~ Rhythms of Peace ~ THE VISION The Centre for Social Justice will be hosting an event on July 26th 2008 in Toronto to mark the United Nation’s declaration that this decade is dedicated to promoting a culture of peace. This summer we envision bringing communities together from across the Greater Toronto Area for an event that celebrates how music, dance, poetry and the visual arts are transformative tools in manifesting healing and peace. We have invited persons from refugee and immigrant communities to share the ways in which they use artistic expression to transform, to enliven, to heal and for promoting a culture of togetherness.

SPONSORSHIP The Rhythms of Peace event relies on the generous support of our sponsors to make the event financially accessible to all persons who would like to attend and to uphold the Centre for Social Justice’s goal of promoting inclusion. Sponsorship is an excellent means of promoting your organization to performers, audience members and also the greater community and beyond. The event is organized by the Centre for Social Justice, a registered non-profit organization that has held events and brought community members together since 1997. The event will be advertised in the Greater Toronto area, and has attracted performers in Ottawa and Quebec. Event publicity will be circulated widely within those cities as well.

THE EVENT Rhythms of Peace will be held on Saturday July 26th, 2008 at the Cecil Community Centre. Professional and amateur performers from the Greater Toronto Area will present the ways in which their art form manifests personal empowerment and brings about healing and peace. In addition to these performances, we have invited a number of artists who will be simultaneously painting their rendition of peace in what will be called “Pieces of Peace”. The artwork will be auctioned at the end of the night and proceeds will go towards a cause for furthering research and education on the importance of the arts in manifesting peace. Raffle tickets will also be sold, the proceeds of which will also go towards the cause. Doors will open from 7:30pm and performances will begin at 8:00pm and end at midnight in a family-friendly and wheelchair accessible venue, The Cecil Community Centre at 58 Cecil Street in downtown Toronto. The space can accommodate 270 people and we anticipate a great turnout. The space is versatile and allows for participants to be seated, to dance, to interact and to network. We aspire to have a free event and to make it as accessible as possible.

The Centre for Social Justice The Centre for Social Justice conducts research and education in a bid to narrow the gap in income, wealth and power, and enhance peace and human security. The Centre brings together people from universities and unions, faith groups and community organizations in the pursuit of greater equality and democracy. It supports social movements in the struggle for social justice and offers a non-partisan perspective on political, social and economic issues. Our History The Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) was created in 1997 to carry on much of the work of the Jesuit Centre for Social Faith and Justice. During its 19 years of operation, the Jesuit Centre had earned widespread respect for its work on Central American issues, for its support of refugees, and for its efforts to strengthen social movements here in Canada. In an effort to continue this work, a partnership of activists from unions, universities, faith communities and social movements approached the Jesuits, who agreed to help them in setting up a new independent centre. In order to guarantee full compliance with Canadian charity laws, the Board of Directors incorporated two entities: the Centre for Social Justice would conduct public advocacy and the CSJ Foundation for Research and Education would pursue charitable activities in the form of research and education.
