‘SMALL WINS’ OUR PHILOSOPHY !

Jardine Karate is based upon the philosophy of ‘small wins’. Our goal is to create an environment where our students can strive for and reach ever-increasing targets.

!

With every ‘small win’, little success or tiny forward movement, an understanding dawns that, with dedication, commitment, directed effort and patience, success is not only possible, but inevitable!

!

Eventually, with many ‘small wins’ won, an unshakeable faith in this process unfolds. The highest goal for our members is that this deepseated belief in themselves leads to the realisation that they are the creators of their every success in and out of the Dojo.

!

We offer our philosophy and concept to you so that not only will your Martial Arts become outstanding, but so too, will your lives.

ABOUT MATT JARDINE !

Matt Jardine has been teaching the Martial Arts for over twenty years and as a parent himself, fully understands the needs of his junior students and indeed their parents - as well the Seniors. He is asked to write regularly for various publications about teaching, concepts and thoughts regarding the Martial Arts.

!

He is a Senior black belt in ‘Full contact karate’ as well holding other ranks in other styles.

!

He started out his life as a professional Tennis player making the transition into coaching and biomechanics when he found his passion and talent lay with teaching.

!

Martial Arts have been the core of his life and his role as Sensei (Japanese for Teacher) was, some would say, inevitable.

!

An eternal student, he has immersed himself in the study of Traditional Eastern medicine (he is a qualified Shiatsu therapist), Eastern mindfulness practices (he walked the famous ‘88’ Temple pilgrimage on the Japanese island of Shikoku), and many Martial Arts.

!

An avid and fierce competitor he continues to compete in various fighting styles on a monthly basis insisting that he must ‘walk the walk’ if he is to feel comfortable standing in front of his students asking them to offer their best.

A BRIEF HISTORY OF JARDINE KARATE !

It is common for Students (as did Sensei Matt) to want to trace the historical origins of the Art that they are studying. We encourage this wholeheartedly.

!

All Arts, by definition, are a work in progress: ever evolving, changing, improving, adjusting and in transition to some ‘greater goal’. It is one of the most attractive things about following the Martial Arts path. It never ends.

!

Jardine Karate is Sensei Matts expression of myriad influences that come together, for him and for you, in the form that they are, right here, right now. As he continues to grow, so will the Art. As you continue to grow, so will the Art.

!

For those seeking clear comparison however, we offer the following diagram:

At the time when he finally felt that his expression of the Martial Arts would be a valuable contribution to the Martial Arts community, Sensei Matt toiled long and hard with the name he would use.

!

He settled upon his surname: clear, honest, and unambiguous.

!

The images of our school are both traditional calligraphy- a deep bow to the Japanese traditions that we hold so dear- and a modern logo welcoming and accepting our Western heritage and the modern age in which we are living.

OUR COMMITMENT TO YOU !

We believe that the relationship between teacher and student should be built upon mutuality; each partner doing their utmost to build the very best dynamic in which both can thrive.

!

With this in mind we offer our commitments to you:

!

!

! !

! ! !

• To put your physical, mental and emotional health and safety above all else - The Martial Arts are contact activities and whilst knocks, bumps and bruises are inevitable and part of growth, serious injury and damage are not. We are deeply committed to providing a safe and healthy learning environment both mentally and physically and whilst accidents can and do happen, we strive for this to be the exception rather than the norm.

• To always provide fully trained and qualified instruction appropriate to the standard of the class being instructed - all of our teachers (sempais) are hand picked and fully trained. All have been working and training with Sensei Matt for many years and their progress as teachers has been carefully assessed throughout this time. Jardine Karate has made a conscious decision to keep its school relatively small using only fully trusted, carefully chosen staff to care for its students. We will never use a teacher who has not been through our lengthy process of teacher training and development. • To provide teachers who meet all government, association and educational requirements - We ensure that all of our teachers are fully CRB checked and insured. We keep to strict association guidelines and in our curriculum programmes we also adhere to OFSTED regulations. • To provide alternative instruction in the case of teacher illness - the benefit of a small, high quality and regulated teaching staff is that we can offer you the very best instruction and care; unfortunately, there are times, with such a small team, that the teacher roster may have to change in the case of teacher illness or personal emergency. As much as we care about our students, we extend this same compassion to our Team and will always look after their well being equally. That being said, all efforts will be made to either:

Use a replacement teacher where available

Reschedule the class

Offer an alternative class

The worst case scenario, as we would always prefer to offer the lesson, refund for the missed class

• To ensure that all staff are constantly striving to improve their skills, teaching or otherwise, so that they can pass these on to you - Sensei Matt firmly believes that a teacher should be as much of a student as the students he and his Team are teaching. He insists that everyone, teacher and student, commit, in whatever way, to eternally improving their skill sets and passing this knowledge on.

STUDENT/PARENT REQUIREMENTS !

As we have previously expressed, we are committed to you and, as with any relationship that hopes to flourish, we expect reciprocity.

! These are our student/parent requirements:

!

• Be courteous, respectful and kind to your teachers, fellow peers, guests, and, just as importantly, YOURSELF

!

!

!

!

!

• Show full respect to your Dojo (the place in which you are learning Martial Arts), in regard to tidiness, cleanliness and care of your practicing environment • Be punctual - always make the very best effort to arrive in plenty of time for your class. Aim to arrive a minimum of 5 minutes before class commences. If, for whatever reason, you are late, enter quietly, without disturbing others, and sit at the back in Seiza (kneeling position) until your teacher invites you to join. Please remember to apologise for your lateness. • Remove all jewellery - as we have said, we are committed to safety within our classes. Please remove all watches, piercings and any type of jewelry: this includes Religious items. If, for whatever reason, an item cannot be removed, it must be fully taped; it is the responsibility of the student/parent to do so. If it does not meet our safety standards, the student will be unable to participate. • Wear the Jardine Karate school Gi- a school is a place of identity: a place where people join together to learn and share common goals. The wearing of a school uniform, Martial Arts or otherwise, helps to provide this important group dynamic. A uniform also ensures that external influences, such as fashion, money and pop culture, are eliminated from the Dojo by a student base that shares the very same clothing. The final reason for our insistence on the use of the school uniform is that it ensures quality control. The Gis (uniforms) have been designed to meet the needs, demands and safety of our students. Gis can be purchased online at web shop at www.jardinekarate.com. (Please see offer at the back of this manual) If you are unable to afford the Gi, please see your teacher.

Copyright © 2014 Jardine Karate

!8

www.jardinekarate.com

Please note: It should be an honour to wear a Gi with your Schools Calligraphy. With this in mind, we insist that new students earn this privilege: This is done by completing AT LEAST one half term (sometimes more) of lessons demonstrating a kind, trustworthy, respectful and dedicated attitude. At the end of this period your teacher will invite you to wear the school calligraphy Gi.

II. For new students who are coming from another school: In line with our requirement of respect for teachers and peers, we ask new students from other schools, regardless of experience, to remove any badges or calligraphy from their previous Dojo and to participate in a neutral white belt until their teacher has assessed where they will fit within our school: this process may take several weeks.

I.

!

! !

!

• Only use association approved fight kit- with our insistence on optimum safety during sparring, we insist that only association approved fight wear be used. The variables for fight wear are so broad that we cannot ensure the safety quality of other brands. Our fight kits have been designed to meet the needs, demands and safety of our students. Fight kit can be purchased online at our web shop at www.jardinekarate.com (Please see offer at the back of this manual). If you are unable to afford the kit, please see your teacher. • Please pay your fees on time- Our school is built on mutual trust and respect. Please ensure your fees are paid on time.

• All students (red belts and above) must have an up to date licence to participate- in line with strict Association regulations, all students from red belt (and those grading for red belt) must own a current and up to date Martial Arts Licence. This licence is mandatory student insurance and participation will not be allowed until this requirement is met.

Jardine Karate runs an annual Licence system that runs from the 1st January to the 31st December of the same year. We are unable to offer a pro rata Licence.

! ! !

We ask you to pay promptly at the beginning of the year so that student learning is not interrupted. Once again, if you are unable to afford this, please see your teacher.

• Be clean- Please keep yourself, your Gi and your equipment clean at all times. Tie up hair, cut toe and fingernails, and do not train if you are unwell or likely to spread illness or infection. Respect yourself, your teachers and your peers.

!

• Only students are permitted in the Dojo during class time (unless otherwise invited for special events, demonstrations, displays etc.)The Dojo is a Haven and a sanctum for the student of the Martial Arts. It is an opportunity to, albeit temporarily, leave the ‘outside world at the Dojo door’; an opportunity to fully immerse themselves in the moment of study without the other pressures that sit upon them from elsewhere. Many years of experience bought Sensei Matt to the conclusion that the three relational dynamics (student to teacher, teacher to parent and student to parent) are so unique and different that they should not be confused within the Dojo.

!

Another reason for this policy is that those who do not train in the Martial Arts cannot fully understand the Martial Arts no matter how avid a supporter. Help and guidance from ‘outside’ is, more often than not, unhelpful and potentially damaging.

!

On a final health and safety note, we are not insured to look after visitors except on special and scheduled occasions. Teachers have a duty of care to ALL within the Dojo, and an uninsured visitor is a stress that detracts from the main goal of teaching.

PROGRAMME AND PROGRESS SYSTEM ! In harmony with our philosophy of ‘small wins’, we operate a progress system designed to allow the student to set, work for and eventually attain the goals they strive toward.

!

Goal setting is a vital aspect to self-growth and need to be measurable so that students may honestly assess where they stand in relation to the goal they have set their sights on.

!

Our systematic progress system is designed to bring the very best out of our students; they, of course, must do the hard work, but the path has been set and we have all the experience necessary to support them along it.

!

Together, student and teacher work toward the same end, the evolution of a student confident enough to ‘think big’.

! !

OUR BELT COLOURS

!

In our school we have chosen to use the following colours in a progressive belt system. There are ten Kyu grades (pre-advanced grades) before reaching the Dan grades (advanced grades) at Black belt and beyond.

!

Comprehensive information regarding the progression, techniques needed at each level and minimum-training requirements necessary to achieve each level is available in our Jardine Karate Syllabus (please see offer at the back of this manual)

RESPONSIBILITIES OF BELT HOLDERS ! We have used the previous chart to demonstrate the colours of our belts and it appears as a linear system. In actuality, the belt system has a much more important purpose than simply measuring personal progress.

! In accord with our goal to develop the students socially, mentally, emotionally as well as physically, a big emphasis is placed on the chart above.

!

The white belt sits at the centre of the circle, the black on the outside, and all other colours circling outward, from white, in order. This symbolises the responsibility the ever-evolving student has, for not only their own self-growth and attainment, but also that of the students below them.

!

With each movement up the ranks, they will be taught to care for those lower than them. The benefits of this are manifold and we have used this concept for many years to teach humility, respect, discipline, compassion and kindness. It is one of my greatest joys to watch our students successfully demonstrate these qualities.

THE PROGRAMME We offer a full and comprehensive programme designed to help you to whatever heights you wish to attain within the Martial Arts and beyond.

! ! ! ! ! ! !

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

!

The JK syllabus will show you which belt corresponds to which levels on the pyramid, but this manual will briefly explain the sessions available.

!

CLASSES This is where it all begins, the lifeblood of the programme. All classes can be booked online at the Jardine Karate website www.Jardinekarate.com

!

CAMPS We host an excellent camp programme in the holidays for those students who want to really learn, train and practice more. Depending on the length of the camp, students can receive anywhere from 8 to 20 hours extra formal tuition Copyright © 2014 Jardine Karate

!14

www.jardinekarate.com

on top of their regular classes during term time. Needless to say, students who attend our camps thrive.

! !

GRADINGS By invitation only, once we feel the student is ready, students may attempt for their next belt. Gradings are set as either stand-alone sessions or at the end of the longer Karate camps.

! ! !

WORKSHOPS AND MASTER CLASSES The Martial Arts are as broad as they are diverse in their range of study. Workshops and Master classes take a micro look at chosen subjects allowing the student an opportunity to delve into the finer details necessary for Mastery.

! !

T&B The now infamous T&B has been a massive success in improving our students understanding, competence and enjoyment of competitive based sparring matches.

Held within a safe and controlled environment, they help progressing students become accustomed to and, eventually, embrace the rigours of live tournament Karate.

!

Points are awarded for wins, losses or draws and a season long league table plots the success of the fighters.

!

For those who are wondering, T&B stands for Tapper and Blockers. It was a phrase that Sensei Matt used in classes to explain that live karate match play and sparring is not a real fight, it is a controlled expression of skills learnt so far: “Tappers and blockers rather than Bashers and Crashers”.

! ! ! !

JK TEAMS Another very popular event is JK Teams. At the competitive level, Karate is an individual sport. We introduced JK Teams to bring the group camaraderie found in classes to the competitive arena.

Teams compete against each other (usually school vs school) in a league where every team will, over the weeks, face each other.

!

Teams are allowed and encouraged to support and coach themselves, which has proven to be the most enjoyed part of this session.

! ! !

JK CHAMPIONSHIPS Once a year, toward the end, we hold our flag ship tournament event.

The Jardine Karate Championships.

!

This is a ticketed event where parents and friends can come and watch and support the competitors as they battle it out.

!

With demonstrations, medals, trophies, awards and ‘goodies’ this is an event not to be missed.

THE EVOLUTION PROGRAMME For black belts and serious contenders for this level, we offer the ‘Evolution progamme’.

!

This programme was designed to help highlevel students evolve their skills to higher and higher standards. Enhancing the skills they currently have, teaching them new ones they have yet to see and introducing them to different Martial Arts helps this elite group make Martial Arts a ‘way of life’ rather than just a hobby.

!

The Programme includes: BBT Black belt training: the opportunity to train alongside Sensei Matt and his team as an equal. Knowledge is shared as one Martial Artist to another as opposed to Teacher to Student. In BBT, everyone is a student.

!

COMBAT LEAGUE Our highest-level competitive league: For very experienced students this style of competition allows striking, clinching, takedowns and grappling.

! ! ! !

TEACHER TRAINING Beyond all the learning (which never truly ends), training and practicing, we come full circle. For some, like Sensei Matt, they realise that they would like to share their wealth of experience and teach.

!

Teaching is itself an art. Mastering subject material as a practitioner is not necessarily qualification to teach.

!

With this in mind, we have set up the Teacher Training programme. Designed to help those with the desire to make teaching the Martial Arts a vocation, we will train them to be a professional, caring, considerate and accomplished teacher.
