contain wood.
